Sweens are you softening your stance on Barnes. He has been nothing but sensational so far.

Nope.

I'm not saying that Barnes will be a star, but he just might be an OK starter someday. Did Greg Maddox throw any faster than Barnes?

1) different game today.
2) you can't really glean much of anything from a college guy in low A ball.

Didn't they put him at CR right away though? Pretty good start you have to admit.

Maddux would suck.

Yes, much faster when he came into the league. Maddox is an anomaly. He developed freakish command and a freakish two seamer with great movement that he could put on the outside black any time he wanted to. He is the most frequently referenced pitcher when people try to say a guy with low velocity can do the job. What gets overlooked is that for every Maddux there are hundreds of other pitchers who couldn't overcome the lack of velocity.

No, he started with the E Twins and moved up to CR. As Dustin said, a college pitcher in low A can do wonderful things out there. We'll see how it translates as he moves up. Hey, if I'm dead wrong about Barnes, nobody will be happier about it than I am.

Maddux threw maybe 94 when he was first with the Cubs. I have never seen anyone control a back door slider, breaking ball, and fastball plus change speed on all of them. Then when he didn't have his stuff he would throw in a forkball/splitter. Still struck out batters left and right when he topped out at 87 in his late years.

Yep, a pitcher like Maddux, who can transform from young power pitcher to savvy vet control pitcher, absolutely dominate and win over 300 games in the process is about as rare as it gets in baseball. Just a great career.

I have seen Maddux throw a knuckle curve---you name the pitch Maddux could throw it. Most pitchers throw 3 maybe four pitches. I think I watched one game where Maddux just threw is cutter, backup slider, and curveball against the Twins after they put up 4 runs off him early in his last years. He basically refused to throw his regular fastball the rest of the game and that was all we scored.

In this scene, Barnes will play the part of Barnes and Sweeney will play the part of Elias.
