For a NextGen type example where you are looking at top speed, at a steady 20 mph a player covers 40 yards in 4.09 sec.

20 miles in 60 minutes, or
35,200 yards in 3,600 seconds
Divide each by 880
40 yards in 4.09 seconds

It might be GPS based, but essentially times are from the peak/max part of the run. Even if it is calculated for just their best split second or fastest 2-3 strides, at say 22 mph that's 3.75 seconds over 40 yards. Like Richard said, there is no acceleration/buildup so any extrapolated 40 times are of course faster and look weird. Apples to oranges.

So when Denny says that is a 4.15 time, there is no definitive top speed figure.

According to GNU units:

40 yards / 4.15 s = 19.715225 miles/hour

So you would need to average just under 20 miles per hour. Given you are starting at a dead stop, you would probably need to top out at around 23–24 miles per hour at the finish line to make 4.15 seconds.

Yeah, 23-24 is the estimated part that has no answer. Seems reasonable.

What does a 4.15 forty time mean for mph, what does it translate to ?

Saw that converter this morning and dismissed it. Also, the author added: Consider that during the forty yard dash there is an acceleration period so a person will not be running a constant speed, also it is not a sustainable pace to run for an entire mile. Therefore this is a largely theoretical calculation for the interest of comparison.

That makes sense. I obviously didn't read anything about it and trusted it like converting miles to K.

I did however wonder at the different speeds while watching Moss' 3 touchdowns v. Dallas. On the last one it looked obvious he reached pretty close to max speed once there was an opening but the others maybe he didn't need it so much from what we saw.

The mph of these guys is a nice added interest to the game.

Yeah, with that midway hitch so to speak on the third TD, I've wondered if he ever got to his max speed. It kinda seemed he did as you say after the opening because he was already running then just turned it on. That has always stood out in my mind as incredible.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 7:15:15 PM)

Freakin Pat Summerall was a Cowboys favorite going back years, so he having to announce Moss' touchdowns was torture!

On a lesser scale, Darryl Johnston as second went through the motions on the Philly TDs last week. Easy to hear in his voice. Clown. Always loved Curt Gowdy announcing the AFC games.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 7:53:07 PM)

Is it true that the last the Vikings won in Miami in the regular season, the Vikings went to the Super Bowl that season ?

OMG YESSS!

IMNSHFO you should cool the SB talk, whether it be based on 5-1 per your earlier post or your whacked alternative world.

Among a group of league fans, such nonsense would be embarrassing. You are overcompensating for GB's demise - AND IT IS A DEMISE, or maybe you are just a frontrunner.

Then again, who am I... feel free to run with it [:-]

I had to mute him the second time I watched it ...

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/18/2022 8:19:04 PM)

A real Vikings fan has no reason to even mumble or burp the name of the term of the NFL championship given their history of defeats not only in said games but also more recent Conference championships. To do so deserves utter contempt.

Wonder if they could time Moss on his third TD against Dallas on Thanksgiving 98?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MceSzVPi_4

.
xavier rhodes had a pick 6 several years back, where he was clocked at around 25mph....

I'm going to need a link for that.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/01/28/tyreek-hill-fastest-player-in-nfl/

"In the 2016 season, (Tyreek) Hill notched the fastest speed NGS has recorded for a ballcarrier when he hit 23.24 mph on a kickoff return. San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 this season, posted the second-best speed of 23.09 in 2020, and Hill also holds the third spot with a time of 22.77 mph in another 2016 game."

The 25 mph was Rhodes hand speed reaching for his hammy

Seriously Bill, your comments couldn't get any stupider.

Seek professional help, you must feel really bad about yourself.

Ouch, stats to back up some uneasy feelings:

@DustBaker

Most 10+ Yard Plays Allowed,
on Defense,
thru Week 6:

Vikings (93)
Falcons (90)
Cardinals (89)
Lions (88)
Steelers (86)
Texans (84)
Browns (83)
Ravens (82)

It's not good, but how many of them were TD's?

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/19/2022 8:39:04 AM)

Rumors are the Vikings are looking at a TE......rumored are Dissly, Fant, or Tremble.
Other rumblings
S Abrahams from Raiders.
Article also mentions WR Mims Jets and Claypool Steelers; I just don't see trading picks for these two.

The continuing OBJ rumors also.

Bear's squad is making a few changes in light of the lousy start, waiving former Vikings wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette on Tuesday.

at this moment, the vikings have one opening available on the 53-man roster, and one on the 16-man practice squad....

I would guess there are Saints fans that used to say they should not talk of a SB.

Leave the past in the past and look forward figure out what we need to do to win a SB.

True, good perspective.

Based on having only 7 pure away games out of 17 and the poor play in Philly, I believe this team needs home field more than most teams do. For that to apply (in a generic playoff conversation), they are likely going to have to win on the road. Buffalo is a power so IMO that won't be a huge key/barometer, but @GB and @Chi to close the season will be. And @Det is the typical trip-up game. Is it safe to overlook @Wash? Weirdly, they need to take care of business outside of their comfort zone in order to get back into it if they end up in the playoffs.

Trying to say the home/away piece of the schedule might be a double edged sword.

And there are still many home games... Cowboys, Patriots, Giants, the aforementioned Cardinals, the potentially improved Jets, etc. With the team's weaknesses, I don't assume ANY wins at home beyond an off the cuff yes/no type of thing.

The weaknesses like pass D and IOL are obvious and discussed week to week.
