Awful, awful news. Sounds like concussions were a major contributing factor too. Uggh.

Georgia and South Carolina lose to the inferior ACC, how can that be?

The ACCs #2 & #3 teams against SEC also-rans, still surprising though.

Also Rans?
Georgia was still being mentioned as an SEC long shot champion/playoff team this mornng.
South Carolina was a preseason Top 10 team.

ACC 4-0 against the SEC today

The rankings don't mean much. As I've said, we should look at Vegas lines as a much better indicator. They have money and skin in the game. Arkansas, for example, would be basically an even matchup with FSU according to Vegas.

South Carolina is just a very, very bad team. They're probably 10th or 11th best in the SEC this year, if not worse. Florida I really thought would be FSU, and it was damn close. But they are something like the 9th best team in the SEC going against by far the best ACC team. Georgia is a very good team but 1) not the same team without arguably the nation's best player this year (when he played) in Gurley, and 2) they got a sucker punch a day earlier when their season essentially ended with Missouri's win. And 3) they outplayed GT but had 3 big mistakes within 1 yard of a touchdown. I think they beat Georgia Tech 9 times out of 10. Kentucky lost to Louisville, the 4th best team in the ACC. Kentucky is probably the 12th or 13th best team in the SEC.

Again, this is the problem with "head to head" matchups as an indication of conferences. A "fair" setup would have been Alabama vs. FSU (1 vs 1), and Auburn/Ole Miss/MSU vs. GT/Clemson/Louisville. If those matchups are equal, the SEC is 4-0 that weekend.

I have $20 says there is only one SEC team in the playoffs.

Done. You got yourself a deal, man.

I still maintain probably the best 4 teams in the country are all in the SEC West this year. Craziness. I do think Oregon is better than FSU right now. Maybe TCU and KSU are better too. FSU just has not been impressive at all this year in any game.

So, we don't forget.

Can't wait for the excuses now

Well, Dustin is my dude and he's fair, so I don't expect excuses. He will still feel like the SEC West teams are still the best in the land, but he'll take his medicine like a man regardless of his feelings.

Will pay up for sure man, if/when it happens. It's going to be a crazy finish. Oregon/Alabama are locks barring huge upsets. Hell, even with a loss for either at this point they may be in. But if FSU loses to GT? What happens? TCU and Baylor make it? TCU has been good but Baylor certainly hasn't been impressive of late. And Ohio State has been good but how can you put them in the playoff without Barrett? Just an ugly, ugly season.

And yes, I do still believe those SEC teams are the best. They just got beaten down by the grind of their own conference (mainly that West division). I think at least 7-8 teams in the SEC would compete or win the ACC/Big10/Big12/Pac12 conference titles. Again, look to Vegas.

At least 7 or 8 teams.

Alabama, for sure
Missouri, not likely
Georgia, Nick Chubb has done much of what Gurley could have
Miss State, played two real teams and lost
Auburn, played four real teams and lost
Ole Miss, lost three times
Texas A&M, really, they lost 5 times
Florida, so good that they fired their coach

That's eight who would compete, or win those other conferences?
I'm not seeing it.

Show me where Vegas says those 7-8 would compete or win the other conferences.
While you're at it, define compete, because they way you're using it I assume you mean contend.

Take off the blinders man, all these teams proved is that they could beat each other, not unlike every other conference out there.

The ACC went 4-0 against the SEC this weekend -- suck it!
This is such a stupid argument.
Congrats to Georgia Tech, the ACC's second best team upset the SEC's third best team, Georgia. That's a good win.
The other three of these games were not good wins. They were the best teams from the ACC, the Vegas favorites, beating the worst teams from the SEC at home ACC stadiums.
Consider:
The ACC's best team, Florida State, beat the SEC's 10th best team, Florida, by five points.
The ACC's third best team, Clemson, beat the SEC's 12th best team, South Carolina.
The ACC's fourth best team, Louisville, beat the SEC's 13th best team, Kentucky, by four points.
The 10th and 13th best teams in the SEC had the ball driving for the win on the road against the ACC's best and fourth best teams.
What ACC domination!

Alabama/MSU/OleMiss/Auburn/Georgia would all probably not only contend but win those other conferences IMO. Or at least be right there. LSU/Arkansas as well. That's 7. Missouri/A&M would compete. IMO. Hell, this weekend's games against the ACC that you point to actually prove that point. The worst of the SEC was basically "right there" with all of the best in the ACC. And by Vegas Murf, I'm talking about lines of favorites. Any of those top 5 teams (maybe those top 7 with LSU/Arkansas) would be basically even lines against any of the "top" teams like Oregon/TCU/Baylor/Ohio State/Florida State according to Vegas. Alabama would/will be a heavy favorite against just about anyone in the country right now. That's what I mean.

