before Berrios went out injured Law tweeted this.

Berrios giving up some hard contact tonight - lack of downhill plane or FB life really hurts him

He just will not like the kid too much because of his lack of height.

Berrios will show him.

Yep. And I'm still a little uneasy about the overall frame. But I've mentioned before; he reminds me a little of a young Santana in that he's so athletic and is by all accounts an extremely hard worker. Maximizes his potential. The kid wants to be great and will be.

Report out that Vargas being called up. I haven't even seen much of his name lately in Ed's reports

In Kennys Vargas's last 29 games (since 6/22), he is hitting .173/.271/.298 (.569). Overall, .281/.360/.472 (.832), 17-2B, 17-HR.

It's always about earning a promotion with the Twins.

I'd like to see the Twins put Buxton and Hicks at Roch for the last month of the AAA season.

Give Buxton an opp to see what he could do and if Hicks has really improved his approach.

Like I said; a right handed Louisiana Lightning.

Agreed. Hicks has been thrown in over his head, demoted, thrown in over his head again and demoted 2 levels. I would like to see him spend August with Rochester before coming back up here.

I like the aggressive move to bring up Vargas but are the Twins beginning to think that AAA is unnecessary? Bert Blyleven and TK like to say AA is the best league in the minors. If you can make it there you are ready. That kind of generalization is typical. It should be a case by case thing.

And AA is not better than AAA if we are talking talent. Maybe TK and Bert like AA better but they surely can't be sayin the talent is better. No freakin way. AAA has plenty of players who are older, better and have been in the show. It's called AAA for a reason and AA is called AA for a reason.

Hicks needs to be in AAA, not AA....and he needs to be there so he can face more experienced pitching. They made their damn point with him now try to develop him. NO reason why he shouldn't be in AAA. He needs to face better pitching. No way in heck AA pitching is tougher, no matter what TK or Bert says.

Give TR full marks for unloading Fuld in what looks like a steal. He needs to get rid of Suzuki and Willingham TODAY. Try to get a top 10 prospect for Suzuki if you can't but for heaven's sake......trade these two players. Bring in youth. You never know who can surprise. Willingham and Suzuki should have nothing to do with the future and therefore need to be gone within the next two hours.

I don't agree. Look at the Rochester and New Britain rosters. Rochester is full of AAAA guys. New Britain has legitimate prospects they are just younger.

That's why I used to love the Twins having their AA in Orlando. AA in the Southern League is where they used to separate the men from the boys. If a guy could continue to produce in the second half of that grind of a season, he had a real chance to be a big league ball player.

Been watching Levi Michael back, Ed. Kid just really needs to stay healthy. This year he's hit when healthy. .779 OPS at SS in Ft. Myers. Still 23. Not completely done yet. Needs to show something in New Britain next year or later this year. But he could be another one to add to the mix within 18 months or so IF healthy.

Hicks with a double and HR tonight. 3 for 4. Probably pissed off about Vargas. There is NO reason for Hicks to be at NB other than ridiculous organizational spite. He is way too good for that level.

I see Rosario out tonight. Hmm.

Hicks should certainly be at AAA Rochester. Not sure why he was demoted to New Britain?

Because the Twins are spiteful jackasses who have no idea how to develop players.

NB used Wimmers as closer tonite. Was effective, but nearly all pitches were in the 70s. Is he just still recovering from surgery? Is that his normal style? (Also, Berrios is listed as probable starter for this Sunday; hopefully that means the other day problem was nothing).

Vargas Tries To Emulate Former Twin

Double-A New Britain first baseman Kennys Vargas doesn’t try to hide his admiration for David Ortiz.

He wears the same sunglasses as Big Papi. He’s picked up many of the same mannerisms. He occasionally wears the same trademark beard style, and his swing is a dead-on impersonation of the Red Sox star.

Vargas wanted to could copy his role model in one other way, too: By getting called up to the Twins.

For Ortiz, that day came when he was just 21. For Vargas, 23, that day came Thursday.

“I feel like I’m ready,” the 6-foot-5, switch-hitting slugger from Puerto Rico said. “I think I can help them.”

Like Ortiz, Vargas’ training is at first base, mostly because he weighs 270 pounds. But the Twins have Joe Mauer signed through 2018, so Vargas’ natural position may be blocked. His range is so-so in the infield, however, so giving him more room to cover seems problematic.

Farm director Brad Steil told him that the Twins would consider a request to play the outfield, Vargas said, but only if he slimmed down.

“He said, ‘If you want it, you have to come down to 255,’ ” Vargas said.

The Twins already have seen plenty from Vargas to get excited about at the plate. Signed as a nondrafted free agent out of high school in Canovanas, P.R., in 2009, Vargas has power to all fields, but when he pulls the ball, it travels 400 feet.

Vargas, who served a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs in 2012, hit .288/.369/.484 with 17 homers through 95 games at New Britain.

“I told him, ‘We can use another Big Papi,’ ” said big league manager Ron Gardenhire, who managed Ortiz for one season in 2002. “He’s a big kid with a bright future.”

I think I've mentioned this before but Papi really has mentored him. They got to be close a couple years ago in ST since Boston and the Twins are together. And apparently every spring Ortiz has him over for dinner or stay at his place, etc.

Fans are going to love Kennys. Supposedly he's never upset outwardly. Always a big smile on his face and personality.

Hicks is on the Tori Hunter plane.....he'll be 25-26 before he gets it and he will be up for good and play for over 10 years. The kid couldn't hit a 70 mph changeup at the end of May from either side of the plate and then gave up switch hitting/began switch hitting again. The best thing they could do was send him to NB because he was even struggling at Rochester.

Hicks has been given 2 chances to hit Major League pitching...he will be back once his confidence is.
