Why isn't Cousins wearing a mask on the sidelines? I thought he believed in the protocols?

I should have known all this would get swept under and forgotten once the season actually started.

I'm more worried about him taking almost 3 quarters to get his head into the game.

Maybe he got his first shot? Now that would be an enigma for the Kirk haters.

Yes.

We'd all be furious at him for doing the right thing...

I'll just call it fake news and refuse to believe it.

Cousins' Sunday QB rating: 106. How can we blame him for anything?

Don't be swayed by the high completion %. His average yards-per-attempt is 18th in the league so far.

for my money ...

Sunday is no indication of what we have. For a lot of teams.

Laugh all you want but IMO Spielman and Zimmer will most likely get this thing bolted down and heading in the right direction ...

unfortunately. These guys are so small picture its infuriating.

I'm tired of trying to build a playoff contender from one year to the next. Its such a narrow vision for a franchise.

It makes me ill to think about 4 months of emotional investment, then possibly falling backwards into the playoffs and again getting smacked hard while Zimmer and Spielman keep their jobs ... because they did such a good job transforming the average team that they put together into a one year playoff contender.

I agree with this. Fewer preseason games, Covid precautions, lack of willingness to play starters in preseason by many teams = very bad football.

Specific to the Vikings, I can see the defense improving provided they stay healthy. Offensively, woof. I don't see it. The offensive line is way too bad.

I think the chickens are coming home to roost from several years of bad drafting. You can't have this many whiffs on 1st-3rd round draft picks. Some bad luck for sure, but if they had not hit on Jefferson, what would we have to show for the last 4 years of high picks? Brian O'Neill. That's it. If you draft a Center in the first round, he can't be a bust. Bradbury isn't just a bust, he might be the worst Center in the league.

Every NFL team faced the same obstacles as the Vikings and very few gave their starters any meaningful work in the preseason. Yet plenty of teams came out and hit the ground running yesterday. Browns, Chiefs, Cards, Rams, Steelers, Saints, Seahawks, etc. all looked like legitimate NFL teams. The Vikings looked like a train-wreck. Seems like that's got to be laid at the feet of the coaching staff.

There's always 16 train wrecks in the NFL after week 1. I mean shit, some teams lose like 38-3.

How did he do the last 2 mins of the game?

What was his yards per attempt in 2020?

Dalvin's fumble sealed our fate in this game.

Don't be swayed by his yards per attempt ... its just as meaningless as the completion %.

18th in the league after one game ... gzuz ... you're just trying to piss me off.

The stats don't matter if the results are bad.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 4:22:28 PM)

Out of our 11 2021 draft picks only 3 saw the field yesterday. ISM had 4 snaps on offense and 5 snaps on special teams. Chazz Surrat had 13 snaps on special teams. Wyatt Davis had 4 snaps on special teams.

We should really just trade all our draft picks ahead of the draft every year.

Cousins looked good in the last two minutes of the game yesterday. It's a shame that for the previous 58 minutes he was so indecisive that he couldn't complete a pass to a receiver unless the receiver was wide open. The constant check downs were great a great way to pad his stats, though.

As I said a month ago, our o-line faces Chandler Jones, JJ Watt, Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowley, Demarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, Joey Bosa, Za'Darius Smith, Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Michael Brockers, TJ Watt, Kalil Mack, Akiem Hicks and Aaron Donald this season.

This was supposed to be the easy game.

And to think, our hopes rely on a rookie with serious injury concerns to fix our entire line (which isn't a 1 guy problem). Gonna be a wild ride.

It looks like the summer amnesia in Minnesota has worn off. Game one woke the fans up after six weeks of forgetfulness.

I saw one improvement during the off-season .... the special teams.

Other than that huge punt by Berry in OT most of his punts were returnable and Cincy cashed in on them. berry definitely redeemed himself though with that 63 yarder.

I thought Cleveland looked horribly bad. Didn't all 5 of our starting OL have at least 1 holding call on them?

All of them except O'Neal were really bad.

He had 5 returned for a 10.6 yard average and a long of 15.

50.3 Avg, 43.6 Net Avg. Those numbers would've been 2nd and 5th best respectively for last season.

Cousins' Sunday QB rating: 106. How can we blame him for anything? A bazillion penalties in the first half, not his fault; Cook's fumble, not his fault; got us into 4th qtr and OT field goal range ...

The game was a perfect example of why he's not the answer and why some people will buy into his stats irregardless of his results.

Cousins' inability to see beyond a play design is astounding. Its no coincidence that the zenith for this regime will have come from a below average qb in 2017 that had a little spontaneous grit [that even until the end they never recognized] ... and not from our current above-avg qb that can execute their 'plan' exactly like its drawn up, winning or losing be dammed.

Cousins will do his part for sure but anything more or extra or impromptu, will have to come from someone else or nobody. Not his job, not in the diagram.

Maybe I'm just being insanely foolish ... he won't be making 45M next year from the incompletions he attempted while trying to extend drives, that money will [partly] come from the padded stats he has accrued safely dumping the ball off with no chance for extending drives.

He'll be making $45 million regardless....

He is perfect for the system and team-building philosophy of this organization, the perfect lovechild QB of Zimmer and Spielman. I've felt for a long time that you can't really blame him for being who he is. If he is your QB, you have to protect him with a croc-filled moat, your defense has to be stellar, your running game has to produce without fail, and your receivers have to separate readily, because he isn't changing. Zim and Spielman tethered their fortunes to him, and then failed (so far) to develop a team to support him. Their fault, not his. Either surround him with what it takes for him to succeed in your system, change your system, or don't bid against yourself to extend him.

Tom and beo with a couple really good posts.

I can't help but wish we were entering our second season under the direction of George Paton and Kevin Stepfanski

Also first year with Byron Leftwich as Head Coach and Justin Fields or Mac Jones as our first pick

Still have hopes for Mond but it's more of a crapshoot, imo

#Vikings offense allowed 11 pressures according to PFF:
Bradbury 4

Hill 2
Conklin, Udoh 1

Not terrible.

They also committed 14 penalties (3 declined):
Hill 3
Ham, Udoh, Osborn, Bradbury 2
Conklin, Cleveland, O'Neill 1

Very much terrible.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 7:49:55 PM)

Breshaud Breeland's Vikings debut:
5 rec on 8 targets for 107 yards, 5 first downs, and 2 TD. Plus 1 penalty.

According to PFF, the Vikings missed 14 tackles:
Breeland 5
Kendricks 3
Alexander 2
Vigil, Hunter, Smith, Griffen 1

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 8:08:05 PM)

I thought Breeland started off playing pretty good aggressive coverage.
Holy cow did the wheels fall off quickly...

Very disheartening...

We need Dantzler to figure it out or Breeland to rebound big time.

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 8:11:55 PM)

Justin Houston just SMOKED Alex Leatherwood for a sack...

2 guys I was semi interested in the off season.

Breeland and Bradbury worst graded players. Neither passed the eye test either.

Pat Pete must have been ok. Didn't hear his name which is good for a cb. But I guess Burrow was too busy picking on Breeland.

As far as Bradbury taking the next step....more like he tripped and fell coming out of the blocks.

hagar -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/13/2021 10:03:32 PM)

Football season is here. Vikings are in 1st place in the division. We didn't lose by 35. Life is good.
We practiced our false starts and holding, so, hopefully we have that perfected and are done with
that during games.[:D] Not sure how you can have 2 illegal formations in 1 game. It might be
helpful if they show players where to line up. bohumm mentioned crocs. I don't know if wearing
them would be better than cleats, but, I guess anything is worth a try.[:D]
