Blair won rookie of the year in 1974 on that loaded Super Bowl team and made it to the Super Bowl three of his first four years on the team. Coincidence?

He did not.

You're putting me in a devil's advocate position, as if I really want to minimize Matt Blair's career.

Any objective rabid vikings fan would not put him near the top four.

IMO It's not even close. Top 20? I think so.

blair could do everything - how many blocked kicks/punts did he have?....

Matt Blair, the Minnesota Vikings linebacker (1974–1985), recorded 20 blocked punts, field goals, and extra points in his career. He is a Vikings franchise leader and recognized as one of the best special teams players, with 20.5 total blocked kicks often cited, featuring 19 combined blocked FGs and XPs.

So now you're double-posting. Same thing yesterday. At least I had the reading glasses excuse.

I know ratoppenheimer asked the question but no matter how great Blair was on special teams ... he's not even close to our Rushmore.

Except it wasn't a double post....he asked a question. [&:]
Nice try.

Matt Blair was great on ST and LB.....who is our Rushmore? He is very close on my Rushmore.

So yeah, double-post. Get some reading glasses.

Regardless of the question from ratoppenheimer - which I clearly mentioned.

"Very close on my Rushmore" is an absolutely fine way of saying it ... Again I made a clear mention in response to you yesterday of the difference between favorite players on a personal Rushmore vs. etched in stone all-time Rushmore players.

Get yourself two pairs of reading glassses with a couple more emoji laughing attacks.

No, don't mention anything about emojis to him. He constantly misapplies them.

I noticed that too.

A while back I texted my 25ish year old son a question. After waiting for an answer, I sent him another text with the whistling dude emoji. Like, 'I'm waiting...'

Only, again, I didn't have my reading glasses ... and it was the blowing kisses dude emoji.

"Dude! [he calls me that under high pressure circumstances] what's with the blowing kisses thing? Weird!"

So yeah, Phil and I bicker over most things but, we're perfectly in tune as far as emojis!

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (4/2/2026 3:04:29 PM)

.
.
i asked this question of ChatGPT....

in the NFL, over the last 30 years of drafting, which position has produced the most better-than-average players at that position, in the 3rd round of the draft?

ANSWER

If you use “better than average” as “became a regular starter / clear positive contributor”, the best answer is:

Offensive line has been the strongest 3rd-round position group over the last few decades.
If you split it more finely, interior offensive line looks especially strong.

Why I’m saying that:

A historical round-by-round position study cited in the draft analysis community found that 3rd-round offensive linemen had the highest success rate, around 40%, ahead of tight ends (39%), linebackers (34%), defensive line (27%), receivers (25%), DBs (24%), QBs (17%), and RBs (16%).
An updated version of that research in 2025 said offensive line led every round overall, and specifically that 3rd-round offensive linemen became full-time starters at almost 46%, which it called “far and away the largest percentage of any position group” in the later rounds.

PFF’s 2025 draft-value review also said interior offensive linemen are the position that most consistently outperform expectations early in the draft, reinforcing the idea that OL is the safest/value-rich bucket.

So the cleanest answer is:

Offensive line.
And if you want the sharper version: interior offensive line may be the real sweet spot.

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (4/2/2026 3:11:17 PM)

.
.
same question, 4th round....

ANSWER

Great follow-up — and this is where things get interesting, because the 4th round is where the draft really shifts from “expected starters” to value hunting.

Short answer

In the 4th round, the position that has produced the most “better-than-average” players is still offensive line, with linebacker and defensive line close behind.

