As I said a month ago, our o-line faces Chandler Jones, JJ Watt, Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowley, Demarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, Joey Bosa, Za'Darius Smith, Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Michael Brockers, TJ Watt, Kalil Mack, Akiem Hicks and Aaron Donald this season.

This was supposed to be the easy game.

And to think, our hopes rely on a rookie with serious injury concerns to fix our entire line (which isn't a 1 guy problem). Gonna be a wild ride.

Yeap. Terrible game. I expected a bunch of improvement based on:

D additions
O-Line couldn't possible be as bad right?
Urgency because last year sucked

1. Pierce was outstanding but that was about it. Hunter didn't even register a look until late, Breeland was burned toast and Smith was a passenger. Glad he's onboard for 20 more years.....[&o]
2. They got worse...how? No clue but they did
3. The trend continues. Zimmer doesn't have them ready to play. I don't care what the argument is. "Can't play for them, they have to execute the play...blah...blah". That many penalties on the entire team is on the coaches. They simply weren't ready. I don't know the actual "why" but it's not the first time. Inexcusable.

We could easily go 0-4 and, if so, it's time to eat Cousins contract and get rid of him and Zimmer/Spielman.

I know people will say "we were a Cook fumble from overcoming all that shit" and that's true. Would a good team be in that position and, remember, not the first (or 10th) time?

Last point, wasn't even a fumble but still, shouldn't have come to that.

Cincinnati tried as hard as they could to give the Vikings that game. They went for it on fourth down up 14 inside their own 30. They then called a TO in overtime when it was obvious the Vikings should have been calling the TO if they wanted any chance to win the game.

Two brutal teams, who combined may not win enough games to make the playoffs.

It looks like the summer amnesia in Minnesota has worn off. Game one woke the fans up after six weeks of forgetfulness.

I saw one improvement during the off-season .... the special teams.

In fact, you can make a good case that Hill was slightly better than the IOL as a whole.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 10:58:04 AM)

What we were trying to “ overcome and steal a win” from was top to bottom, poor management, coaching, and play calling, personnel choices and schemes, and just outright incompetence.

Soft zone coverage on second and third down short yardages… yea, if I’m an opposing offense, against your DB’s and LB’s?

I’ll take that all day.

I thought Breeland showed some promise in the PS..

Now it appears that was only against non starters..

Regardless, the team has no cohesion, some players played well, few played well consistently, that is on coaching.

If Davidson’s replacement, is the go to excuse for poor offensive line play, then that dude, even though he is vaccinated, needs to go.

Zimmer’s refusal to use players that are rookies, for anything but “safe” plays or preseason work, reflects on how out of touch he is with the NFL in this century.

As fans, we expect more.. it is our collective money, + TV revenue, that funds this team.

Are we getting ROI?

Nope.

And if we continue to lose, we will rarely be on a broadcast, nationally, unless some other team with playoff interest, is going to be solidifying a playoff spot by waxing “Zimmer Ball”.

If the Wilf brothers, and Investment board of directors, are happy with the direction of this team.. it’s time for them to sell..they bought low, got a showcase stadium, and feed us, the diehard fans who bleed purple and cry gold, unapologetic shite sandwiches.

I am not happy.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 10:59:29 AM)

I saw improvements in Dline, CB, Kicker, 3rd WR, 4th WR, KR, PR and Punter.

The team obviously wasn't up to game speed. Lucky we were in the game....we had 12 penalties and should of had 20 penalties plus a dropped INT by Alexander on 3rd & 6 that led to a 4th down Conversion and TD by Cincy.

The biggest fail of the day was the 4th down Cincy went for on their own side and we were a horribly called fumble away from Dalvin to win the game.

To have any chance they will need to get Darrisaw and Davis in the lineup more sooner than later and the Dline has worked very little together as there are a ton of new pieces.

Brad did Kirk play better the last two minutes of the 4th quarter for your taste?

thebigo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 11:12:19 AM)

I thought Cleveland looked horribly bad. Didn't all 5 of our starting OL have at least 1 holding call on them?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 11:13:12 AM)

Some first game jitters, possibly a "swayed" game for Cincy to cover the spread, yet the Vikes are in 1st place in the division [:D]

At this rate, Zimmer will be on the hottest hot seat by midseason. Wouldn't be surprised if he is fired.

