Tough one as Royals lose 3B Moustakas for rest of season with torn ACL. Royals no reasonable replacement for fantasy, but available choices include Valencia, Lamb, Nunez, Reynolds

Love how my boy Danny Vee has kept plugging away.

They lost their heart and soul. Won't win it all without him.

Moose fill-in option, former Twin

The Royals have signed infielder Steve Tolleson to a minor league contract, tweets Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com. The 32-year-old will report to Triple-A Omaha, he adds.

It actually amazes me that guys with the wear and tear and age of Arod are still hitting effortless bombs. And you have young "studs" in the prime of their physical fitness that rarely get it out of the infield.

Julio Urias, the first teenage starting pitcher in the major leagues since Seattle's Felix Hernandez in 2005, gave up three runs in the first and lasted just 2 2/3 innings for the Dodgers.

So it's not just the Twins?!? Thank goodness they're not the only ones w/rooks that disappoint.

I'd like to relay a story about a Met game I went to in 1992 (Just checked baseball reference). Jeff Torborg was the manager that year and the Mets had what was considered a contender. They had what people believed to be enough talent, but they went into a horrible swoon as I remember it. Torborg was getting criticized a lot toward the end because the Mets fell out of contention during mid-summer. By the time it was mid-September the fans were getting impatient.

A friend of mine named John was a big Mets fan (as was I back then). We planned to go to the Yonkers Raceway (an hour drive for us), but John was driving and he decided why not make the additional :45 minutes to an hour and go to Shea Stadium. I didn't argue. It was a cool and raw night (temps in the 40s after the sun went down) and it was a weeknight. In other words, it was the perfect night for angry Mets fans to vent.

The Mets held on and played the Phillies tight all game as I remember it, but then Jeff Torborg brought in the hapless Anthony Young who probably best embodied the Mets losing ways that year. It was a move that was met with groans and jeers. As Torborg went back to the dugout he got plenty of cat calls. Anthony Young, I believe, still owns the longest losing streak for a pitcher. He'd strung over 20 losses in a row at this point. It was insane. Anway, Young came in and he proceeded to put runners on much to the disgust of the now seething crowd. When Lenny Dykstra (or someone) laid down a bunt, Young threw the ball into the outfield and a couple of runs scored. People were screaming at Torborg when he brought in Young but they were absolutely ROARING when he stepped out of the dugout to take out YOung.

This was a crowd of about 5,000 people and 4,500 of them were men. Most of them looked like blue collar guys, firefighters, construction workers, prison guards, etc......many of them had a few under their belt. These were not casual fans. These were guys who were longtime fans and you could feel the crowd simmering all game. All game the sparse crowd was loud, but in control. They cheered loudly for the Mets (because they hated that Philly team), but deep down it was as though this bunch was waiting for this to happen. And when it did the lid blew off. The interesting thing I remember about this game is that the crowd was tightly packed together in a small space. There seemed to be a togetherness in their disdain for what had happened this season. They missed the mark so badly

Hard to describe it all, but that was the nastiest crowd I have ever seen. Looking up the Mets that year they lost only 90 games. Torborg was not even fired either. He lasted about 30 games the next year and was cut loose.
The fans made their point loud and clear that night

The San Diego Padres are currently in trade discussions with the Chicago White Sox about a deal that would send right-handed pitcher James Shields to the Windy City. According to a report from Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the talks have "energy" and "significant momentum," as a deal could come to fruition soon, though nothing is imminent.

Last February, the 34-year-old Shields signed a four-year, $75 million contract with the Padres, expecting to compete for a playoff spot, after the organization made numerous moves in the offseason. However, they are more of cellar dwellers, and he has an opt-out this winter of the final two years and $44 million left on his contract.

The White Sox have let everyone else know that they will be aggressive on the trade market in the upcoming months, leading up to the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. They are currently sitting in first place of the American League Central with a 27-22 record.

In 64 and 2/3 innings pitched this season with the Padres, Shields has posted a 2-6 record, along with a 3.06 ERA, 3.87 FIP and a 125 ERA+, along with 56 strikeouts and 23 walks allowed, over ten starts. Over his eleven-year big league career with the Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals and the Padres, he is the owner of a 129-103 record, along with a 3.72 ERA, in 2177 and 1/3 innings pitched over 329 appearances (328 starts
).

It was strange how that night materialized. As I remember, I really didn't want to go to the racetrack, but my friend convinced me to get off my ass. Next thing you know we are driving all the way down to Shea Stadium. I knew it was going to be a tiny crowd, but it turned out to be a vocal one.

By the way, Anthony Young lost TWENTY SEVEN GAMES IN A ROW.
Young will always hold a place in Mets lore thanks to a somewhat ignominious feat he achieved while pitching for the orange & blue. As many of you probably recall, the record he set was dropping a mind-boggling 27 consecutive decisions from May 6, 1992 to July 24, 1993.

When you think about it, it really is an astounding accomplishment considering the sheer probability stacked against such a streak. And in Young's defense, it obviously required a lot of help from his teammates -- if you want to call it that -- to break the 82-year-old record. In fact, Young didn't even pitch all that poorly during the stretch, posting a 4.36 ERA in that span. In an '09 Daily News interview, Young recalled, 'Everything that could happen, happened. It was just destiny, I guess.' At one point during the streak, Young converted 12 straight saves and threw 23.2 straight scoreless innings subbing for closer John Franco; yet the streak lived. Brutal.

Looking it up, the game I went to was only his 14th loss. It is hard to fathom how he went out and lost 13 more in row the next season and even harder to fathom how Jeff Torborg came back to manage that next season...And continued to trot him out there!

Anyone see Drew-baby get drenched last night in the post-game celly?
Didn't go as planned.

The Mariners are so angry from the Twins sweeping them they are laying a couple of touchdowns on the Padres today.

Arizona sunk moolah into this, and 7 under with bad pitching results will likely be trouble for someone(s).

AJ Pollock getting injured for the season before Game 1 did not help. And Shelby Miller being bad was a deathblow. He's a good pitcher. Talented. But he is in a bad cycle with run support last season and injury, poor performance this season.

Jake Arrieta tossed seven shutout innings, but the Dodgers piled the runs on late to break the Cubs' 23-game regular-season win streak with their ace on the mound.

Guess they're not missing the Panda at all.

GM's should take a good look at these kinds of signings. There are plenty of guys who have "earned" the big payday, only to go into the tank, forever.

Ryan has spent foolishly, but he's not the only one. His problem is, that given the players they have on hand, he just added more of the same type of guy.

In the field/Dh and pitching.

Indians outfielder Marlon Byrd was officially slapped with a 162-game suspension after testing positive for a performance enhancing substance, as Vince Grzegorek of Cleveland Scene first reported on Twitter. Byrd had previously been hit with a 50-game ban, meaning he was a second-time offender for purposes of the league’s more punitive current PED regime.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports noted via Twitter that Byrd chose not to appeal. The veteran has released a statement disclaiming fault, as has his attorney, both via Rosenthal (here and here). They suggest that a tainted supplement is to blame for the growth hormone secretagogue Ipamorelin that was found in Byrd’s system. Given his age and history, it’s fair to wonder whether this is the end of the line for the veteran, who has seen action in fifteen major league seasons.

Cleveland added the 38-year-old on a minor league deal to shore up an outfield that had several question marks — due, in part, to the PED suspension of presumptive center fielder Abraham Almonte. His own 80-game ban will finish up early next month
