Status: offline 		So this is the Tubby Smith type hire that was promised? Kill made $380K last years so I would think adding a couple hundred thousand is all it would take. Maturi going on the cheap again.

Kill might have come from a winning program but I wonder about his recruiting base. He can't recruit the same players to compete in the Big 10. Will Minn players even stay home for him?

He'll have to win some more games first before the in-state guys start staying.

Probably should have gone w/Wisconsin's o-coordinator.


at least then saying Chryst when things go bad wouldn't sound so awful.

BLAH hiring. Waste of a month or two. Did you even TRY, Maturi? Blah, from this Gopher fan.
I was steering away from "big names" so that I agree with, but this isn't a hot newcomer on the scene, he's a guy with an "ok" resume'.
Definitely does not get his teams OVER the hump. has rebuilt and produced solid teams, not really, really, good ones.
And right now, we need a really, really, good one.
All we can do is wait and see. Bielema likes him. Gushed about him in an interview. That could be a very, very , bad thing.

Status: offline 		I think you need to start with a 'get them to mediocre' coach though. And I agree; Horton might have been that guy.

THEN you get an up and comer to put them over the top and take it to a ceiling of a program.

Should have had the balls to hire Mike Leach.

Or ,as I noted, take the Wisconsin O-COORd.

He might have had a clue how to use Gray.

We'll see. But I agree...BLAH

Status: offline 		I think any coach who comes in here and can actually coach players can win right away and get back to some of bowl game. It doesn't matter if it is Kill or Horton or Leach. The current Gophers are bigger, faster and more athletic than they have been in many years. They have something like 18 starters returning next year. It killed me that Brewster was so inept that he couldn't even get to a lower tier bowl game this year.

I agree. Even if Leach would have just used us as a stepping stone. He would have raised the profile of the job for the next coach search. Word is that guys like Sumlin and Calhoun were not interested because the job is considered too toxic for top flight up and comer. You had the option of a proven winner with baggage like Leach or the next tier down for up and comers like Kill.

They will win.
Horton proved that already.
MUCH more talent and potential here than before.
But with this hire, they probably won't work hard enough or be succesful enough to get anywhere near "over the hump" down the road.
Look for many more "barely over .500" seasons, and more trips to the "no one's watching" bowl games. yay!

The one positive I am finding is that he seems to be getting some pretty big endorsements from the coaching fraternity, including Beilema at Wisconsin who we all know had complete and utter disdain for Brewster. If Kill can get winning season and some level bowl game out of the gate it could fuel recruiting.

Status: offline 		I agree on the Leach stuff guys. I've thought he'd be great at Vandy for a couple of years now; need a gimmick/system to win in the SEC at a school like that IMO.

Supposedly his big problem is interviews though (in addition to the obvious safety stuff). He's a "weird" guy who doesn't come off well in interviews, etc.

Agreed and unfortunately Maturi f***ed it up so badly last time that there is little reason to have any faith that he got it right this time.

As I said, winning early can only help his recruiting. Wisconsin and Iowa are proof you don't need to match Ohio for recruits with the maximum amount of stars after their names. You recruit to fit your system and coach those kids to the best of their abilities. Wisconsin has never had an elite recruiting rank, but they always have good teams. Illinois has had the highest ranked recruiting classes in the Big Ten under Zook (they even grabbed the number 1 class one year), but that hasn't translated into wins.

Typically head coaches lobby for their coordinators to get head coaching jobs and express disbelief when their guy gets passed over. According to the Common Man; his sourced say that Chryst wasn't interested.

Status: offline 		A decent press conference by Maturi and Kill IMO.  Maturi, whether you agree with it or not, at least seemed to have a plan in place.  It ruled out anyone not sqeaky clean and gave a big preference to current college coaches.  Clearly several guys were not interested in the Minn job though.  I would have liked to see Lou Holtz here for a few years.  He could right the ship during the president & AD transistion.  Then it would be easier to hire a good coach after that point.  Don't know if the Holtz rumor ever had legs though.

Kill sounds like a pretty straight shooter who, for the most part, "gets it".  He joked that he wasn't his wifes first choice either.  Then stated he prefers the athletic QB so Gray, Alipate and Parrish should be ok.  The new recruit Shortell however, I'm not so sure about.  He might want to change his commit.  Kill will run a 4-3 defense with lots of pressure.  He loves team speed.....and a passing rushing DE & lock down CB's, two things we clearly don't have.  Kill is also big into recruiting the local talent.  Already knows and has met with several MN high school coaches.  He mentioned the N. ILL fist team all-MAC offensive tackle from Minnesota (Edina).  Also, he's talking to the current staff...and will honor all current player commits.

I'm not sure he understands just how anti-Gopher the media here is when it comes to football.  It's probably tough for an outsider to know that but he will find out fast!!  It's still brutal listening to KFAN try to talk Gopher football.

Status: offline 		Just watched the press conference and found out he lived not far from me in the 60's. I was stationed at McConnell AFB in Wichita Kansas and he lived 20 miles from there.

He already met with team and coaching staff and will talk more with coaches tomorrow to assess if he wants to keep any. He praised them for what they have done with the recruiting so far and as soon as he is done with the press he will start calling all that have committed and see if they can visit this weekend. He also is meeting with some HS coaches tomorrow. He isn't wasting any time and I guess he can't afford to since open recruiting is a week old already.

Maturi said that through his whole process, everywhere he went he kept hearing of the name Jerry Kill. Now I'm getting old, but I remember that same line a few years ago with the name of Brewster

That's because Zook is a terrible coach.

You need to be both a good recruiter and a good coach to win anything significant in college sports.

Status: offline 		That's my point. Brewster and Zook prove that if you suck at coaching, it doesn't matter who you recruit. Wisconsin starting under Alverez never came close to piling up the most stars behind their recruits names. They have however recruited kids who fit their system and did a stellar job coaching them.

Status: offline 		Well, I've seen Jerry Kill now, and I know one thing ... he wasn't hired for his looks.
Seems pretty goal-oriented and likable. Just not a handsome sonofagun. Not that it matters.
The current players seemed impressed, thats a start. Won't be busy modeling, he'll have time to work on football.
Nabbed a decent looking wife, for not being much of a looker himself.
