No surprise on Murray being the starter. It's just our luck that we get the only truly lame duck when drafting McCarthy but I still don't really see why he was propped up in the first place. I suspect he will be condemned to the Justin Fields experience for his NFL career moving forward.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/11/2026 7:04:36 PM)

* It would be a mistake to trade McCarthy

* McCarthy has a much stronger work ethic than Murray, and might have passed him up if the "competition" went on any longer

* I agree with naming Murray the starter, and stated that in my earlier post

* The only mistake was not naming Murray the starter sooner, should have been done a week ago, not a day after Murray looked really awful

* Hopefully making Murray feel like he belongs brings out the best in him, and hopefully KOC can tweak the offense to build it around Murray

This team is cooked. I think this season will be the season that starts the downhill slope for KOC. Don't get me wrong I liked the Murray pickup for insurance reasons.

I just don't see the team doing too good with these two QBs. Both have injury issues. I hope like hell I'm wrong. Never was the biggest fan of the McCarthy pick but was glad we at least tried to get a QB.

I always felt like they tried to hide him in his college offense. Prove me wrong Vikes!

Probably liability only, with a high deductible.

Murray has been named the starter, no shock there.

Yep, the sun also rose in the east.

JJM got enough snaps to evaluate whether the switch came on. It didn't. Now KM can get the reps he definitely needs.

All in all, KOC handled the QB competition well. It was the media that created the hoopla.

Agreed... lots of fans/pundits pissing and moaning... I think KOC gave JJM enough time to show something... didn't see enough.

Time get Murray as many snaps as possible.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 9:39:48 AM)

It is premature to give up on McCarthy, you will see.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 9:39:56 AM)

Some late night and early morning bits from the guys watching the TC practices:

Coller on Kyler "had a great practice going 13 of 14 mostly to JJ and JA. The only incomplete was a 25 yarder that he overthrew a bit"

Wentz got a LOT more reps than he has been getting

Adams is being deployed all over the place

Zulgad had an interesting fact. Of guys drafted top 15, only 2 had less of a chance to prove themselves - Andre Ware
(I forget the other one)

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 9:41:24 AM)

I agree with giving Kyler starter reps, it is the wise decision at the time, see what he has.

But at the same time, I think it's premature to give up on McCarthy.

Wentz is going to be the last QB standing by Week 18.

Well, technically standing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-jzYMSiNHQ

IMO the best thing will be Preseason reps for McCarthy. He has to show consistency in his reads and throws and learn how to protect himself.
This is year 3 and we need to know by end of year if he is the QBOTF.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 10:58:16 AM)

Joint practices offer far more competition than preseason games. The latter are geared to evaluating whether 3rd stringers, fringe roster hopefuls, and walk-ons can adhere to vanilla schemes. The overriding goal is to hope there are no severe injuries.

Why Joint Practices Are Superior

Starters Get Quality Reps: Unlike preseason games where stars sit out, joint practices feature first-team units playing intensely against another team's first-team units.

Controlled Environment: Coaches control the scripts, choosing exactly when to simulate specific situations like red-zone drills, two-minute offenses, or goal-line stands.

Protected Quarterbacks: Franchise quarterbacks wear no-contact jerseys and cannot be hit, allowing them to face a real defense with zero risk of injury.

Secret Playbooks: Because these practices are not nationally televised, coaches can test their actual strategic schemes without putting them on tape for regular-season opponents to scout.

High Volume of Work: Teams get double the snaps in a two-hour practice compared to a three-hour game, maximizing evaluation time.

Breaking the Monotony: After weeks of players hitting their own teammates, facing an unfamiliar opponent in a new jersey re-energizes camp morale.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 11:09:27 AM)

https://www.si.com/nfl/why-joint-practices-are-nfl-rage-and-here-to-stay

People need to move off of preseason games unless they enjoy seeing if the broadcast crews have worked out kinks, the concession stands are ready to go, and like viewing a bunch of unknowns running around.

Plain and simple, they are a money-maker for the NFL. Some teams require people to buy the preseason game tickets as part of a season ticket purchase.

You mean backup right?

The QBOTF ship has sailed, clearly.

He needs to demonstrate he can rise to the level of a solid backup at this point, who isn’t constantly injured.

Does not mean he can’t claw his way into a starter equation at some point somewhere but first things first.

He just got passed over for the starting gig by the HC that used massive franchise resources to draft him. (albeit as maybe our third or fourth choice in that draft)

Its time to say goodbye to The Plan and move on.

