Vikings ‘In No Major Rush’ to Extend Justin Jefferson’s Contract...vikingsterritory

"While it might be essential to secure Jefferson’s service, the franchise is reportedly in no rush to get a deal done, according to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN, who talked about the situation on SportsCenter on Sunday."

move cleveland to swing tackle/guard - sign a real guard....

This morning KSTP 5 reported that Viking right tackle Oli Udoh has been driving like a bat outta hell recently, and has the citations to prove it.

Udoh was cited 3 times in the month of May, once for reckless driving and another two times for speeding.

Between May 4th and May 7th Udoh was cited twice in 3 days, the first for going 97 in a 55 on Highway 61 in St. Paul. The second citation was the result of reports of Udoh swerving in and out of the carpool lane, without a passenger, at high speed on I-35E which resulted in a charge of reckless driving.

It seems like Udoh got his act together and was starting to put two and two together as the next time he was cited was 20 days later. This time it was for a seemingly more minor offense of going 9 over the posted 55 mph limit, although the vehicle was noted for going from the on ramp to the far left lane.

Not at all. The avg vikings fan is bubbly, cheerful, even blissfully jubilant when compared to others buzzing through a wood chipper.

I did very well betting on the Vikings last season and very poorly betting on the Wolves. All in all I won $1000 something. I think I will be on us winning the division again.

i love hunter, but i'm starting to think that trading him and signing both of these guys to one-year deals is the intelligent move....

It's an interesting idea, but definitely concerning. By most accounts, what happens with Hunter kind of sets the tone for the season. If I were KAM, I'd be nervous unloading a proven player of Hunter's caliber, especially because he plays on a defense full of question marks. KAM's picks have to produce and produce quickly, and that's with Hunter in the mix. Moving on from Hunter is one thing, but how are we getting the QBOTF, two new legitimate pass rushers, possibly a guard or two, DL depth, etc. in the next year or two? The offense, overall, is looking good. But, beyond that? There are a lot of question marks that need answers. I'd like to see KAM's picks actually produce before I trust him to turn the picks from a Hunter trade into something worth celebrating.

hunter had his heyday in a 4-3 defense four years ago...there are good short-term players available for relatively cheap...we've got to pay jefferson, hockenson, darisaw, and dare I say, cousins - all in the near future....

hunter was amazing and i'm a big fan, but he's a disgruntled 4-3 guy, looking for financial security and he's 29 years old....

You think we're going to extend Cousins? Most think this is his last year. Personally, I'd prefer to keep him for a few more years, but it really seems the hope is to find the QBOTF. Knowing that, why would Cousins stay for another year? He wants to finish his career here. But if he can't, I'm sure he'll be looking for a commitment of three or four years from another team. There's no reason for him to do the year-to-year thing with us. So, I guess I look at it differently. Yes, we have to pay JJ, Hock, and Darrisaw, but who else? Everyone else is young, unproven, or somewhat proven to be "meh." There should absolutely be money to pay Hunter. I get his age and injury concerns, but you could also view that as him having a couple years less on his body as far as wear and tear. Also, yeah, he's cheap this year and of course wants an extension. But with him missing so much time, he's made some decent money overall. There are two sides to this. I would imagine, with taking everything into consideration, (age, injury history, money made when he was injured, etc.), the contract shouldn't be outrageous. He hasn't been done dirty or anything. I'm not sure he's disgruntled as much as he just wants more of a commitment and fair pay moving forward. But if he's demanding top money, then it's time to take a look at a trade. But for the reasons I previously mentioned, I don't think that's ideal. He's still really, really good. And there's no reason to believe he can't still be good for a few more years, especially with Flores. Speaking of Flores, he's great, but he also needs good players! Losing Z and Tomlinson sucked. Losing Hunter on top of it? Yikes! Big yikes!

hunter has always been one of my favorites and a hell of a pick by spielman...he hasn't been a top-tier player since 2019, and he's been through some injuries....

if cousins doesn't bring us to the brink of a super bowl this year, at 28 years old (29 in oct), hunter is a player that very probably won't be around for the next push 3+ years from now - with our QBOTF, hopefully....

cousins 2024 contract is going to depend on cousins 2023 play - I think that if the vikings decide to bring him back, they'll work out a deal - cousins wants to stay in Minneapolis...if we get to the NFC championship game this season, I think he's coming back....

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/29/2023 2:55:19 PM)

.
i think that the vikings should wait and see where we are going into the 2024 season before considering a big contract with Jefferson or hockenson - maybe let justin play out his 5th-year option, and franchise tag hockenson in 2024...if we've got our quarterback of the future, then sign them long term...if not, consider trading them for a rebuild....

Great post. Hunter should be good and possibly great. Hopefully we can get him for the price of good. I'd love to have Kirk back. He's out best chance to win it all.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/29/2023 8:25:51 PM)

If Cousins continues to demand guaranteed contracts it will be one year deals. No team will be giving a guy his age a 3-4 year fully guaranteed contract.

He was 10th overall in pressures last season. Very high PFF grade too. Considering he had a bit of a transition year switching to the 3-4 and still very good against the run. Maybe not elite but he's right there.

NTC is a real bad idea. Limits who you can deal with. Generally I don't think you see too many of them in their first big deal that I know of.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/30/2023 10:30:58 PM)

I think it's a poor time to trade Hunter.

Hunter will likely play better in a more aggressive system, everyone on defense may have been skewed down because of the passive system of Donatell.

Next off season will be the best time to trade Hunter.

