Does anyone think Rosario comes north after Spring Training next year? I think he'll hit up here.

Depends on the manager and how much say that person has vs Ryan's tight-wad Super 2 phobia.

IMO

Rosario will be the starting day LF.

I hope you're right Ed. Throw him in left, Arcia in right, and have Hicks keep center warm until Buxton is ready.

East wins the AFL all star game. Rosario was 0 for 2 with a walk and SB. Reed pitched a scoreless inning.

Rosario played very little at 2B this year; in that TV game, did anyone notice the hitch in his swing? I've always thought major-league pitching would take advantage of that.

Now I can't figure out if Rosario has sweet swing or a hitch in his swing? Or maybe it's a sweet swing with a hitch.

RockCats held an online charity auction this week on a very unique item. The Byron Buxton game-worn jersey.

To me, it's a bit of both. I've noticed the hitch as well, Mike. But he has such a good approach and makes good contact, not sure if it will matter or not for him. Someone said he might be the best of the prospect bunch. I don't think so, personally, and I've always been his biggest fan on here since basically rookie ball. I think (assuming he can kick the weed longterm) he's going to be a very solid ML player for a long time, but if he's not at 2b, I no longer see "star". I think a good "value" comparison in a corner OF spot would be someone like Jacque Jones, though he's got a better arm, not quite Jones' range, and a much quieter/better approach at the plate. Jones was a solid player for a long time, but never a star. That's what I see from Rosario in the majors. Whereas Buxton I still think will be a superstar with his all around package, and Sano will at least be a star with his elite hit tool. Meyer I think (assuming health) will also be very, very good.

A lot of this is a positional thing too. A high end SP, a true elite CF'er, and an elite 3b are all just so much more valuable than a good corner OF'er. It's why I keep Rosario at 2b as long as possible, even with Dozier here. You can always trade one of them.

You're right about approach making a big difference. There are guys in the HOF who had a hitch in their swings (Winfield comes to mind). Arcia had the combination of being a hacker and having the hitch, which was the biggest reason for the inconsistency. He got slightly more patient and Bruno helped him iron out some of the hitch (still there, but less pronounced) and he gained a measure of consistency. We'll soon see what Rosario brings to the majors.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Byron Buxton underwent surgery Thursday to repair a broken middle finger on his left hand, but he is expected to be ready for Spring Training, Twins director of Minor League operations Brad Steil said Friday.

Buxton, ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect by MLB.com, sustained the injury on Monday while trying to make a diving catch in the Arizona Fall League. It was originally believed that Buxton only had a dislocated finger, but after visiting a hand specialist, it was determined he fractured his finger and needed surgery.

Buxton, 20, played in 13 games in the Arizona Fall League with the Salt River Rafters. He hit .263/.298/.311 with two doubles, six RBIs and five stolen bases en route to being named a Fall League All-Star. He'll be replaced by fellow Twins prospect Eddie Rosario on the All-Star roster.

The surgery ends an injury-riddled season for Buxton, who dealt with a lingering wrist injury sustained in March that he re-injured in early May. He also saw his Minor League season come to an end with a concussion in an outfield collision on Aug. 13.

Buxton played in 30 games at Class A Advanced Fort Myers, hitting .240/.313/.405 with four homers, four doubles, two triples and 16 RBIs before getting promoted to Double-A New Britain. But Buxton sustained his concussion in his first game at Double-A, and he didn't return to action until the Fall League after working out at the club's instructional league in Fort Myers, Fla. Buxton played in just 44 games on the year, including his time in the Fall League.

As long as Hicks is walking more than he's striking out, I'm happy.

I really think that Molitor will get the best out of Hicks.
Not a superstar by any means, but put him in left, with great defense and league average OF splits, and I'd be fine with him.

Agree, Murf. And I think the bar is lower than some are assuming to do just that:

Among ALL OF'ers in baseball last year with 400 PA's or more, only 26 had OPS's above .700. That's less than 1 per team.

I'm reasonably confident Hicks can put up a .700 OPS or more next year with excellent defense. If so, he'd not only be ok, but he'd be a well above average regular. Offense is down across the board in baseball right now, both due to this golden age of pitching, advancements in defensive analysis/positioning, and due to the shrinking strike zone.

It's also easy to forget that he's only had 538 PA's so far in the majors, total. That's not even a full season's worth.

How does a smaller strike zone negatively impact hitting???

Yep.....they reduced the strike zone after the 68 season to get more hitting.

I think the one thing that has negatively impacted hitting is the extensive use of guys out of the pen who can come out and throw gas. hitting is so dependent on familiarity.

But I think I read the strike zone isn't really shrinking, it's just moving lower.

As Steven Colbert said on the inaugural Colbert Report ...

"That’s where truth comes from — the gut. Facts come from the brain — and some people think that makes facts better. But did you know you have more nerve endings in your stomach than in your brain? You can look it up….Now somebody's gonna say, "I did look that up and it's wrong."

Yep. My bad.

And I agree, Miles, a lot is the relievers and specialists are just so much more frequent and dominant now. Velocity certainly isn't everything, but obviously it's something. And if you think of it in those terms; 20 years ago there may have been a couple guys in the sport throwing upper 90's or triple digits. Now there's 2-3 of those guys on every TEAM.
