You are where you are because I stubbornly believed I was cursing the Packers' season.

If this was true, you made them make the playoffs. Terrible execution on your part, you sucked at picking games and at cursing the Packers. Couldn't have done it any worse if you tried!

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (12/29/2013 10:43:59 PM)

Once the Packers won, but still didn't cover for me, I gave up picking them. I have a feeling if I had picked them against the Bears, the Packers would still have won, but just by 1 point. [:(]

I'm still hoping I can curse them by picking them in the playoffs, and they are 0-1 when I've worn a Packers jersey. IF I pick the Packers against the 49ers (with the spread), it will be both because I think the Packers are the most likely to cover the point spread, AND because I want to curse them. [:'(]

Ricky J -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (12/29/2013 11:11:50 PM)

Give it up, marty. He's right you know

Ian Joseph -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (12/29/2013 11:27:51 PM)

It's only weird if it doesn't work.

AFC
East
Dolphins got nothing
Jets got nothing
Bills are dropping QBs like flies
New England, to my chargrin, when they appear the most weak, will still win their division.

South
Texans to lose…only thing that keeps them from the div title is health, they need to keep Andre and Schaub etc upright.
Colts, Flash in the pan with Luck, they will be competitive, but will come back to earth now that Arians is gone.
Titans, years away yet.  They’re gonna stink.
Jaguars stink worse than the Titans

North
Ravens had too much turnover
Steelers will struggle
Browns will actually surprise people
Bengals will compete.
Tough division for me to predict but the Ravens are run well and will weather the losses of Lewis, Reed, and Boldin and hold on to the division.
West
Can anyone see the Chargers with a new coach, Raiders who have sucked for a decade, or the Chiefs fresh off the first overall pick, Alex Smith at QB and Andy Reid at HC overtaking the Broncos?
I didn’t think so either.

AFC Byes
Patriots
Broncos
Wildcard round
Ravens beat up on Browns
Texans take out Steelers
Yep…three teams out of the North.
Division round
Broncos exact revenge on Ravens
Texans upset the Pats
AFC Championship
Broncos beat up Texans
Giving us Peyton Manning vs the Vikings in the Superbowl…AND my purple shaded glasses say we WIN IT ALL!!!

OK.  The only thing I really got right here was the the obvious ones.  Patriots and Broncos getting the byes.  Everyone else completely wrong.

Simply put.  I suck at predicting shit.  Let's see how my NFC predictions worked out...

All right folks.  It’s officially time for my annual, pulled straight out of my ass predictions for the 2013 NFL season.

I will start with the NFC.
AFC will come in a later post.
NFC East
This is going to be a fun division to pick.
Giants division to lose imho.  Eli Manning will pilot this team effectively and the DLine will continue to give opposing OCs fits/nightmares.
Redskins come in second and fight for a wildcard playoff spot.  RGIII plays well and leads the team.
Cowboys believe Romo is the man…and that will be their demise until such time as they come to their blooming senses.  Jerry has lost his mind.
Eagles, with the options at QB being Foles, Vick, and Barkely, are going to struggle, especially with a new Head Coach.  Fancy offense will probably surprise a few teams early, but by seasons end they will have struggled mightily.
NFC South
This is going to be a dogfight between Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.  Bucs aren’t quite there yet but will give passing offenses fits, their offense is too inconsistent at this point…and the Panthers…well they’re gonna suck for a few more years.  Cam Newton is about all they’ve got going for them.
NFC West.
Another dogfight, this one between the concensus all around best team 49ers and the very competitive Seahawks.  Rams are on the upswing too with Tavon Austin lighting stuff up for them.  Cardinals have a terribly QB situation as Carson Palmer has sucked for years and nobody else is worth a poop there.
NFC North
VIKINGS!  Will surprise a lot of people.  Young hungry offense and defense and a motivated AD will run rampant on the NFC North.
Packers will be the only real competition until Aaron Rodgers gets hurt as the Packers have to have some bad Karma after nearly 21 years of only two QBs (with only Flynn getting one start), then they will suck.

Bears with new coach and no heart of defense will regress and Cutler implodes as usual.
Lions will compete but will end up in their normal position…last place.

Division winners
Giants
Falcons
49ers
Vikings
Wild Cards
Saints
Redskins

First round bye
49ers
Falcons

Wildcard

Vikings Redskinsm – Vikings win
Saints Giants – Saints win

Divisional round
Vikings SF.  Vikes upset the favorites just like in the 80s
Saints Falcons – dogfight continues with Falcons winning this round

NFC Championship game
Vikings take revenge for 98 upset.

I picked ONE wild card.  Everything else I got wrong.

This is why I don't work in Vegas handycapping games...

bgdavis -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (12/30/2013 12:22:56 PM)

Time to evaluate my pre-season predictions...
quote:

ORIGINAL: bgdavis

I hope I'm wrong, but my football prognostication senses are telling me it's going to be a very rough year for the Vikes due to the following:

- One or more key injuries
- Ponder not making enough (or any) progress, and no longer the starter by end of the season
- Final record 7-9 in a largely wasted year - well out of the playoffs, but not bad enough to pick up any high impact-level draft choices.

