Part of Dave Cameron's "trade value" series, ranking the top 50 players in the game based on trade value. TBH, Buxton is a lot lower on the list than I'd imagine, but Dave makes good points re: the reasons. He gets healthy again, he shoots up this list. He still currently slots a few spots ahead of last night's HR champ, which is impressive in itself. FWIW, Dozier "just missed" the cut. Which seems fair. You'd be hardpressed to find a GM that would trade Buxton for Dozier straight up, for example.

If Buxton could stay healthy, he’d likely be ranked significantly higher than this, as both scouts and ZIPS see a star in the making. But as the injuries continue to pile up, it’s becoming fair to question how the lost development time will affect him, and whether he’ll ever play enough to live up to the substantial hype. The tools are there for Buxton to be a high-level player, and any team looking to the future would love to have him for his upside alone. But he is also a very high risk asset, with more bust potential than just about anyone else you’ll find in this series.

But with six years of team control remaining, three of them at the league minimum, Buxton doesn’t have to be a star right away to justify his placement here. Even with an adjustment period, he offers substantial long-term rewards, and he’s close enough to providing real value in the big leagues that teams could justify paying through the nose to acquire him. It’s an extreme risk/reward play, but when the reward is this high, so is the price.

I believe that this is the point that Ralph was making.

Yes, but for the wrong reasons. He's not a risk because of a lack of hitting ability shown, as was suggested. He has shown that throughout the minors. He's a risk for injury; that's about it.

Also, of course he's a higher risk than anyone in this series. Because he's also the youngest player on it (I'm guessing) with the least major league experience (again, I'm guessing). I'd bet about the only one that is in his range in the series is probably Correa.

From reading Ralph's and your argument about this I don't believe for a minute that Buxton's lack of hitting is the only reason for Ralph's argument as you're implying.

And I wasn't playing baseball.

I did a 115 page thesis, student taught and worked 30-hour work weeks during the spring of 1995. I figure I worked 70 to 80 hours a week for about five or six months. My story isn't unique

I played softball 3 nights a week and in tournaments on the weekends. One tournament lasted until 2:00 in the morning.

Sure. But it's still a lot tougher schedule and conditions than most people realize. And I think that was Ed's point. Only the best of the best make the majors. So many more toil away in the minors for minimum wage or low wages and a crazy schedule/life. #thegrind is very accurate IMO.

Very few jobs have longer hours than these guys' overall schedule and/or less pay as well. That's the point. It's why the lawsuit is progressing.

That makes life harder on them, not easier. They have to essentially find odd jobs for 4 months (don't forget ST, etc.) to make ends meet in most cases.

#MNTwins have released RHP Scott Atchison and 1B Mike Gonzales off @ChattLookouts roster, per Southern League transactions page.

Atchison, 39, posted a 1.80 ERA in four outings (5 IP) for Lookouts. Allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out two.

Mike Gonzales, 27, was a 9th-round #MNTwins pick in 2008. Slashed .267/.346/.436 for his career. Hit .223 in 61 gms for Lookouts this year.