I kept thinking about how only one coach has won a SB after having coached the team for five years.

Yup, I looked up all the Super Bowl winners a couple times to find that out.

You win early or you don't win at all.

Extending Harris and overpaying for Linebackers still drives me nuts. You win Super Bowls with Cornerbacks and Pass Rushers, you don't make up for that by overpaying other spots.

Harrison Smith hasn't been a great player for three years. That was the latest one to puzzle me. Who gives a safety a big contract extension in their 10th year?

I disagree on Harrison Smith. He is an elite safety. There was a play yesterday that I mentioned in the gameday thread. It was second or third down. Smith comes up to the LOS on the right side and literally calls out the upcoming play to the rest of the D. It was a run off tackle to the offenses right side (not Smith's side). At the snap the entire D line stunted in the direction of the play and Smith crashed down the line to stop a cutback. He does this kind of stuff all the time.

Smith is as smart of a safety as you will find. His days of being elite are well behind him though.

for my money ...

Sunday is no indication of what we have. For a lot of teams.

Laugh all you want but IMO Spielman and Zimmer will most likely get this thing bolted down and heading in the right direction ...

unfortunately. These guys are so small picture its infuriating.

I'm tired of trying to build a playoff contender from one year to the next. Its such a narrow vision for a franchise.

It makes me ill to think about 4 months of emotional investment, then possibly falling backwards into the playoffs and again getting smacked hard while Zimmer and Spielman keep their jobs ... because they did such a good job transforming the average team that they put together into a one year playoff contender.

I agree with this. Fewer preseason games, Covid precautions, lack of willingness to play starters in preseason by many teams = very bad football.

Specific to the Vikings, I can see the defense improving provided they stay healthy. Offensively, woof. I don't see it. The offensive line is way too bad.

I think the chickens are coming home to roost from several years of bad drafting. You can't have this many whiffs on 1st-3rd round draft picks. Some bad luck for sure, but if they had not hit on Jefferson, what would we have to show for the last 4 years of high picks? Brian O'Neill. That's it. If you draft a Center in the first round, he can't be a bust. Bradbury isn't just a bust, he might be the worst Center in the league.

Every NFL team faced the same obstacles as the Vikings and very few gave their starters any meaningful work in the preseason. Yet plenty of teams came out and hit the ground running yesterday. Browns, Chiefs, Cards, Rams, Steelers, Saints, Seahawks, etc. all looked like legitimate NFL teams. The Vikings looked like a train-wreck. Seems like that's got to be laid at the feet of the coaching staff.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 1:07:41 PM)

Cousins' Sunday QB rating: 106. How can we blame him for anything? A bazillion penalties in the first half, not his fault; Cook's fumble, not his fault; got us into 4th qtr and OT field goal range ...

The game was a perfect example of why he's not the answer and why some people will buy into his stats irregardless of his results.

Cousins' inability to see beyond a play design is astounding. Its no coincidence that the zenith for this regime will have come from a below average qb in 2017 that had a little spontaneous grit [that even until the end they never recognized] ... and not from our current above-avg qb that can execute their 'plan' exactly like its drawn up, winning or losing be dammed.

Cousins will do his part for sure but anything more or extra or impromptu, will have to come from someone else or nobody. Not his job, not in the diagram.

Maybe I'm just being insanely foolish ... he won't be making 45M next year from the incompletions he attempted while trying to extend drives, that money will [partly] come from the padded stats he has accrued safely dumping the ball off with no chance for extending drives.

Not disagreeing. I would say since teams have gotten more and more conservative during preseason about playing starters, the first few weeks have been more unpredictable. I don't think there's any way to simulate live game speed and intensity based on practices. So I believe quality of play in general suffers and it doesn't often hold that the best teams early in the year remain that way throughout.

It really hurts teams who lack creativity (like the Vikings) more than others. We don't use RPO or 4 wide - things like that. Those are hard to prepare for. Heaven forbid we even try to do anything creative...

