Even if we are not drafting high enough for a blue chipper (we might in 2024) ... we still have to exhaust our resources trying.

We don't have any resources to exhaust!

I mean, it sounds like you want to move up - at least somewhat - in the draft.

Not really. IMO Kwesi and our scouting dept have to show they learned something from last year and can identify quality better before they start throwing what limited picks we have to move up.

I just have sense at QB of fishing around and trying to get lucky in the draft. Until we do have the position or resources to draft someone high.

I liked the Mond pick in the third rd ... it didn't work out. Most won't. You still have to try.

I don't know if it's quality as much as not needing to zero in on certain metrics and the payoff "if".

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/21/2023 7:50:06 PM)

Saw this:

QB situations in the NFL:
1) Having Patrick Mahomes
2) Having a guy on a rookie contract that can go toe-to-toe with 15
3) Having a guy on an expensive deal that can go toe-to-toe with 15
4) Having a rookie you drafted and are developing
5) Overpaying for average

Get out of 5.

Fast.

Daniel Jones is worth about $20 million.

Mahomes should be the highest paid.
Burrow next

After that the drop-off in salary should be a bunch.

Giants are committing franchise suicide if the give Jones anywhere near $40 million. They should take a long look at Arizona and Denver.

2024 is when you hope the top pick in the draft already has their QB of the future and you give them Jefferson for the #1 overall.

Begs the question why is a team that already has it's QBOTF still the worst team in the league?

And/or Minnesota if we are dumb enough to extend Kurt

I agree. anayltics seems to be all the rage but teams sure seem to ignore it when it comes to overpaying for QB, LB, Safties, and RB. (I would never ever pay big money for LB, Safety, or RB). If a QB isn't winning big on the rookie deal they sure as hell are not going to win big when they command a big percentage of the salary cap.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 10:13:51 AM)

edit: When Cousins signed his original deal I wouldn't call it suicide but it wasn't great, either

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 10:36:35 AM)

"wasn't great", LMAO. We (as in the team and fans that put the team above love for a player) were had.

https://www.nfl.com/news/inside-kirk-cousins-historic-contract-with-minnesota-vikings-0ap3000000921414

When Kirk Cousins agreed to terms to become the Minnesota Vikings' new quarterback, he did more than simply conclude the biggest storyline in free agency. He also put his name on a record-setting, paradigm-shifting, tradition-exploding contract. Cousins signed a three-year, $84 million deal that is fully guaranteed, sources say. It not only makes him the highest paid player in football history, but he's also the first quarterback to sign a multi-year, fully guaranteed deal.

Consider the fact that before he signed his first franchise tag, Cousins made a contract counteroffer to the Redskins that was a three-year, $58.5 million offer that was fully guaranteed. They quickly turned it down.

Like Cousins. Zero playoff wins in his rookie deal. One playoff win since, including three 100% guaranteed contracts.

He Threw Short has one playoff win in eleven years.

Re Jones, good. Let them fight it out. Franchise him, which often leads to various problems.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 10:50:57 AM)

I heard a stat about Jones yesterday that was LOL. Paraphrasing but he had 3 games with over 230 yards passing. 1 was against a really shitty pass defense and the other 2 were against Minnesota [&:][:-][:o]

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 11:21:47 AM)

Regular season Jones threw 15 TD passes. You would have to be insane to give him anything remotely close to big money.

i was shocked when i heard that we let tomlinson's contract expire monday...and then this today....

Field Yates@FieldYates
Vikings DT Dalvin Tomlinson’s deal was set to void in recent days, which would have pushed $7.5M of dead money onto their 2023 cap. The team & Tomlinson agreed to move the void date to 3/15. This buys more time for a possible extension that avoids all $7.5M hitting the 2023 cap.

patrick peterson's contract was allowed to void...he'll most likely be moving on....

A $7.5 million band-aid that needs to be ripped off.

Begs the question why is a team that already has it's QBOTF still the worst team in the league?

Ask Chicago. What are the odds of all the conditions being right for another team like Chicago having the 1st pick in next year's draft ?

Jeff Allen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 2:21:44 PM)

You don't try with third round picks at QB. It doesn't work. You are just wasting the pick. If you want a QB you have to go and get him. Instead of taking Mond, Vikings should have gone after Justin Fields. He was right there.

Jeff Allen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 2:26:18 PM)

Vikings need to blow up this team. Trade everyone they can for picks. The window is closed.

Keep Jefferson, Hockenson, Darrisaw, O'Neal, and a few young defensive players. Get rid of everyone else who is either old or overpaid including Cousins. If they can deal him, deal him. I'd love Trey Lance here. If he's bad we finish 5-12 and draft a QB next year. When was the last time the Vikings were in rebuild mode???

They are almost to that point by delaying and keeping the older diminishing talent. There isn't a reason to tear it down to the studs in the Not For Long league....there is the fear of becoming the Texans or the like; always rebuilding.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/22/2023 2:46:16 PM)

I didnt mean to imply before that we cpuld find a franchise qb with third rd picks. you use whatever means you have at your disposal.

But you dont ignore taking chances … just because you cant load up this year and get inside the first 5-10 picks.

Edit: the chances arent good if its not a blue chipper … even then, the chances are just ok. But you are also trying to find backups and projects that end up being backups. I really think we should be drafting qbs up the ying yang right now.

How high could a Hunter, Cleveland and own first get you? I have my doubts that we could get higher than 8-10. Maybe throw in next years 2nd?

the vikes are going for the gold again next season...you can hate it, but get used to it....

we should be hoping that when we do extend cousins next month, we don't give him any more guaranteed money....

we won't win 13 games next season, but we will be a better team...cousins is our ceiling....