4th Round Success Patterns (Last ~30 Years)

Using the same practical definition:

“Better-than-average” = multi-year starter / strong contributor

1. Offensive Line (Top again)
Consistently the highest hit rate even in Round 4
Especially:
Guards
Centers
Versatile linemen

Why OL keeps winning:
Development curve is longer → teams can afford patience
Technique + coaching matters more than raw traits
Less “boom or bust” than skill positions

👉 Translation:

You can still find starting linemen in Round 4 regularly

2. Linebacker (Very strong value zone)
One of the best Round 4 “bang-for-buck” positions

Many:
Become starters
Play long careers
Why:
Athletic but imperfect prospects fall
Easier transition than DB or WR

3. Defensive Line (Edge + Interior)
Solid hit rate in Round 4
Not elite production, but:
Rotational → starter pipeline

Why:
Depth position
Teams rotate heavily

4. Tight End (Sneaky strong)
Quietly one of the better Round 4 value spots

Why:
Late development position
Blocking + receiving skill combo takes time

5. Running Back (Situational success)
Can produce good players
But:
Short shelf life
Replaceable

Where it drops off:

Wide Receiver
Highly inconsistent
True difference-makers rarely come from Round 4

Defensive Back
Very hit-or-miss
Star players usually drafted earlier

Quarterback
Extremely low success rate
Rare exceptions skew perception

Key difference: 3rd vs 4th round

3rd Round
Still “starter expectation” territory

4th Round
Transition to:
“Development + value picks”

Big-picture insight (this matters)

The reason OL dominates both rounds:

It’s the least dependent on elite athletic ceilings and the most dependent on development

That makes it:
Safer
More predictable
More coachable

Cousins signed by Raiders.

Dude is the MVP of guaranteed money!

Adam Schefter:

Comp update: Kirk Cousins will sign a five-year, $172 million deal with the Raiders that in reality is a one-year, fully-guaranteed $20 million deal that also contains a club option for two years at $80M.

The Falcons will pay Cousins $8.7 million this season, the Raiders another $1.3 million and Las Vegas also agreed to pay its new QB a fully-guaranteed $10 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 new league year.

And maybe most notably, it also sets another new mark: this will be the 11th straight NFL season in which Cousins’ contract will be fully guaranteed.

I was looking and the Vikings as an organization have only 28 in the Vikings Ring of Honor:

Jared Allen, Matt Blair, Bill Brown, Browner, Bobby Bryant, Jerry Burns, CC, Doleman, Denny Green, Carl Eller, Jim Finks, Foreman, Bud Grant, Steve Jordan, Jim Marshall, McDaniel, Moss, Page, Randle, Korey Stringer, Scott Studwell, Ahmad Rashad, Fran, Mick Tingelhoff, Kevin Williams, Ron Yary, and Fred Zamberletti.

Weird....Blair is in that list.

Well, I can see why it may feel like that to you ...

sometimes it does feel like I'm tag-teaming what I believe to be a lame post, not just with Bill but with other posters too. And not just AT you.

I do think you tend to double-down even when a giant smoldering hole has been blasted through your logic. These are not coordinated attacks. I simply take issue with many of your arguments and respond. You do the same with mine.

Nothing you posted about the Ring of Honor supports your point or refutes mine. So your snarky 'weird' at the end of your post is a great example of your meandering, wayward argumentative points.

matt blair arrived in minnesota when the team was flush with legends on defense, and everyone already had their favorite player on a team that would become lionized in minnesota vikings' lore....

even if you loved blair, he's still overlooked among that group of 1970s established vikings superstars....

My perspective right now it is that it is likely again the Bears win the division, unless Murray exceeds expectations, if he is decent, the Vikings could be at their heels. Or if McCarthy shines.

Chicago - Caleb Williams along with Ben Johnson is a strong foundation
Minnesota - I expect a 2nd place finish in the division, unless the regular season gets a little magical like it was with both Cousins and Darnold
Detroit - 3rd in the division, still feeling the loss of OC Ben Johnson, Pacheco is sort of a wildcard here, but my guess he will get injured and miss plenty of the season.
GB - A rare occasion where I pick GB to finish last in the division. They will likely miss their defensive coordinator, but their passing game can keep them in any game. I also feel like they lost some good depth in FA.

This is a pretty competitive division, nobody really sucks. I feel if the Vikings win the division, they will be in the NFC Championship game, maybe make it to the Super Bowl.

Still have the draft and 2nd wave of FA.....way to early.

Dexter Lawrence asking for a trade is very interesting.....but even though he is 28 that is the opposite of what Brez has been trying to accomplish.