I don't know what the answer is though because it sure sucks when guys get hurt during preseason, but the first few weeks of the year always seem like a bit of a s**tshow.

Yeah the only thing more annoying than Cousins is the root of all evil people are the ones who are defenders at all costs. There are weirdos online with significant followings that make stupid sarcastic strawman arguments. 'sure wish Cousins wouldn't have got all those penalties' or 'sure wish he hadn't fumbled in OT'...GTFOH - no one is saying he's solely responsible. But....

Cousins was ghastly in the 1st half yesterday. Same as always with pocket awareness. If there is a clear blitz coming, can we just see what happens with your very talented receivers in a 1:1 situation? Just chuck it up on a go route if nothing else. The reason Keenum had success was he did just that. I'm sure he got lucky a few times. But that's the damn point! Cousins sees it, pats the ball once, and turtles.

He did make some good plays in the clutch yesterday. I mean driving from your own 5 yd line to FG range in less than 2 minutes is about all you can ask for. And then ironically, when it looked we were going to win, we take the ball out of his hands and it ends up on the ground. 2nd half and OT, he did enough to win IMO.

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 1:46:40 PM)

My game thoughts nobody cares about:

1) How good is Dalvin Cook?
Good lord, he racked up yards on plays he had no business getting anything... turns the corner when it looks like he has no chance... certainly one the very few enjoyable things to watch on this offense

2) KJ Osborne looked legit.
Got open, caught the ball, broke that tackle for an impossible 3rd down conversion... good to see.

3) I think moving Hunter around is a mistake... I was nervous about it from the git go... maybe he is thinking too much but got killed in the run game at times... leave him at one spot.

4) I just don't enjoy watching a Speilman/Zimmer/Cousins offense... and maybe that is on me... they moved the ball last year... but a lot of things I just don't like about it.
Classic example yesterday:
3rd and 20.... because penalties
Kirk drops 7... has 3 receivers with routes that end less than 10 yards out... and these aren't crossers with chances to get yac.... just give up routes.
Kirk holds the ball (probably hoping for the 1 deep receiver to miraculously get open)
Bradbury escorts a DT into Kirks lap... sack
Everything about it is awful.

Maybe the OC has decided to play it safe since you are deep in opponent territory...
Hate the play design... there are "safe" plays that have way better options.
On a give up Kirk needs to just get the ball out... he and the OC seem to be completely out of sync.
Bradbury needs to at least slow down the rush.
Awful.

5) Loved the interior pass rush from Pierce... but good lord... run defense seemed terrible... that more than anything is troubling... I think the pass coverage with communication and decent pass rush has a chance to get better... hope they run defense was just communication as well

6) I've grown to really dislike Kirk for many reasons... but on review I'm not sure how much you can blame him. The pass concepts were really bad a lot of the time... with not much for outlets... slow developing routes with quick pressure. He was also off on a number of passes... but I get the feeling that this offense gameplan is not good and better execution will only make it minimally better.

7) OL talk has been beaten to death... but who could have guessed at the end of last year that the OL would not only be worse... but MUCH worse... at least to start.

8) Finally, 4 penalties in the first drive... 17 penalties overall... that is just unwatchable to me

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 1:51:30 PM)

Kirk Cousins - 83 snaps (100%) 36/49 for 351 and 2 TDs, QBR 46.7, Passer Rating 106.8 This seems like a typical Kirk Cousins game. He made some nice throws, he put up some nice stats, but it isn’t enough. Coach Zimmer mentioned at the half he thought Kirk needed to make quicker decisions and get rid of the ball faster. I agree with that take. There were a few passes to Justin Jefferson that were late and/or high. There was a pass to CJ Ham that was the same. There was a play against a full blitz where Kirk took a sack instead of making a quick decision. He actually stepped up into a zero blitz. I don’t think Kirk is the reason the Vikes lost, but he wasn’t going to be the reason they won either. PFF had him as the highest rated offensive player for Minnesota at 80.9. ESPN’s QBR stat had Kirk at a below average 46.7. That is the enigma of Cousins wrapped up in two ratings.
