In 2017, the Chiefs traded their #27, their 3rd rounder - 91st overall, and their 2018 first round pick to move to #10 and drafted Patrick Mahomes. KC did this even though they had a decent starting QB in Alex Smith who had thrown for 76 TDs and 28 INTs over the prior four seasons with KC. KC went 43-21 during those four years. In 2017, Alex Smith threw for 4042 yards, 26 TDs and 5 INTs. The team went 10-6 but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Alex Smith finished 1-4 in the playoffs for KC. KC had no problem trading Smith to Washington and going with Mahomes.

This is how you go from good to great. Yes for every Mahomes at #10 you'll get a few Blaine Gabberts and Matt Leinerts. But you have to try and you have to be willing to part ways with an Alex Smith. Sure we might not land a Mahomes but we are positively guaranteed to have our Alex Smith otherwise.

Good read on the parallels between Smith and Cousins, although Cousins' upside probably IS Alex Smith. But more importantly, highlighting the situation KC was in with Smith and what they did even though Mahomes was at the time kind of a quirky projection.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2023 4:44:48 PM)

One can create a percentage of first round QBs who have won playoff games. In a similar vain, with Cousins winning just one over 11 years, the odds are in a given year he has a 9% of winning a single playoff game. To string two wins together? Less than 1%.

I fully expect Cousins to be here for at least the next 2 years. He likes it here. Started a family here. Wants to retire a Viking. He's respected by the team and probably a good portion of coaches and the Wilfs.

If we find a guy at some point that is to supplant Cousins I wouldn't be surprised to see Kirk simply retire.

For me to extend him he needs to take a pay cut. Lower the base and add some incentives. If he wins the Super Bowl he gets a 10 Million bonus or something like that.

My first choice is to trade him, and everyone else that's old and expensive, and bottom out with the eye to spring back strong in 2024 & 2025. Again, that requires his approval.

My second choice is to just ride out this year with him and dismantle and rebuild the D. This likely gets us another 9-11 win team with a first round playoff loss if we make it at all. This outcome doesn't help the rebuild because we're probably picking in the 15-25 range again.

Third choice is a lower cost extension to try and improve the team around him. He's still not likely to be the guy to start thriving when the lights are brightest, which is what you need to win it all.

We have a long way to go to become elite. Keeping KC around just slows down the process to getting there. I think he'll only ever be above average.

If I were the GM; the only way I extend Cousins is as a back up with back up pay, period.

Otherwise I look at every season we have Cousins as a starter as just a very long preseason until the year, if he is finally replaced.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2023 6:34:32 PM)

Reducing his salary and tying it to incentives has appeared the more attractive choice with keeping him for me for the last while.

Ah, I see. But more attractive based on what you want or what you think they will do?

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2023 8:55:08 PM)

We'll see what happens but Cousins and his agent have been contractually ruthless since he became a starter in WA. No reason to think that, even by looping his last pass in the background during negotiations, he will budge from another guaranteed extension year or two at a premium rate.

My one hope is Kwesi will be unwilling to commit to a multi-year deal and even the one-year extension gets put on hold until later.

If we start the league year with no Cousins extension, Kwesi will have raised his bar considerably IMO.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/23/2023 9:49:39 PM)

Kirk has around $12 million in void year money for 2024 and 2025. Much like the question with Tomlinson and his $7.5 million for this year - is a new contract offset by that? I know the money has been paid to the player already so my guess is probably no. Also tne player would be dumb to not expect new money with a new deal.

Cut now: $48.75 million cap hit to 2023
Cut in one year (automatic if no new deal): $36.25 million cap hit to 2023; $12.5 million cap hit to 2024
New deal this year: $48.75 million + new deal money spread out between 2023, 2024, etc.
New deal next year: $12.5 million + new deal money spread out between 2024, 2025, etc.

My Deal: Cut now, pay the cap hit and still feel better as a fan about my chances of ever winning a title. Kirk Cousins is never winning a championship for the Vikings, PERIOD!. The longer this fantasy is prolonged, the closer I get to post mortem.

I want to write a new song. "It aint my money, so I don't give a damned." Sounds like something I could sell to a country star.

Anyone notice how Rick Spielman no longer has a job? Nobody picked up his ass. Why? Because he was a moron. Spielman was a bad hire and trashed this franchise for the foreseeable future. The quicker we move past his mistakes, the better.

Kwesi's first major move as GM was to sign Cousins to a fully guaranteed contract extension.

That was extremely careless. Strike one.

Shouldn't it be strike 3? -- K

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/24/2023 9:23:16 AM)

How many strikes did Spielman get? His first was paying Jared Allen, then AP....there are so many he paid late in their careers.

If Kwesi gives Jefferson a monster deal after his third year, remember Darrisawโ€™s comes due next year. Starts to defeat the purpose of making great pics when you have to start paying them two years early.

Depends how they work the extension.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/24/2023 10:05:42 AM)

What the Vikings have drafted in the last 15 years in Rounds 1 and 2 of the draft:

๐Ÿˆ 10 DBs
๐Ÿˆ 7 OL
๐Ÿˆ 4 WRs
๐Ÿˆ 2 RBs
๐Ÿˆ 2 QBs
๐Ÿˆ 2 LBs

.
If youโ€™re going to give them a break, and do it early, do it after the fourth year, and before the fifth year option, then you can start saving yourself capโ€ฆwhatever brilliant kick the can down the road back-loaded deal redesigned; itโ€™s still gonna cost us more in 2023 then weโ€™re paying right now. Do it next year.

PFF described the Top 101 as its top-graded players regardless of position and did not weigh the ranking by position importance. These are the Vikings performers who made the cut:

8. Justin Jefferson (WR)
26. Christian Darrisaw (LT)
51. Zaโ€™Darius Smith (OLB)
55. Danielle Hunter (OLB)
68. Brian Oโ€™Neill (RT)
78. Patrick Peterson (CB)
97. Kirk Cousins (QB)
