I wonder if Marty is still pimping his boy for MVP? Based on his own criteria two weeks ago, you could make a better case for Pennington and Delhomme than for Favre, unless if you love him, of course

I see the NFL has finally suspended Matt Jones of the Jaguars. They upheld the three game suspension after denying his appeal.

At least I have some faith again in the illegal drug policy.

Now they need to suspend Johnny Jolly and I'll believe again.

It is clearly a combination of many factors - to be the best.

Production
Ability to change games/make defenses adjust to you
Longevity

It is not just one factor and you certainly consider surrounding talent when evaluating a player.

There are also minimums you should achieve and a WR who doesn't average at least 10 TDs a year isn't the best. You have to get into the end zone. Just like a RB who gets 1500 yards but is under 4 yards per carry probably isn't the best either.

Interesting to see today the NFL announcing layoffs. One thing I've been kicking around in my head the last few months, is will sports be hit by the economy as with just about every other industry.

Where I"m going with this is sports salaries seem to escalate at a rate much greater than the general economy. Not only are we seeing less support by fans (some of which I think is due to the economy), the big thing is as companies begin to cut spending, advertise dollars could really dry up. I wonder if many professional sports are making committments they won't be able to meet down the road, and could result in eventual bankruptcy.

Am I crazy for thinking this?

Hockey should be the barometer of that question. They'll be the first to feel the effects and they are already speculating that the newly imposes salary cap is going down next year. I think it's one of the many factors keeping the Wild from inking Gaborik to a big deal.

This is absolutely true. But I get the feeling that people are "upset" with "the NFL", and Roger Goodell for this.

Outside of the law, punishment from the league for the players is collectively bargained. You must follow the agreement. Which side do you supposed drew a hard line for easy punishments for uses like coke, drunk driving, etc, and which side pushed for these lighter punishments?

The answer is because the commisioner is basically a mouthpiece for the owners, and the owners did not want to go thorugh the bad press of not just the cheater being suspended, but having the very integrity of their game unquestionably and irrevocable thrown into a negative light.

This way, people like you and I can think the integrity of the league is mud, but the general NFL fan at large thinks nothing really that bad or game changing was done.

You'll get no argument from me about suspending that cheating jerk.

Goodell would have been replaced as commish if he had, though.

I don't think you're going to see Alan Faneca or Damion Woody, or ANY OL getting the MVP, even if they MIGHT be deserving. Nor do I think the guys you're 'pimpin', Albert Haynesworth or AP, will get it. AP has a shot (but it hurts to have a good backup), but I think another is more likely.

I was making the case for Favre 2 weeks ago because:

1) The Jets just went on the road to defeat both NE and the undefeated Titans,

2) The Packers are going from a 13-3 team, to one that will finish 8-8 at best, possibly 5-11.

3) The major difference in the Packers' case being Favre

4) For the Jets, Favre is a player that is part of turnaround from 4-12

5) Favre is the LARGEST part of the Jet turnaround because QB is the most important position on the field.

AS of right now, I would say this years' MVP will probably be: QB Peyton Manning.

Let's be clear on one thing...the Packers decent into mediocrity is barely Aaron Rodgers fault. The fault truly lies with the defense. They can't stop the run. Their corners are getting old... It is the defense that is bringing that team down...not Rodgers. He has been relatively good.

We weren't arguing who "would" get it; just that Favre is NOT deserving. He should not be in the top 10. Those guys have been more important to the turnaround of the Jets than Favre has.

And btw, It's AD! Not AP. AD! Sorry, it's a super pet peeve of mine for people that still call him this.

Agreed here as well.

Plus, I just think the Packers got a bit lucky last year and the Jets were unlucky. Happens all the time in sports. Things even out.

Put Favre on the Packers and I don't think their record is any different. Have Clemens start for the Jets and I don't think their record is really any different. Maybe slightly.

Rodgers has played well at times, put up a lot of points. I agree that the Packers defense is giving up A LOT more points than last year, is much more vulnerable to big plays.

However, what can't be overlooked is Rodgers 4th quarter play where he has thrown a clutch INT in almost every one of their losses. Favre did NOT do that last year, not in the regular season. Favre made clutch plays that put them over the top, just like he did for the Jets on the road against NE and Tennessee this year.

For the Packers, Favre saved his 4th quarter clutch INT for the Giants PLAYOFF game.

This is where I disagree STRONGLY.

While I doubt that Favre would have been as superb in the regular season as he was last year, I think with his familiarity with Jennings, Driver and Lee, and the addition of Jordy Nelson, I think Favre would have played very well. I think the Packers would have at least 2 more wins, they would be 7-6, maybe 8-5.

With Favre, the Packers were less predictable, Grant got more screens, the QB was sacked less, and Favre didn't throw the clutch INTs in the 4th quarter during regular season. I think Favre would have gotten the Packers into the playoffs this year, but probably would have been the goat in a playoff game, like he has been much of the last 10 years.

I think that IF Clemons had started for the Jets, he probably would have been worse than Pennington, the Jets could well be 3-10 right now, maybe 4-9. I doubt they would have as many wins as they do now. I think Clemons would likely have had them lose at NE and at Tennessee.
