Easy to get sucked back in, team is totally dependent on Cook, like it was about a decade ago with AP.

Not sure its sustainable or a formula that gets you to Super Bowl but it is what it is.

Vikings still need to draft a QB high in the draft this year or next.

Cook is the focal point that is for sure but I'm not sure the team is dependent on him. Mattison had great success yesterday as well. I think the whole thing hinges on having at least an average, competent offensive line. I don't think it's a coincidence that we started winning after we finally put Cleveland in at RG instead of Elflein/Samia. Sure Cleveland is a LT but it appears he's still better at RG than the other two by about a mile. The offense is severely limited (that's putting it mildly) when the defense is in the backfield so quick so often which was happening prior to Cleveland.

I think Mattison benefits sometimes from Ds being somewhat beat down when he comes into the game.

Sammy Johnson did the same after Foreman hammered defenses most of the game.

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/9/2020 1:55:55 PM)

Well, they have to win this weekend even for the pipe dream of the playoffs to be possible.

If they lose I hope they cut back on Cook's usage.

Cook is a little better as a pass receiver and as a blocker. We are can be less predictable if we need to be. Also, Mattison is a really good backup.

That’s what I was thinking.

Amazing that in AD’s prime he was constantly being taken out on passing down for guys like Chester Taylor.

Dalvin is so well rounded it’s scary. Defenses have no idea what’s coming, as even CJ Ham is versatile.

Gone are the days of tipping our hand to what’s coming.

Interesting how much Detroit kept forcing it to Adrian out of the backfield (With little results)

I believe so because he is calling other grades PFF. In the case of the run blocking, extra credit has to be given to Dalvin for being unbelievable. He gets more out of his blocking than any other RB.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/9/2020 4:11:35 PM)

Rare Zim praise for a young player:

“Irv believes now that he can really play this game and play this game at a high level,” coach Mike Zimmer said. “He’s always run good routes, he’s always caught the ball well. Probably his blocking is getting better and better.”

That's a lot of extra credit. But he probably is that much of a difference maker. He's simply been brilliant the last two weeks.

I disagree. He is having an MVP like year.

I should say that I was not one who advocated for Cook to get the contract extension. I was wrong about Rudolph, too. Also, I was happy with Barr returning. I probably would be the worst GM.

You know the words to the song?

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run

Starting to think that we will be keeping Reiff next year.

How do you dump a guy under contract who is playing like a Top 10 LT?

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/10/2020 8:23:30 AM)

I wasn't big on paying Cook.

Time after time it has been proven you will need a franchise QB to carry the team if what you want is a Super Bowl championship. That's the way the rules are set, it favors/encourages a passing attack.

Glad to have Cook but sooner or later all teams need a QB to carry their team with their arm. Lamar Jackson is a prime example. He can't pass when everybody knows they need to pass, and they lose.

He is fun to watch.

Still need to draft a QB.

I disagree with this to an extent. It doesn't take Tom Brady, Russel Wilson or Patrick Mahomes to win a super bowl. Granted, it's a lot easier, but a lot teams have won with QB's who are merely good. The key is to build a team that has enough talent and balance.

I believe you need a franchise QB to be a consistent contender.

You can catch lightning in a bottle with a good QB and have one of those "out of no where" seasons, but the teams that are in the hunt year-in and year-out always have a top QB.

Year over year, no doubt about it. A franchise QB is key to long term success. My point is that teams can succeed in a given window with someone with someone less than franchise status.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/10/2020 10:06:16 AM)

Our defense sucks this year so it doesn't matter. Even if Cousins turned in to a lights out QB all of a sudden and Cook kept it up, we'd still get housed in the playoffs.