I hope JJ sticks and develops. I honestly do. But I want him to stay the eff out of the way of progress if he isnt contributing as a player. I’m done with his highly drafted potential.

No idea how this plays out but I highly doubt he accepts a 'backup role'. At least, not long term. Not his personality.

Nor should he, he is just starting out … he has no chance to stay in the league if he’s okay with it.

We’ll see how he adapts / develops.

23 year old? Still QBOTF until traded or cut.......QBOTF doesn't mean starter. It applied just fine to Love and Rodgers for up to 4 years.

We needed 3 QBs in 1998. Odds are we need at least 2 this year. He obviously needs more reps.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 1:55:59 PM)

JMO but I think there's more to this than it seems. I don't see JJM being here much longer. There's just weird vibes between he and KOC. I have no proof of that. Just a hunch.

That's a big stretch in semantics for JJM at this point. From a pure definition aspect, he was more of a QBOTF the night he was drafted than he is now.

And there is a disconnect when you say "This is year 3 and we need to know by end of year if he is the QBOTF." then turning around and pointing to other QBs who sat "for up to 4 years."

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 4:10:41 PM)

QBOTF

Caleb - achieved
Daniels - seems so but multiple injuries in 2025
Maye - achieved
Nix - achieved

McCarthy - not achieved, multiple injuries in 2025, lacks fundamentals, not designated a starter going into year three

Pennix - sort of achieved. He starts, but he sucks.

Ouch. Tua got the preseason starting nod over injured Penix … but even that ‘competition’ is still being decided for the season opener. So for now JJ is 6th on your 4 person list!

QBOTF implies a franchise-type player. Or still on track to be a franchise type player.

Phil seems to think its a natural growth stage for any young unproven QB, like coming out of a pupa.

No.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 6:19:45 PM)

There are some aspects of JJs game and personality that I like, that would make great qualities in a starting qb.

He’s just got such a long path to get there, if he does …

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 8:38:51 PM)

Yeah, forgot about Penix.

What makes Phil's QBOTF remarks all the more strange is the timing. A mere 24 hours after JJM is officially relegated to being a backup, Phil labels him as the QBOTF! Benchwarming QBs everywhere, it's time to stand up and proudly crown yourselves!

It could be like a game show:
JJM: I am the QBOTF
Wentz: I am the QBOTF
Brosmer: I am the QBOTF

So contestant, who is the real QBOTF?

Trick question... they ALL are!

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/12/2026 8:50:27 PM)

Unless they add some lower tiers or JJM has photos of the Wilfs with sheep, there is no way his 5th year option is picked up next May.

For Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy—the #10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft—the 5th-year option for the 2028 NFL season will cost a projected $26 million to $30 million.

Because McCarthy was named the backup to Kyler Murray for the 2026 season after playing just 10 games in 2025, his valuation is uniquely tied to his sudden playing time deficit.
His specific tier-by-tier option breakdown is structured as follows:

McCarthy's 5th-Year Option Tiers (2028 Season)

Tier 4 (Basic): ~$26 Million
Likelihood: High.

The Situation: If McCarthy remains a backup or fails to meet the NFL's strict 75% lifetime snap counts over his first three seasons, he defaults to this base tier. For quarterbacks, this is calculated using the average of the 3rd through 25th highest salaries at the position, placing it right around the $26 million mark.

Tier 3 (Playtime Benchmark): ~$30 Million
Likelihood: Moderate.
The Situation: To trigger this tier, he must reclaim the starting job and play 75% or more of the team's offensive snaps in two of his first three seasons, or average 75% across all three. If achieved, the option climbs to an average of the 3rd through 20th highest QB salaries.

Tiers 1 & 2 (Pro Bowl Levels): $45 Million+
Likelihood: Very Low.
The Situation: If McCarthy achieves a late-career surge and earns one or two Pro Bowl nods on the original ballot before 2027, the price tag skyrockets. This would automatically match the Transition or Franchise Tag amount for QBs, which is expected to easily clear $45 million by 2028.

The Decision Timeline
The Minnesota Vikings (or any team that trades for him) must officially make a decision on whether to exercise or decline this option in May 2027.
If they choose to pick it up, the amount becomes 100% fully guaranteed the moment it is triggered.
Given the ongoing quarterback competition and heavy trade rumors surrounding him, his playing time over the next year will completely dictate if a team is willing to lock in that fully guaranteed total.
