Eighty-eight players will receive the Pro Bowl honor with no alternates, corralling a key aspect of the all-star event that had gotten out of whack in recent years.

88?

That creeps into the previously uncharted PB-4 area unless there are a heck of a lot of newly created 'specialists'.

Right in line with 44% of the teams make the playoffs. Such an achievement!

That's 2 players at each position for each conference, right?

I guess that's reasonable.

Ehhh, stupid me! Nice catch. Easy catch for you, which is much appreciated.

But it seems to leave out the special teamers? 22 plus another 22 for each conference is 44. Times two is 88.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/26/2026 8:17:01 PM)

Oh yeah!

So if 88 is the hard total, they must not be doubling up because they likely have a kicker, punter, returner, long snapper and maybe a general STer?

Or they just aren’t counting the ST in the total (very Zim like)

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/26/2026 9:17:38 PM)

Per Yahoo Sports they are carving the STs out of the total:
The total count of 88 players spans offense, defense, and special teams across both the AFC and NFC conferences. The specific roster distribution for special teams remains identical to the traditional layout, allocating 7 special teams spots per conference (14 players total).

And per the Guardian, they carved the SB players in whereby they just so happen to be in town during SB week(s):
Just like the offensive and defensive players, these special teams selections are determined using the exact same voting process—where ballots from fans, coaches, and players each account for one-third of the total vote. They will also bypass any physical competition and instead receive an invitation to the in-person celebration event in Los Angeles during Super Bowl week.

It will end awful players who don't deserve it getting into the "probowl" like in years past. Great example last year. Shadeur Sanders.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/27/2026 10:19:17 AM)

I've been reading too many articles on the Vikings training camp.

I mean, most of these articles are bloggers and they read so much into everything.

The biggest one was OMG JJM is splitting reps with Carson Wentz with the 2s. If he doesn't win that he's likely to get released!!!!

As it turns out JJM was splitting reps more because of a minor injury. and I have news, there is no way they are releasing JJM without a better QB3 on the roster. As inconsistent as JJM can be, Brosmer has been a nightmare.

Unless someone offers us a draft pick in trade...I don't see JJM going anywhere.

Wentz may be QB2. But they are still going to try to develop JJM.

That was pretty well the moment when the probowl jumped the shark. Even more than turning it into a flag football game.

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/27/2026 12:40:04 PM)

OK, so I really don't get how this all works, but this is from Spotrac.

I think we are on the books for the total dead cap, correct?
what is the difference between cap hit and dead cap?
Do we really only save the roster bonus at this point if JJ is cut outright?
If so, I can't imagine we would just cut him this year.

anyone able to enlighten me on how this system works?

yr age base signing roster workout cap hit cap % dead cap

2024 21 $795,000 $3,178,599 - $3,973,599 1.56% $21,854,796
2025 22 $960,000 $3,178,599 $828,400 $8,820 $4,975,819 1.78% $10,373,017
2026 23 $1,075,000 $3,178,599 $1,706,800 - $5,960,399 1.98% $6,357,198
2027 24 $1,190,000 $3,178,599 $2,585,200 - $6,953,799 2.15% $3,178,599

Financial aspects of an outright cut and a trade are discussed here: https://atozsports.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings-news/moving-on-from-j-j-mccarthy-will-have-consequences-for-minnesota-vikings/

Treat him like any typical low round boom/bust pick. Unless the team can bend time by bringing in another boom/bust type, creating a valid competition, and declaring a winner by Sunday's cutdown to 53, as of today my assumption is he'll be on the roster. After the cut to 53, maybe a QB they covet becomes available so who knows.

The dead money is not that bad with it being split, but the far more significant issue is getting the entire QB situation squared away. Once again, we are left with seeing how the year goes.

I'm not sure how you develop a guy who is injured 50% of the time... tough all around.
Banged up ankle and didn't practice today.
Be interesting to see if he plays in 3rd preseason game.

I find it hard to believe they'll just cut him.
But I'd also bet a small amount of money KOC would be much more comfortable leaning on Cooper Rush for part of the season than JJM right now.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 7:27:48 AM)

McVay started Ty Simpson and just had him dink and dunk to a tune of 21att-25comp. Let the kid get a feel for the speed of the game while making it easy so he can build the muscle memory in his footwork. Pukeface Payton groomed Nix similiarly.

I know JJM has been hurt half the time but I did not see O'Connell making anything easy for him. Dumping the whole playbook in the lap of a young QB usually drowns them. Can you imagine O'Connell trying to explain something with his 20 minute word salad answer?

Only somewhat accurate about Simpson. He was going through progressions and completed a few longer passes: https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/did-rams-rookie-ty-simpson-232458694.html

And he set a record by completing 25 passes in 21 attempts [;)]

But related to KOCs word salad, it's remarkable a QB can even repeat his War & Peace play calls. The camera will pan to KOC as he starts to call the play. It goes on, and on. And on some more. 10 seconds later the QB is in overdrive repeating it. 10 seconds after that a Delay of Game flag is thrown.

Its ridiculous. KOC speed talks to the QB like a combo auctioneer / tv medicine disclaimer. That wasn’t Darnold freezing up from playoff pressure, that was Sam overwrought by the pregnancy side effects of the play call.

LOL!

Even Kirk Cousins, who plans his life in 15 minute intervals and understands working on tight schedules, couldn't handle it.

Kirk Cousins famously plans his entire week using a color-coded spreadsheet broken down into strict 15-minute increments from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 1:22:18 PM)

The calls getting in late from O'Connell has been a pretty big problem. Maybe if he cut back on all the unnecessary words things might actually flow. He must love to hear himself talk because the 2 minute drills seem forbidden.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 2:20:38 PM)

Is it too "wordy" or he's waiting too long to see what he wants to call? There was a lot of chatter, early on, that he was a 'genius' because he would make the decision for the QB before the snap based on what the D showed.

But then the defense resets and the playcall is trash. Whatever it is, it's been a problem since he's been here. It's from the Shanahan/tree. Was it Darnold who had the least amount of problems?

A lot of folks remember the thing with Cousins scripting out his life in 15 minute intervals. I posted years ago the seeming problem of someone like that who is forced to create calm in the face of having this weird buttoned down control over his own life. Did the regime think oh yeah, he'll thrive when the pressure is on?!

Now there is Murray, who I think is fine going off script but may struggle with the preciseness KOC has created.

Someone needs to tell KOC his QBs are not Brady and Manning.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 4:57:02 PM)

QB Predictions

Best QB if bone structure stays intact: Wentz
Helter Skelter fun whirling dervish QB: Murray
Best Rah Rah Go Team Go QB: JJM
Most depressed because I can't beat out this trash heap QB: Brosmer

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 5:55:26 PM)

J.J. McCarthy won't play for the Vikings tonight, per source. They'd worked the past two days to get him back from the ankle injury he sustained against the Ravens on Saturday, but McCarthy ultimately wasn't comfortable enough with how his ankle felt to play against the Broncos.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/28/2026 6:55:15 PM)

I feel they have offer on the table that they do not want to risk losing.

quote:

J.J. McCarthy won't play for the Vikings tonight in Denver. He suffered a minor ankle injury last weekend vs. Ravens, participated in light practices Monday-Tuesday and sat out Wednesday. Didn't feel comfortable playing tonight, but no concerns from the team long-term.

Kirk years drove me crazy.

Darnold,Wentz,Brosmer didn't seem to have issues that I can remember.
Maybe it's player by player thing.
