Relapse or extinction burst?

Double-A hitting prospect Eddie Rosario was slated to return to the New Britain lineup Saturday night after being benched for the past four games by Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith.

There was no injury, said Brad Steil, Twins director of minor league operations.

“Just a team situation,” Steil said in a text message.

Rosario, 22, went 0 for 4 Monday at Trenton, N.J., dropping his season average to .237 with the Rock Cats. He hadn’t played since, but Steil and Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said Rosario was due back in the lineup Saturday.

Rated the Twins’ No. 6 prospect by Baseball America before the season, Rosario sat out the first two months on a 50-game suspension for a second violation of Major League Baseball’s drug-of-abuse policy.

Rosario, splitting time between second base and the outfield, was saddled with a career-low .277 on-base percentage but was slugging .392 with 18 extra-base hits in 194 at-bats. The left-handed batter had struck out 37 times in 49 games while hitting five homers.

Last year at New Britain, Rosario hit .284 with a .330 on-base percentage while slugging .412 after a mid-June promotion.

Eddie Rosario is leading off and playing center field tonight for @RockCats. Hicks DH, bats third. Polanco hits/plays 2nd.

The Twins sure have "problems" with players at AA. Can't be the manger.

No info. available from Hartford-NBritain newspapers on Rosario's absence. But, that's normal - if it's not Red Sox / Yankees, the Hartford paper ignores it. And, the NewBritain paper oftentimes now does not even include any game coverage; that may be in-part because of the increasingly bad business behavior by the NewBritain owner. (Latest is the team's apparent refusal to pay $160K of property taxes - there is a chance that the team would be locked out of their final home game)

Mason Malotakis left last nights game due to an elbow injury. He has posted a 1.54 ERA in 9 games with the rock cats.

CHICAGO -- Twins Double-A hitting prospect Eddie Rosario was slated to return to the New Britain lineup Saturday night after being benched for the past four games by Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith.

This guy Smith had an issue with Sano last year. I saw a video of that HR trot and the punishment in no way fit the crime. The Twins also benched Arcia last year. The reason given was that he didn't run out a grounder and that was a bald faced lie. I actually watched that game. He struck out in his only at bat. When the Red Wings took the field in the next inning he didn't come out. It also happened to be the day Butera was called up. My guess is Arcia found out about that and he was pissed. Why shouldn't he have been?
WHat is it with the Twins and young Latin players?

I hear this Smith guy is "old school" which could mean he is a control freak. Then again, the kid has had his issues.

I know one thing. If a reason is given I would be very skeptical believing what the Twins say. THey made the Sano thing sound much worse than it actually was and they flat out lied about why Arcia was benched.

Rosario has played mostly CF and LF with NB this year, just a few games at 2B.
--I did not see the 2013 incident with Sano "showing up" the pitcher after a HR. But, I did see a very brief video, and I'd agree that it did not look like Sano show-boated. But, also remember the pitcher was Bobby Lanigan, who Twins had just recently released from NB. It's quite possible there was bad-blood between Lanigan and some of the RockCats - and maybe Sano was just the fallguy for a message to the entire Rockcats team from Twins management.

Gotta catch up on the game today; sounds like I missed a great one. But I just got back from a 2 day trip to Louisville to check out Rochester and complete my "every Twins affiliate" trek this summer. Was awesome. Figured I'd give a report while fresh:

The lineup is bad. There's just not much there right now. Pinto is like a "one of these doesn't belong" game right now there. He hit the ball very hard almost every time up this weekend. Results showed on Saturday; not as much tonight. Pitch framing sure looked fine to me; I sat 1st row behind home for most of the action. Hamburger was shaky early on Saturday but settled in okay. Probably won't be anything longterm though. Oliveros had some nastiness to him. Got hit hard in the leg on a comebacker and that rattled him a little but he bore down and did solid work. Gave some chin music a few times. Tonkin was dominant on Saturday. Hitters looked overmatched; like he was toying with them. Still think he's too good for AAA overall, as his numbers tend to show.

Today was the really fun day. Got to see Meyer's start. He dominated all day even though the results won't show it fully. He allowed a walk and a single in the 6th but struck 2 guys out before they pulled him with I believe 91 pitches so must have been the pitch count. Had he stayed in I have little doubt he would have ended the threat. Instead Achter came in and just sucked tonight. Allowed both runs to score and another. He was terrible. Meyer only allowed 2 hits all day though and a couple of walks, to go with 8 k's. Just overpowering guys. And he was just fantastic. Oohs and ahhs from the crowd all day and he was consistently hitting 95-98 with a hammer in the high 80's. His 2nd to last pitch, 90 pitches in, was 98. Ya at times he would be a bit out of control, but that's going to happen with his frame and I honestly think it's partly because of the life on his fastball, which was very good. Plus when you throw 98 at 6-9 that's going to look like 103 to most hitters. I've seen Meyer a couple of times before but this was my first time for a full start. Came away very, very impressed. He was the best pitcher in the Twins' organization (top to bottom) I've seen this year. And it made me even madder that he's not up. I'm watching Fri/Sat in Oakland next week and I'm still holding out hope the Twins do the right thing and make his debut come Saturday. Then I'd get the Twins' best two pitchers in Gibson/Meyer back to back. Anyway, we've got a good one on our hands folks. If the Twins finally realize it. Ibarra looked good the first inning, even against mostly righties. Touched up to 94-95 on a few pitches. Athletic, some good life. Reminded me a bit of a young JC Romero, in a good way. Didn't fair as well in the 2nd inning though. They brought Tonkin in for a potential 5-out save and he just didn't have it tonight. Not sure if he pitched Friday or not, but he looked tired and a little out of control tonight. Was funny to me that Florimon was batting 9th tonight even with that weak lineup. Was only able to make it through 10 innings before I had to hit the road back. Game went 15.

Overall was a lot of fun. Wish I could make it for May tomorrow but I came back grinning like a 5-year old after Meyer's performance. And the Bats' park is fantastic; as good as any in the country. Also was cool; Peter King was sitting directly behind me and we got to chat for a bit. Was fortuitous because we're screening our Sony football movie for him this week. Seemed like a good guy. Very small world.

I know you're in love with Meyer, but if he gets pulled for pitch count prior to completing 6 innings, then that needs to be worked on especially when it's common for him. If he comes up and facing better hitters, it could be worse. He'll come around.

Jim, there was no reason to pull him at 91 pitches with 1 out to go, other than they are over compensating for him developing a sore shoulder last year. I can't remember a prospect who has had his pitch count so strictly monitored as Meyer this year.

Yep, it was all about a pitch count, not effectiveness. He gave up 2 hits through 5 2/3 and I believe he struck out the last 2 guys he faced, with his 2nd to last pitch hitting 98 (hammer for the K on last pitch). As I said, I have zero doubt in my mind that had he been allowed to continue he would have ended the threat. I think he had about 2 hard hit balls off of him all day.

It is interesting to look at Meyer's innings. He only pitched 104 innings total between the minors last year and AFL ball. So if you subscribe to the "no more than 30 more innings" theory:

He's at 112 now. Would only give him about 22 more innings to work with this year.

2012 he did pitch 129 innings though, so one could argue you could ramp him up to the 150-160 range this year too.

Decisions, decisions...

22 dingers/80 rbi's in FLA state league now for Walker.

If they can figure out how to improve that average, even a LITTLE.
