I see Brett Favre is still trying to keep himself relevant. He gave the media more fodder to bash him if they have the cajones to do it. I just heard on Around the Horn that Favre chimed in on Kitna going back into the game after being held out for a concussion. According to Favre, it was irresponsible to let him back in, or for Kitna to want to go back in, until he's had 24 hours to be evaluated (paraphrasing here because I didn't hear the exact quote). Hypocrisy thy name is Brett Favre. This from a guy who has admitted to playing with injuries that he says he shouldn't have. A guy who came into a game two seasons ago after a concussion, ran past Mike Sherman and called a play in the huddle - admitting later that he didn't even know what down it was! Several years ago, the divine Favre went back into a game after throwing up blood on the sidelines. Many Packer fans on the board I used to visit pointed to that moment with immense pride, saying that it showed what a tough guy he was. I countered by saying it showed what a lousy training staff they had. And why is he chiming in on another team's business? He's done it before, of course. He went public with criticism of the Titans and how they went about the contract with Steve McNair, but when McNabb opined that Favre was wrong to publicly berate Javon Walker about threatening a hold-out - Favre's response was that McNabb shouldn't be talking about another team's business. Why does Favre always consider himself an exception to rules? He's becoming such an old curmudgeon.
OK Lynn, easy on the Favre hatred until you get all the facts. In his Wednesday press conference he was asked (Per Packers.com) Q. You talked about competition and competing quite a bit today. Is there a point in time when the competitive will gets into the way of safety and well-being of a player? In the Jon Kitna situation last week, he was diagnosed with a concussion, yet he came back into the game. BRETT FAVRE: I'm sure that does happen. I'm no doctor. I was not there. I'm aware of what happened in Detroit last week. I mean, I heard about it. Didn't see it. I have to admit I'm a little bit surprised in today's game, with the huge emphasis on concussions, that he was allowed to go back into the game. Now, maybe later on in the game they maybe determined it wasn't a concussion. I don't know. I'm not going to speculate. I'm sure you're aware of Commissioner Goodell's big push. I think there was something even on HBO about that. Even if the player wanted to go back in -- I'm a perfect example. Several years ago we played the Giants here, I received a concussion I think in the second quarter. When the cobwebs started going away a little bit, I was on the sidelines and the offense was on the field. Two plays later, I ran on the field. It was fourth down, which I didn't know. Threw a pass, threw a touchdown. Never played the rest of the game. I wanted to. Felt like I could have played. It started coming back to me. But our doctors refused to let me. They really had no choice. When I ran on the field, it was too late. After that, I couldn't play. I was mad at them. Wanted to play. Felt like I could have. The next day I argued with them, said, "You made a mistake, I should have played." But I understand where they're coming from. In today's game, unlike maybe in years past, there's more of an emphasis on that. That surprised me a little bit. But I think at times it can and probably does interfere. But it really comes down to no one knows your body like you. I always tell people that. I played with a lot of things or a lot of injuries, broken thumb, bad ankle, had a tore knee ligament, and probably have played in games where I had concussions and never really knew it. But I'm sure it happens. Favre never brought up Kitna. A national reporter asked him about Jon and Brett gave his opinion and owned up to his past. For someone who likes to hear the whole story prior to passing judgement, you sure are quick on the draw to try and kick Brett whenever you can. Someone mention hypocrisy?

I never said he brought it up. I was just commenting on the fact that, for a guy who says it's bad to talk about another team's decisions (even though he does it himself), it would have made sense for him to say he had no opinion on that event. He kind of did, in a round about way but couldn't seem to leave it at that. And interesting that he confirmed a couple of the other points I made! I'd say my post was well within the bounds of accurate. :) It will help, however, when journalists stop seeking his opinion about things for which he has no knowledge.

