They were hoping to resign Dalvin T and recoup some of that dead cap...not sure what their plan is for Kirk or Hunter.

Kwesi appears to be building a foundation now that allows the team to make a serious run in 2024. If his approach to FA continues, a version of the following seems very likely (thanks Spotrac):

2023
- In addition to existing cuts, get rid of Harrison Smith, Dalvin Cook, and Zadarius Smith.
- Extend Hunter ($19m year), Hockenson ($14m year), Jefferson ($32m year)

2024
- The team will be $106m under the cap.

Cousins will affect that number if he's around in 2024, and the team will sign a couple of FA's this year that will affect that number, but that's still a lot of money to spend on free agents in 2024 with little to no dead money on the books.

Cleaning up the books was going to take a couple years.

Me likey.

The hell we are in this year will not be our hell in the future.

It's 106M with only 26 guys signed. Have to count 51.

Still in good shape though.

And no one on the 51 man roster will have an absurd contract like the kind Spielman has hamstrung the team with.

You have absolutely no way of knowing that.

That's not even best case scenario.

That's putting down a bet with monopoly money on what a game of monopoly will look like two years from now.

Kirk has a $20m roster bonus due Sunday. If the Vikings convert that to signing bonus & add max void years. the team will generate $16m in cap savings

A simple restructure with the remaining 2 void years creates $13m. The more $ converted, the more likely Kirk stays past 2023

The Vikings are restructuring quarterback Kirk Cousins' contract

The Minnesota Vikings are looking at more ways to get under the salary ca and they have gone to their quarterback to do so. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Vikings have restructured quarterback Kirk Cousins’ contract to create cap space.

Cousins is entering the final year of his contract with a base salary of $10 million along with a roster bonus of $20 million with $15 million paid out this week.

The maximum amount of cap space that the Vikings can create is a shade under $20 million, as Cousins currently has two void years on his contract. Those years each have $6.25 million on the books that the Vikings will have to pay out in due time.

This is also a signal that contract extension talks have died because an extension would have been able to shrink the cap hit.

How this got done will send multiple signals, and, even though it’s a little bit out there, it could end up helping to facilitate a trade this year.

Report: Vikings converting Kirk Cousins contract, creating cap space
The move is designed to convert part of his base salary into a signing bonus, which then reduces his cap hit.

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly made a move involving Kirk Cousins, with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport saying they have working a "cap conversation" to Cousins' contract that will create additional cap space for 2023.

A cap conversation simply the moving around of money, converting part of his base salary into a bonus. It's unclear how much cap space the move will free up, but Minnesota was an estimated $9.9 million over the cap (per OverTheCap) and needs to be cap compliant before the NFL's new league year begins Wednesday.

What exactly does the cap conversion for Cousins mean? Matthew Coller explains...

"In the Vikings’ current cap situation they didn’t have many other buttons to push in order to create enough cap space to fill out their roster in free agency and sign their next draft class. The only other choice would have been signing Cousins to an extension to lower his cap hit but all signs are pointing to an impasse. It’s still possible they could extend him but they needed to get cap compliant today so they had to do something," Coller told Bring Me The Sports.

Cousins carries a $36.25 million cap hit in 2023. His base salary is $10 million, though it's unclear how much of that base salary will be converted.

It's also another potential indication that Minnesota is not going to give Cousins a contract extension, meaning he could be playing out the final year of his deal with Minnesota without any future guarantees.

Another possibility would be Minnesota lowering his cap hit to make him easier to trade, according to Purple Insider's Matthew Coller, who noted in a text message that such a scenario is "less likely."

This is a developing story.

Would reduce Kirk's cap hit from $36.25M to around $20M. Smart use of already in place void years from last extension.

Yes, because he already has the 2 void years, so the team can shift the money without his permission.

He still gets every dollar, it just changes how it affects the cap for us.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 12:32:56 PM)

Found this. Seems right:

quote:

If this is true then they took his entire 20M roster bonus and converted it plus 4M of his salary.

His cap hit would be 20.25M in 2023, 14.25M in 2024 and 14.25M in 2025.

2024 and 2025 are dead money years so if he leaves he would have a 28.5M dead money cap hit in 2024 for NOT being on the team.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 12:34:02 PM)

And just like that 2024 isn't so clean anymore...

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 12:39:06 PM)

My ultimate wish for the very near future is we trade Cousins and receive enough in return to draft one of the top QBs in this draft or enough to allow us to get Caleb Williams in 2024. If we could somehow get a 2024 1st or... ah F it I'm tired of speculating. I'm also mentally preparing to hear about a Kirk extension so we can run back our 'just better than average' shit we've been watching since 2018. So Fing BORING. BORING!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2023 12:39:19 PM)

Kevin Seifert

@SeifertESPN
My understanding of the salary cap adjustment the Vikings have made for Kirk Cousins: It reduces his salary cap number by $16mm for 2023, making the Vikings cap compliant before Wednesday's deadline, but IS NOT an extension that would bind Cousins to the team

This team pays “ dead money,” just like every other team that unloads overpriced contracts this way.. rudolf and Favrey come to mind.. others as well..

The fact that we ARE NOT EXTENDING CHECKDOWN CHARLIE, is a happy day for me..

FKFC.

So this should make him much more tradable - especially if we wait until after 3/23 where he's owed a 15M roster bonus.

If we trade him after paying his bonus, his new team is only on the hook for ~6M this year. And if he's traded, we'll get hit with the full 28.5M dead cap next year.
