I get the point too - but it's not nearly that extreme of a distinction. It's entirely possible for fans of football to be very well versed in the game, know the plays, know how you defend against a pass versus a run, understand the role of the nose tackle and the strong safety, get the reason you might go no huddle in certain circumstances and why you might call time out in others. In other words - I would say that most avid football fans are closer to college students talking to pro players. No doubt that until you've played at a pro level you will never understand the complete intricacies of the game, but we the fans are hardly at a kindergarten level.
