I think there are some exceptions in case of injury to the relief pitcher, so a crafty manager might be able to get around the restriction.

I want to make sure I understand the new 3 batter rule for RPs. If I understand correctly;
RP must either finish any inning he enters or pitch to at least three batters.
If he enters a new inning after completing the prior one he must once again pitch to three batters.
There is no allowance for a lefty or righty specialist to just get one batter.
Does this rule apply to starters each inning they pitch?
Are there any exceptions (I presume injury) or anything else I'm missing?

I think the relief pitcher must either finish the inning or pitch to at least 3 batters.

There is no requirement to pitch to 3 more batters if he finished the previous inning.

Thanks. I thought I heard any inning they go out to pitch they had to finish the inning or pitch to three batters.

Here's something unique. Sean Manaea just finished the first two inning on only 11 pitches. I'm sure it isn't a record, but honestly it's the least pitches for two innings I can think of.

I would have guessed that. Who do you remember doing it? Not looked up, but remember.
EDIT: I just looked it up. You were guessing and you were wrong. Or shall we say you were LYING There are 106 occurrences of 3 pitch innings in baseball history 6 of those were first innings. Nobody ever followed it up with a 3 pitch second inning.

I guessed. But I can't believe they were keeping track of it back to the beginning of times. So I still believe it is 6.

Thank you. Honestly, I don't recall less than 11 pitches for the first two innings. Next time you see the same or less point it out.

I'm going to post it here and in the prediction thread. Acuna is being walked multiple times a game and stealing a base about half the time. Freddie Freeman batting right behind him is a great RBI guy. Acuna has scored 15 times in the last 7 games. He currently stands at 31 games played 31 runs scored. My prediction: He will finish this season with more runs scored than games played.

More 3 pitch inning trivia. One that will blow your mind.
First off I miscalculated the number of 3 pitch innings. It was 82 in the AL 106 in the NL so 188 total 3 pitch innings. Strangely only six times in the first inning.

Former Senators great Walter Johnson did it 4 times.
Red Faber did it twice in the same game in 1915. The 3rd and 5th innings.

This is the one that will blow your mind.
In 1997 Nelson Cruz had a 3 pitch inning.

Not our Nelson Cruz, but still too cool.

Alec Mills, a 22nd-round pick out of Tennessee-Martin who is 28 years old and hasn't spent a full season in the major leagues, just threw the 16th no-hitter in Chicago Cubs history by shutting down the Milwaukee Brewers.

Dave Roberts said he “took exception” to Trent Grisham not showing the respect he believes he should’ve shown to a pitcher like Clayton Kershaw. He said he has no problem with players admiring home runs but he thinks a pitcher of Kershaw’s caliber deserves more respect.

Boo Hoo

No wonder Kershaw wilts in the postseason. Wussified

Major League Baseball and the Players Association reached agreement late last night on a plan for the 2020 postseason, including neutral-site bubbles for the Division Series, League Championship Series and World Series, sources tell The Athletic. Announcement expected today.

Zero incentive to win the division for HFA

only thing now is to try and get the best matchup.

Manfred the Moron also talked to some group how they want to get fans in for the LCS and WS

yet they want to keep the players sequestered the whole time.

What a dude.

And

Shockingly

MLB plans to keep the playoffs watered down

Manfred also said the expanded, 16-team postseason is likely to remain beyond 2020, adding that “an overwhelming majority” of owners had already endorsed the concept before the pandemic.
“I think there’s a lot to commend it,” he said.

Of course.

Look at the AL. The 8 qualifying teams have been known for several weeks already. It took a lot of juice out of the meaning of these games. So let's stick with it!!

$$ grab for the have-nots.

So do this

AND play 162 games?

Can't see that being a good thing. The roster numbers will need to remain higher to not kill bullpen pitchers

Senior FanGraphs writer/ESPN contributor

If a 79-83 team can eliminate a 101-61 team from championship contention by winning two of three games, THEN THERE IS NO ACTUAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

That many teams makes a 162 regular season kind of pointless IMO.

which I wouldn't have a big problem with if they make the fan experience a little more like minor league baseball. Cheap tickets and cheap concessions, which I think is coming anyway. People found other avenues to spend their entertainment dollar on during COVID.