I honestly don't have a problem with him answering questions about concussions, etc. This seemed like a reasonable question and answer. If he starts refusing comments, Viking fans might like it, but he will piss off a lot of reporters and Packer fans alike. I do think he makes dumb comments. Apart, maybe you can defend them, but when he turned on Javon Walker, but then took the other side for Steve McNair? That was a cold move.

Exactly. He threw his own player under the bus. Most people would be figuratively stoned for that, but not the Favre...

I'll admit that Favre seems to get more opinionated as he increases in age (although who doesnt?). However, there are very few QBs I'd rather have taking the snap than Favre. He still plays with a remarkable intensity that is plainly evident in his reactions when something good or bad happens. The guy loves to play and clearly wants to win.

Just say "I love Favre, and even if he's playing like crapola, I've got to find something positive to say about it". This happens with any "beloved" player, be that Favre, Jeter, or the Washington Wizard MJ. Here's a better thing to say. "Even though he's a shell of himself, he's maybe only a little below average, and with a revamped, young defense, that might be good enough for us to win."

I think the Packers have a good shot. The Chargers are NOT an elite team this year. That coaching change was beyond dumb. Rivers is not all that and his WRs are mediocre. I hate teh Pack but they might win

Agreed, JC. I can see the argument to get rid of Marty, but to replace him with Norv was beyond stupid!!

I'm really hoping for the upset against SD. A 3-0 start would go a long way towards the playoffs in the weak NFC.

3-0!!!! :itsgood: The run defense really stepped it up against LT. Rivers had a real good game, but the Pack's pass defense held at the end to stop him. Barnett's INT was huge!!!! Favre was outstanding yet again this game. He's really playing within the system but taking better risks and not throwing up the jump balls. Tying the TD record at home was outstanding. His WR corps of Driver, Jones and Jennings are just fantastic. Each of them had a big day and Jennings big TD catch and run was beautiful. Even the TE's got into the mix with great performaces from Lee and Franks. The passing attack is loaded with weapons. The run game is still not so good, but it showed some signs of getting better. The OL had an outstanding game in pass protection as Favre was rarely pressured. This is a better start than I dared dream of.

Craig, This game is one to be proud of. Your first two games I didn't think really showed much because they were such poor teams and the Packers didn't exactly handle them with authority. But beating the Chargers is a good statement game. Don't you think they should have called a passing play on that last trip to the end zone so Favre could have beat the record in front of the home crowd?

BTW - just for the record - when I used to participate on a Packer board, if I had made a post about the Vikings anything close to what you just posted I would have been called the most vile names. They weren't what you'd call a gracious bunch.

Run the ball and get the TD. MM learned from the last trip to the goal line not to get cute and pass the ball. Happy for the win.

Some of the good guys started a new forum which is fantastic, about 100 or so regular posters. We even have our resident Viking and Bears posters. All is quite civil.

The board I'm referring to was also a spinoff of the old JSO, but definitely not the one you're referring to. I believe I PM'd you about it ages ago and you hadn't heard of it.

The Packers are dangerous. They should have lost the Eagles game but gutted it out. They beat a bad Giants team. Now they beat a good, not great, Chargers team in real good fashion. That helps a team build confidence and momentum. If Favre comes into the Dome and doesn't turn the ball over they will be in the driver's seat (excuse the PUN) for the division. The Bears are not that good. Darn shame for the Vikings to be the worse team in the division.

Let's see - the Detroit Lions won one week and then the next week were humiliated back to earth. Can that be the fate of the Packers too? :D

Therefore they ran the play they thought would work, not the one they thought would set the record.

Hmmm. He doesn't care about the records, but in an interview about whether or not he was ready to retire, he brought up the topic of what his legacy will be. He's thinking about his legacy but not the records? Doesn't pass the smell test. (Yes, HE brought up his legacy) BTW - you'd almost have to be raised in a cave not to recognize the public relations line "I don't care about my personal records, I just want to win games" as just standard PC.

The Packers are going to need another big game from the OL in pass protection. It's all going to come down to that.
