What was always assumed is now a lock to happen with today the deadline: I hear that the #Vikings have declined the 5th-year option on center Garrett Bradbury.

Calling Tretter....

We should have 7-8M in cap space after rookies. All but 3 rookies shouldn't count against cap because they aren't Top 51.

He is too good not to sign with anyone yet....something has to be up?

Not necessarily. I just glanced at the top 100 free agents still available and there are a lot of big names still available. Bulk of the top 100 are 30+ old.

i read that because of his knee(s), tretter only wants to play on natural turf.....

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/4/2022 7:27:33 PM)

Seriously, who's betting the over on GB (11.5) and Dallas (10.5) and the under on the Vikes (8.5)?

I swear, I'd be $100 on all three.

edit: my son thinks GB is a lock at 11.5 - pfft

If the Vikes can't cover the over, "Oh my!"

What's up with TalkVikes?

- almost posted a Mike Priefer tweet but thought, "Nah, nothing is going to wake up this bunch right now!"

It's the dead time between the draft and rookie mini-camp.

Still waiting for some improvement / evidence that we'll be better than last year.

8-9 / 9-8 doesn't promote a lot of discussion.

there is absolutely no way we can see that until they are playing meaningful games.

so take a deep breath. Enjoy the summer however you would do that and in the fall we will see if there is improvement.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/9/2022 10:58:52 AM)

All I see is a team I thought would be contenders in 2021 get a lot better.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/9/2022 11:00:40 AM)

No less than 12 wins.

Coaching alone should help here.

Plus they have done very well imho addressing their greatest needs with a limited budget.

My biggest problem right now is back up QB. We have a guy that we KNOW sucks donkey nuts and an untested 2nd year guy that very well may suck donkey nuts.

It's almost as if they added Mannion just so Cousins wouldn't feel threatened for his job.

But if Cousins can't go we could have another beyond shitty showing like we did in GB last year.

Agree 100%.

I don't care how good things are going. It falls off a cliff if Cousins is out and extended time. I hate thinking about it cause I can see the football gods doing us like that.

However, IMO if Smith and Hunter play all year I think we can count on 10 wins minimum. How much better will depend upon how quickly our rookies can step up and make some kind of impact.

Good point we are screwed if Cousins misses significant time. He never has though. Maybe that's why we haven't got ourselves a real strong backup QB by draft or FA that would cost us cap or draft capitol. Not because Cousins gives a rat's ass about who his backup is.

Not talking about incontrovertible evidence or even ocular proof.

and people don't like it when I breathe heavily, whether I'm standing or posting too closely.

and, although I plan to spend the rest of my summer sitting on air hoses,

I won't thoroughly enjoy it unless we improve C, CB, TE and backup QB ... the weak links when we started the offseason.

I think they've done a terrific job building depth with a limited budget. Improvement remains to be seen ... the people we have brought in to shore up weak positions (Smith, Booth Cine ... I don't count the others) have questions IMO. Not to mention the weak positions we didn't address (C, TE, backup QB)

The new coaching staff? IMO they have to prove themselves before I buy in. I understand the optimism ... I'm hopeful as well.

It's no done deal though.

And, it could awhile to get better. I believe we have taken a slower conservative approach ... which is fine ... but my expectations are a little lower than some (not you) who just assume because its new and not Zimmer, its a lock to be successful.

It's not so much that you breath heavily, it's more that you breath with your mouth.

In a sense we did improve/address TE, inasmuch as the new regime apparently will be utilizing that position to a lesser degree.

I assume that a healthy Irv Smith Jr. is better than Conklin,. You didn't mention improving DL play, but it should be greatly improved. A healthy Danielle Hunter is better than an injured not playing one. Zadarius Smith is better than Wonnum, I think Booth is going to be great at CB. Reed is supposed to be a better than average OL and I think he has center skills, but not quite certain about that. As for backup QB considering the track record of Cousins perhaps the Vikings are willing to roll the dice on that. Honestly there aren't enough capable backup QBs in this world for every team to have a decent one. I do get the concern though.

I doubt Zimmer even grasps how far his grip loosened on the team and the game these last few years.

I’m sure there will be a quick buy-in by the current players … we all understand that this is an opportunity for an underperforming group to play up to its potential.

A lot of people and variables to get on the same page though, and having to play other teams, many with more resources and/or in fine-tune mode.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/10/2022 4:27:05 AM)

Right now it’s a wash/unknown with the new coaching staff in terms of new scheme, buy-in, etc.

We added a few starters and hopefully good depth. But how did other teams fare? Who is going to make the leap?

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/10/2022 7:26:03 AM)

Shouldn't be hard to win 10 games merely by shoring up the scoring disparity in the last 2 mins of each half.

Not sure we did enough to improve the run defense though which could bite us in the post season. Also a bit skeptical if our IOL.
