Among NFL LT’s, Riley Reiff has the 10th-highest cap hit ($13.2M). His avg yearly salary ($11.75M) is 14th.

He was the #Vikings highest-graded o-lineman in 2019 (71.2), ranking 26th of 60 starting tackles per @PFF

Cutting him would create $8.8M in cap space & $4.4 dead cap.

Based on that info it would be foolish to cut Reiff or move him to guard.

KG do you have me on block [&:]

Reiff could be designated a post June cut, increasing his cap savings to 11M and defering 2.2M to 2021.

It would be foolish to move him to G.

Depending on inhouse T options and the draft, it might not be foolish to cut him. It also depends on what we do with Harris.

I like the idea of picking up a franchise LT in the draft if it possible. Those guys are hard to get. We'll have to see yet what happens as this free agency/ trade period unfolds, of course.

Dana Turner -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (3/22/2020 1:58:25 PM)

When a guy like Randle Cobb gets a 3 year $27 million dollar contract at the age of 29, you just have to scratch your head. That falls squarely in the category of ridiculous!

Spreading out the dead cap means we still have to pay it. Just later. Part of me is wondering if we should go all in on the rebuild now and suffer the consequences. However, the restructure on Hunter was a step in the wrong direction if we are going that route.

We have 50M in cap space next year and 120M in 2022.

The 50M is with only 32 players signed.

I'm starting to get on board with drafting a possible QBOTF. Most teams(not all) who have success these days have a Top 10 QB on a rookie contract.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (3/22/2020 7:13:23 PM)

I could go for a QB in a mid to late round, but we have too many needs with a large contract with our current quarterback. The way to save money now is to find players who will actually play on their rookie contracts.

kgdabom -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (3/22/2020 7:20:41 PM)

By Christopher Gates Mar 22, 2020, 3:28pm PDT

Another day, another member of the 2019 Minnesota Vikings moving on and signing with another team.

Numerous sources are reporting that wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, a former first-round pick of the Vikings, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. No financial terms of the deal have been released at this time.

The Vikings made Treadwell the 23rd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. After a stellar college career at Ole Miss, Treadwell struggled to get on track in Minnesota, catching just one pass in his entire rookie season and being deactivated several times. He did see an increase in playing time over the next couple of seasons, but still caught just 55 passes for 502 yards and a touchdown in those two seasons.

Minnesota elected not to pick up Treadwell’s fifth-year option on his rookie contract, and wound up waiving him as a part of their final cuts after Training Camp this past season. After some injury issues at the wide receiver position, the Vikings brought Treadwell back, and he caught nine passes for 184 yards and a touchdown in 13 games, including a 58-yard touchdown in the Vikings’ Monday Night Football loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

For his career in Minnesota, Treadwell caught 65 passes for 701 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Here’s hoping for the best for Laquon Treadwell going forward. . .except, as always, when he plays against the Vikings.

agreed, but so far we've taken backward steps to fix the middle of our o-line - we don't have a tackle problem - we can do that next year....

it's interesting that there are so many that believe that 2019 4th round and 6th round picks are going to be a big part of the answer to shoring up the o-line this year....

right now i have very little confidence that this year's o-line will be better than last year's o-line...spielman is trying to do it on the cheap - he just doesn't understand the importance, and never has....

At one time this may have been true, but our recent history of spending and drafting for the O Line no longer fits this narrative. We paid big for Reiff and Remmers. We have drafted O line help in the first second third and fourth rounds over recent drafts. Hopefully Bradbury and Samia take a big step forward this year and O'Neill continues to improve as well. Plus we have lot of good picks in this years draft that we can use on O line as well.

i'm not a football coach and i don't know how our front office and coaching staff interpret our present group of o-line players, but it seemed to me that the safest and best way to deal with our line this offseason was to:

sign a top guard to replace elflien - even a 2nd tier free agent guard would be a huge improvement

reiff - vet guard - bradbury - kline - o'neill

draft both, another guard and tackle by the end of the 3rd round

why keep elflien over kline?...okay, we now know that we save a little more money cutting kline, but it's still not worth it

if samia beats out kline, great...but we're not counting on him to be a starter - this is an unnecessary risk (same goes for udoh)

i'm still hoping that we re-sign kline

They have Samia, Collins, and Elflein currently as guards. Not the greatest but they can grab a Very Good Guard high in the draft too...

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (3/23/2020 7:28:12 AM)

Speaking of Reiff, I've come around to thinking that we should keep him. Here's how I came to that. His pay this year is 13.2 mill, but his dead money if cut is 4.4 mill. So the difference between keeping him and cutting him is 8.8 mill. A veteran offensive lineman, even average, but one who is capable of playing LT is worth 8.8 mill. However, I would move him to LG, I would move O'Neil to LT and Udoh to starting RT. I know that's a lot of moving around, but that would enable the team to focus more on CB and WR in the draft with the first two picks. I would pencil in Samia at RG, but make him compete with another draft pick in the second or third round. I would keep Harris at safety and sign a veteran CB if I possibly could with the money left over in free agency.

I also like the idea of at least having the prospect of one. However, Cousins 2021 cap hit is $41 M. In 2022, it is 'only' $10 M. So barring injury or a Rhodes-like fall, the QBOTF would be 2-3 years into his contract before seeing the field.

Yes to this. It's like last year with the OL, except we had already signed Kline and there was still a shred of hope with Elf based on various reasons/excuses.

Conversely, O'Neill now looks legit, although we was trending that way even last year. And we drafted Bradbury, who is still at least a questionmark.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (3/23/2020 8:16:30 AM)

Reiff is Reiff... the OL equivalent to Leroy Hoard in reverse.

Hoard: “Coach, if you need one yard, I’ll get you three. If you need five yards, I’ll get you three.”

Reiff: "Coach, if three pressures is the limit, I'll give up two. If one pressure is the limit, I'll give up two."

reiff - vet guard - bradbury - kline - o'neill

draft both, another guard and tackle by the end of the 3rd round

why keep elflien over kline?...okay, we now know that we save a little more money cutting kline, but it's still not worth it

if samia beats out kline, great...but we're not counting on him to be a starter - this is an unnecessary risk (same goes for udoh)

i'm still hoping that we re-sign kline

Coach or not I think your take on this was good. However as of now our FA money is tied up in Pierce who was an absolute need and Harris. If we move on from Harris in some way we could sign a guard which IMO is our biggest need followed by WR.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Bill Johanesen

Reiff is Reiff... the OL equivalent to Leroy Hoard in reverse.

Hoard: “Coach, if you need one yard, I’ll get you three. If you need five yards, I’ll get you three.”

Reiff: "Coach, if three pressures is the limit, I'll give up two. If one pressure is the limit, I'll give up two."

Never tell him the odds....
