I am curious why Bill didn't play Zappe, I thought he showed more potential

Zappe certainly could make more plays when things went off schedule. I think Mac Jones ceiling is Kirk Cousins.

SAMiller711r -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/19/2023 11:37:35 AM)

Well he's younger probably cheaper

Per numerous sources, including Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, linebackers coach Greg Manusky is leaving the staff.

Manusky, who played linebacker for the Vikings from 1991 to 1993, has been in the coaching ranks since 2001, but was only with the Vikings for one season.

With Flores in charge of the defense and wanting to build his own staff, it will be interesting to see how much turnover there is from last year.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/19/2023 3:59:11 PM)

Belichick would take Kwesi to the cleaners in a trade.

Our only assets that are at least half attractive in any trade are:

- O'Neill, although I don't know if $20 million per is too much for a RT.
- Darrisaw
- JJ
- Hock on what would be a one year rental
- First round picks

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/19/2023 4:10:36 PM)

Right now we are $23 million over and will need $6 million for the rookies and say at least $6 million for in-season stuff. $35 million over.

Trade all of those assets, stick solely with the draft, and for non-rookie salaries go with a flat salary:
- Each starter gets $7 million yearly, with the QB getting $10 million
- Each backup gets around $2 million

No more jealousy.

[:D]

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/19/2023 4:12:06 PM)

Soon, JJ and Darrisaw alone are going to get over $50 million combined. With O'Neill, make the total $70 million. Almost a third of the cap for three players, none of which are a QB or even a CB.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/19/2023 7:16:31 PM)

Add to that a pricey TE.
And what Cousins hauls in.

Fun season but it's probably gonna all come crashing down wo having paid off

hunter?...at the time, i thought that spielman overpaid o'neill with his post-rookie deal....

trade o'neill and move Cleveland to right tackle?...or just trade Cleveland as a tackle for more loot...

I'm at a point where i'd prefer any gutsy, high NFL iq quarterback to cousins...i don't even want to see the guy on the field in a vikings uniform again...draft two super athletic running qb's late in the draft and have them fight it out for the starting job...trade cousins to the 49ers for two seconds....

if i'm gm, jefferson does not get a new contract this year - we should be able to string him along for a couple more seasons on the cheap....

I don't think they can afford Cousins, even at a lesser salary.

Scratch that, they can stash cap in additional void years.

I think teams get deals with superstars done a full year out. Wouldn't want to create the proverbial "slap in the face" or have him feel "unwanted".

I'm pretty sure he was gone before KOC introduced Flores at the pc.
At least Flores turned to KOC to verify if someone on the D was gone before he answered a question.

If we extend cousins with more guaranteed money Kwesi is just a fool… and we can absolutely expect Jefferson to become Stefon Diggs and force his way out… how can we possibly pay everybody what they’re worth if we still don’t have a viable quarterback?

Depends on what the contract is and if we can put players on rookie contracts at other positions. KC made it work by having a ton of rookies on defense.

Seems weird to say that JJ would be unhappy with the QB that has been throwing him the ball over his first 3 historic seasons.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/20/2023 12:56:45 PM)

Depends if JJ just wants to make money, or wants a real shot at getting a ring.

Pretty sure JJ would be more likely to try to force his way out if Cousins is replaced with the better of "two super athletic running qb's" drafted late.

yeah, I know I'm crazy...however, if he doesn't already, Jefferson will soon see cousins for what he really is - great with stats, but a weak football player, very very weak....

heavens yes, but we really need to forgive jj for not getting yet how "weak" a football player cousins is - i mean maybe he doesn't spend enough time on social media, like talkvikes, to get the real dope

Pretty sure the state of the franchise is more important than JJs opinion.

We have to add a young prospect or two this offseason and see how they develop. And then another prospect or two next year ... and so on. Its one thing to tread water with Cousins and another to keep doing it with no plan for an upgrade (like last offseason).

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/20/2023 9:39:13 PM)

Even if we are not drafting high enough for a blue chipper (we might in 2024) ... we still have to exhaust our resources trying.

We don't have any resources to exhaust!

I mean, it sounds like you want to move up - at least somewhat - in the draft.

2024 is when you hope the top pick in the draft already has their QB of the future and you give them Jefferson for the #1 overall.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/21/2023 10:00:53 AM)

How long ago was it we had 12 picks in the draft?

What did we get with that plethora of draft picks?

Anyone a standout?

Did we combine those picks to get better position players?

I’m gonna plead Covid brain fog..

I’m not seeing this franchise do any better Han hit or miss for over a decade in scouting and picking draftable players who have developed into franchise tag material..

Kirk Cousins is the top rung on the ladder into the pit of futility..
