And even though I've slammed Kwesi, why should he likely commit a fair chunk of cap to some guy nobody else has signed? What would you sign him for?

Right.

With the dearth of decent O-Linement league-wide, if this guy was any kind of "cure-all", why has no other team even brought him in for a visit?

We don't need a cure-all.

All we need is an IOL or two or three that aren't backward projectiles when the ball is snapped.

Is he willing to be paid like that?

why has no other team shown any interest in him?

And if Cousins stormed into Kwesi's office demanding an "at least average" guard ..., I hope Kwesi would ask just what in the hell besides brain-wave therapy have you done to increase your mobility.

A more likely scenario ...

EDIT: I didnt articulate that right.

I dont know what Risner is asking for or what we are willing to offer. I wasn’t pointing to him specifically when I said 1-2-3 non-projectile iol.

It is weirdly mysterious that a G is pricing himself out of the market in August. I’m mot sure thats the whole story … it might be I dont know.

I just wish we knew something so I could move on to the next impossible FA yearning.

@TomPelissero says Cook is signing a 1 year deal with the NYJ

- good for him

Krammer: •Cook's Jets money lets Vikings off the hook for $2 million gtee

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2023 5:58:58 AM)

Kwesi should consider poaching OL scouts from better G drafting organizations such as Philly or Balt.
We haven't drafted a difference making G in 35 years.

Have other organizations had this much trouble as well? I know most good college olineman play T but there has to be some good G's to be had.

Pauldiercks1 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2023 7:56:39 AM)

If anyone was pushing for Trey Lance in the last year and a half they simply do not understand how to win in the NFL or they let emotions dictate their decisions.

Try putting forth a solid argument in an nfl chat forum before telling everybody ‘how to win in the nfl’.

Has Lance been a unknown quantity for the last year and a half? Ofcourse. He won the starting job last year over JG and Purdy before getting injured. He looked really lousy in their first preseason this year. Still an unknown, although the 49ers seemed to have swapped Purdy to the QBOTF and Lance to the project.

I think anyone ‘pushing for Lance’ has simply been pushing for young QB alternatives. Mond and Hall aint it.

There is now a single “to the 53” cut day, August 29th, 2023.

Teams are going to start releasing players, by the end of this week..

The ones they may wish to resign to PS or that 1-2 open slot they have on August 30th will be released last, with hopes that they sneak through waivers..

The “ dearth” of. Available offensive linemen.. is about to end..

I don’t know if we have the cap money for some serious upgrades…

Thanks KFC and HS, and other overpaid has-beens..

But some teams are going to be cutting guys they don’t like for scheme or underperforming at the NFL level, given the money they make.. or guys who are just not NFL caliber draft picks in a coaches mind…

Either Risners price will drop, or he will take a 1 year “prove yourself “ deal… somewhere…

Multiple teams are trying to create NFL competitive and competent OL groups to protect Hgh dollar investment in QB’s and RB’s.

Good to great OL performance is in no way “ the sexy pick” for drafting fan bases or NFL team Jersey and Merchandise sales..

But it damn sure is key to winning and going deep in the playoffs.

Who are the NFL’s top players 25 and under? League coaches, execs rank Herbert, Parsons and others

To construct such a list, we solicited the input of five NFL coaches and seven front-office executives, who were granted anonymity so they could share their honest opinions about the players. It’s quite the list, and with so many up-and-coming players, selecting and ranking them was no easy feat. Consider that Justin Fields, Aidan Hutchinson, Rashawn Slater, Riq Woolen, Jordan Davis and Brock Purdy, among others, narrowly missed the cut.

The experts gave the top-25 nods to the players they viewed as among the best at their position — not just in their age group, but league-wide. Some of the aforementioned exclusions very well could force their way into the top 25 by season’s end. But for now, the talent evaluators want to see a little more.

1. WR Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings, age: 24 (6/16/99)
Already tied for the record for the fastest to reach 4,000 receiving yards in his career, and the owner of additional receiving records, the fourth-year pro seemingly is on pace to challenge for GOAT status. Our panelists unanimously agreed that Jefferson is the most dominant player at his position and, pound-for-pound, one of the best at any age at any position — but certainly among players 25 and under.

Vikings rookie NaJee Thompson makes mark on special teams by flashing special speed
NaJee Thompson, an undrafted cornerback from Georgia Southern, is turning his success in track into a route to the NFL.

In 14 special teams snaps in his NFL preseason debut in Seattle last week, [NaJee] Thompson's speed leaped off the screen on at least two occasions as a gunner — once when he separated from a blocker and tackled a punt returner for no gain and once when he chased down a punt and downed it at the 2-yard line.

[Matt] Daniels likes Thompson's speed and loves his longtime devotion to special teams. Thompson went to Georgia Southern as a backup receiver and finished as a starting cornerback. But he always identified as a special teamer, period.

"That's who he is at his core," Daniels said.

"Senior Night in high school against Clover, I scored every way possible," Thompson said. "Pick six, punt return, threw a touchdown pass, had a rushing touchdown and had over 300 all-purpose yards.

"But my freshman year at Georgia Southern, I told them I don't want to play offense or defense. I want to go straight to special teams. I showed I can play offense or defense, but special teams, special teams, special teams. That's my ticket to the league."

Thompson did it all on special teams at Georgia Southern. In 2018-19, he had four fumble recoveries, blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown and forced a fumble. He blocked two more punts in 2020. A year later, Pro Football Network named him first-team All-America as a special teams player.

"We knew kind of his ability as a special teams type of player, kind of in that Matthew Slater-esque quality of speed, power, smarts, toughness," said Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell, who is close friends with Slater, New England's 10-time Pro Bowl special teamer who's still an active player at age 37.

Could have had Cook if he took the same $ with us that we offered.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/15/2023 5:46:54 PM)

Dalvin Cook’s gain is Minnesota’s gain, too.

With Cook agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with a base value of $7 million, the Vikings will be able to close the books on Cook’s contract.

Cook had $2 million in fully-guaranteed base salary for 2023, subject to offset. The contract with the Jets offsets the full amount of the salary the Vikings would have owed Cook.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2023 8:07:28 AM)

So if the Vikings are at 9.5 plus Dalvin's 2 million.....they could redo TJ contract for savings and sign JJ and possibly enough for Risner.

I never considered kene a viable option at running back...give mcbride all of the first-half carries and see what happens....

if we extend jj our cap number is coming down...we can do his contract next year - no hurry....

sign risner and the 2nd best guard available without any guarantees and see what happens....

right now we have the two worst starting guards in the NFL....

Redoing TJ and JJ won't cause the cap number to go down actually depending on what the signing bonuses and roster bonuses are. Wait on JJ contract (more $$)?

[:-] You post as if Cook's $2 million suddenly put the team over some magic threshold whereby we can announce contracts totaling over $150 million.

They could extend/sign all those players plus Darrisaw if they want and 'save' cap by backloading everything. In reality, they will need about $5 million for in-season transactions, and the remaining $6.5 million is barely enough for JJ's breakfast unless Kwesi wants to replicate Spielman's last few years in Minny.

I love it when we are sitting on a mountain of cap money.

This isn't one of those times, but I love it nonetheless.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/16/2023 9:54:02 AM)

This apparent flush with cap situation reminds me of the Colorado river. There was an increase in snowpack this year that finally but temporarily reversed things. People know the smart thing to do is to bank the water, but instead - absent a strategy and coherent direction - whoo hoo, let's grow more water-hungry alfalfa in the desert!

Risner and the next rated guard happen to be the alfalfa but they are not central to the analogy.