I'll see if I can find the latest link, Murf. But I know in the last couple weeks:

Arkansas was basically "even" against FSU. And LSU was a top 10-12 team in the country by Vegas.

I also like how head to head matchups , actual games, are always thrown out out of consideration because it is always the worst teams from the SEC playing the best teams from other conferences.

Ok, then play other conferences.
That is what we are saying and please explain why exactly that South Carolina, LSU, Texas A&M and Georgia and Ole Miss were ever in the Top 10, what exactly did they do to get there other than being memebrs of the SEC.

I can't wait for you to use the argument that it was a down year, a one year anomaly, or whatever the excuse will be when this is all said and done.

WhatI'm saying is that Alabama is very good and may win it all, but the rest of the coneference is no better than the Big 10/12 or Pac-12, or ACC

I don't disagree with playing other conferences more, Murf. Though that's a two-way street. But it's still a terrible comparison to have the best from one conference playing the weakest from another and pointing to that as a measure. That is the same weak Pac12/SEC argument that Brad was making a couple years back. All conference vs. conference games are not equal, at all. If anything, those games this weekend strengthened the SEC's case, at least against the ACC. You had 3 terrible conference teams put up a fight against some of the very best from the ACC. And 2 good teams (Georgia/GT) play a very close game that Georgia had zero motivation to play and had just lost the nation's best player. I absolutely think all of Auburn/Ole Miss/Georgia/Miss. St are top 10 (or so) teams in the country, along with Alabama of course. And LSU is right there as well.

I think it's a down year for the country this year in college football. I don't think any team is 'great". But I do think the SEC still has most of the best teams this year. I think you put any of those 4-5 teams, at full strength, against any of the other top 5-6 teams, at full strength, and the SEC teams are favored and likely win. It's actually something I've wanted to see for years; an SEC vs. rest of the country bowl system. I think that would be really close.

Missouri 27-11 since leaving the Big 8 to join the SEC

Just goes to show how a mediocre Big 8 team can move over to the SEC and dominate.

Also, Missouri has been about the 8th (or worse) best team in the SEC while they've been there. I'm not seeing the "domination" you're talking about. They're just in the East, not the West. They were always among the best in the Big 8.

Ya, but they haven't really beaten anybody. They'd be dead last in the West and they're not as good as Georgia in the East.

Maybe not "easy" but Alabama (if it comes to that) will be a heavy favorite over FSU I would think.

Really. They're headed to thier 2nd straight SEC Title game

I'd hardly, hardly call that 8th worse. Hell last year they finshed #5 BCS
and this year are ranked 17th.

I say again; they'd finish dead last in the West. They would be the underdogs in every game against the West, and they were the underdog (and got killed) against Georgia. They're no better than 7th or 8th best in the conference IMO. They're just lucky they play in a "down" East right now. They played Arkansas at home (their best win of the year) and a reeling A&M team. They didn't have to face any of the "great" SEC teams this year in the West. Meanwhile Georgia had to play both GT and Auburn. Once Florida gets a real coach they'll be competing for 3rd or 4th place in the East again, in a conference that's dominated by the West.

I do believe the SEC needs to lose it cream puff "partners" and play some road games against better opponents.
They kind of insulate themselves with their non-conference schedules.
Play at least one game against an opponent outside your conference who is consistently ranked in the Top 20 at least.

Until then, the SEC is just a good ol' boys club kind of conference.
Gotta step outside your comfort zone and let some others take a swipe.
If you're all that.

Clay Travis had an interesting idea today: eliminate all conference championships under the new format. His point is that we've already decided the conference over the course of 8-9 conference games and a lot of times you may be getting a rematch anyway. That way you could crown conference champions based on the regular season (or even add a regular season conference game) and then add a round to the playoffs.

I think he's right.

I agree with you Art that I'd like to see better out of conference games, but we are going to see less and less of that, not more. Where would Michigan State be, for example, if they hadn't played Oregon this year? They may be in the playoff. Those games generally hurt a team more than they help, especially with the playoff format. It seems an unnecessary risk for most teams.

How about getting rid of all conferences?
Just a Western conference and an Eastern conference.
Make the old conferences into divisions.
Play 9 division games (or 8) and one 2 intra-conference games (one home, one road).
Then go with an NFL format for the playoff based on record.

I'm good with that. Hell, we're going to have something more similar to that soon anyway when the NCAA is inevitably abolished and all players are (finally) getting paid. Plus basically only 50-60 schools mattering at all in these things. That day is coming very, very soon.