I doubt Cousins would demand a guaranteed contract at this point in his career. But more than a one-year commitment? I believe he's earned that (consistency, leadership, ability to stay healthy, etc.), and a few teams would be happy to have him.

As far as Minnesota, here is this:

The future of the Vikings: Latest on Danielle Hunter, Justin Jefferson and Kirk Cousins by Alec Lewis

quote:

Lewis: I will say, on a serious note, it’s only a matter of time. Every member of the Vikings organization has talked openly about wanting to make this happen. Furthermore, Jefferson has accomplished more statistically through three seasons than any wide receiver in the history of football. So for as rare as it may be for wide receivers to receive extensions immediately following their third year, he is deserving of one.

Krawczynski: I will say this about the Vikings under the Wilf regime: When they want to keep a player, they keep a player. And there is no doubt they want to keep Jefferson, so I have no reason to doubt that the two sides will figure something out eventually. I really do believe that Jefferson has a chance to surpass some of the biggest stars this team has ever had. He has a mass appeal that may be just behind Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady and the few NFL players who are truly recognizable to the casual fan. Fun to watch.

Lewis: I think back to something Adofo-Mensah said at the combine. He essentially admitted then that Jefferson’s status warrants the type of communication often afforded to the starting quarterback. Adofo-Mensah said it was his responsibility to keep Jefferson abreast of the team’s long-term plans.

That’s where I find myself returning to the QB position. Maybe one of the most under-the-radar storylines in the NFL this offseason is the fact that Kirk Cousins is destined to become a free agent after this season. That has league-wide ramifications, but it also raises all sorts of questions locally.

I’ll toss a couple out here. If Cousins plays well this season, how difficult will it be to retain him on the open market? If the Vikings move on from Cousins, how capable is Jaren Hall going to be as a potential successor? If not him, then who? Will the team try to move up in the draft? Will they be in a position to make that happen?

Jon, how do you feel about (waves arms wildly) all of this?

Krawczynski: I think Kirk Cousins really wants to finish his career here. I think he likes the organization, loves throwing to Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson and, as weird as it sounds for a QB who has been so polarizing in these parts, he just seems to feel comfortable here.

If you put truth serum in his protein shake, I think he would say he is disappointed the Vikings haven’t been more aggressive in signing him to an extension. He has played the contract game as well as any NFL player has ever played it, but I think if he could sign a long-term extension here that he liked, he would do it in a minute.

For the Vikings, it seems like they’re playing this a bit like the Giants did with Daniel Jones. Let him go into the final year of his deal. If he plays really well, you reward him with a huge contract. Could you lose him to another team? Yes. But would you? I think if he gets what he wants, Minnesota is his preferred destination.

If he doesn’t, you can turn to the future and every Vikings fan will serenade you for it. I would be surprised — but not shocked — if Jaren Hall is that future. You write about him like I write about Ricky Rubio (wait, no one writes about anything like I write about Ricky), and I look forward to seeing him in the preseason. The talent intrigues me, but there’s a reason he was a fifth-round pick.

The guess here is if they bottom out because of injuries or stagnation this fall, they will be picking a lot higher in the draft and maybe have a shot at a QB of their own.

Lewis: You laid it out well. Cousins does love it here. Hall will be fun to follow. And, a major step back could lead to a draft pick that suffices for a high-end quarterback.

I will say, though: I am a bit hung up on the Daniel Jones reference. Not that I think it’s wrong. I just think the metrics shine a more positive light on Cousins. In the last five years, his overall efficiency score, via RDSDM, ranks 10th among 22 qualified quarterbacks, which is better than Matthew Stafford, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray and Derek Carr over that span. Statistically, Cousins and Jones do not even compare.

Age, of course, is a variable in the long-term calculus. The Vikings will also factor in what another hefty quarterback contract would prohibit them from doing with their overall roster. So … this next calendar year feels monumental in terms of the long-term outlook of the team.

Haskins dominated the middle of the first bout until the late rounds when they ran out of gas. But in the rematch Green attacked with a frenzy in a multitude of ways. Who secured the overall victory in the mammoth two bout contest?

According to the police report, Haskins allegedly strangled his girlfriend, Makiah Green, on June 22 during a disagreement that stemmed from when he saw that she "liked" another man's Instagram photo. The two got into an argument, resulting in Green allegedly throwing Haskins' shoes on the floor. Haskins allegedly told her to stop, and when Green didn't, he pushed her to the ground, then tossed her on a bed, where he used both hands to strangle her. The fight continued with the two allegedly slapping each other.

A second alleged incident occurred Thursday when the two were at dinner. Haskins allegedly left Green at the restaurant, and she had to take an Uber back to their house. Green saw Haskins in the house when she returned. She allegedly threw a glass at him and took refuge in their bedroom. Haskins allegedly kicked the door down, an argument ensued and Green allegedly ripped a $5,000 chain off his neck.

Haskins allegedly shattered Green's phone. Green allegedly then grabbed Haskins' phone, saw Snapchat notifications with photos of naked women in chats, shattered Haskins' phone and assaulted him.

Haskins, in a statement provided to police, said Green attacked him with a broom and choked him from behind. He alleged she also threw his PlayStation 5, putting a hole in the wall, and furnished a video to support his statement.

Green was also jailed and charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and felony vandalism. She posted $7,500 bond and was released.

If Cousins continues to demand guaranteed contracts it will be one year deals. No team will be giving a guy his age a 3-4 year fully guaranteed contract.