There were multiple injuries during the season (QB concussions, 1st and 2nd string RBs and TEs out by the end of the season), but it's hard to call anyone of them a "key" injury that sunk the season. The original prediction was overly vague, so I'm going to give this one a pass, rather than a hit or miss.

I hit the 2nd prediction. Regardless of last season's record, I just felt Ponder was not the answer at QB, and the results of this season clearly backed that up.

For the final prediction, it turns out I was overly optimistic at 7-9, yet when I wrote that I felt I was being pretty pessimistic, so I missed there. The part about a largely wasted year is partly correct, but we did learn we need a new QB (and a new coaching staff), and that we have to shore up the defense. Revealing those issues is probably better than a mediocre record and thinking we are still close. The 5-10-1 record leading to the #8 pick position, may hopefully be good enough to provide some quality starters in the first few rounds.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/1/2014 9:05:30 PM)

In the AFC I was right about Indy and Cincy being strong. Baltimore and Houston didn't make the playoffs, KC was stronger than expected. I underestimated Andy Ried, but I don't think he'll get far in the playoffs, more than 1 win would be a surprise.

Pretty close on the NFC, except Philly was stronger and Washington was weaker, and Carolina was a bit better than 8-8.

Could still be right about SF over NO in NFC Championship, but doubt that will be the case. Indy might make it to the AFC Championship as predicted, Cincy might be the team taking Houstons' spot, and representing the AFC in the SB. We'll see.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/1/2014 9:28:54 PM)

I don't like it that things are lining up for a playoff run for GB, hopefully SF ends their season this week. I think the winner of that game likely wins the NFC.

Seattle has a good shot, but there are questions about its' WR corps, they could probably use some size there, and there might be some chemistry issues. I think Carolina will probably be good for 1 win, and then will lose in the NFC Championship. I'm not sure Newton has a good enough short game just yet.

I hope if the Packers win, that N.O. also wins, so the Packers have to go to Carolina. If it's Philly over NO, which I expect, then the Packers would play at Seattle, and have a pretty good shot in what they view as a big revenge match for the game stolen from them (even though the refs gave GB every possible call until the very final play of the game).

I'm picking ALL the home teams this week, and my lock of the week is GB +3. I think GB + officials on their side, will win the game, or at least come within 3 points of winning.

We should get a pool going .....

Ricky J -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 8:41:28 AM)

KC -1, Philly -3, Cinn -7, SF -3

Wonder what the forecast of -3 high, -18 low does to SF chances? Can't really seeing those conditions benefiting anyone. Add a little wind.

It will get much harder to throw the ball.  The team that runs better and defends the run better will likely win.  SF is still the better team here.  Lacy for GB evens the field a little, Gore can still gash them and so can Kaepernick.  GB still struggles to stop the run.

I still go with SF.

John Childress -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 10:56:06 AM)

Kaepernick is going to have to run a lot

Right now, he is a better running threat than Rodgers coming off the collarbone injury

Ian Joseph -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 11:07:49 AM)

Everything points to SF, except the game just has that feeling.

Ed_Marotske -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 1:19:44 PM)

Something about the weather makes me think Green Bay wins this.  I mean its going to be a balmy -15 degrees.  Will be a fun game to watch.

Ed_Marotske -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 1:20:08 PM)

The dreaded double post!

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 10:50:04 PM)

Rodgers knows better how to win this type of game.

Rodgers will pass the safe stuff, not much in the intermediate range, and at the right time, the time to gain the momentum, hit them with a deep pass that, despite the weather, finds a way to get there. It will probably only take 2 deep completions, and GB wins. Nelson is usually the guy outjumping the opposition, or pushing them off and catching a deep pass near the sidelines.

When GB has the lead, and Kap is trying to throw deep, it will get intercepted.

GB will run heavy when they get ahead (Lacy and Starks), meaning SF will have few chances. Kap will have to be perfect, and the refs might even let GB defenders get away with a little bit of contact [;)].

Prescott -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 10:54:35 PM)

Prediction:

If the Packers win, Marty will say how he knew it, doesn't like it, but it went just like he thought it would.

If the Packer lose, Marty will say how he knew it, he just picked them so they would lose and it worked like he thought it would.

Tomorrow the Colts win and the Saints take it in an upset. Niners and Bengals advance too.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 11:42:11 PM)

If the Packer lose, Marty will say how he knew it, he just picked them so they would lose and it worked like he thought it would.

Wrong, I DID actually believe I was hexing them by picking them earlier in the year, as they lost EVERY game where I picked them, something like 5 straight. I no longer believe that. I'm picking them because I think they will win, they're due to beat the 49ers. Good teams don't usually lose to another good team 4 straight, especially if the 4th game is a home game for the one that lost to the other 3 straight times.

marty -> RE: Predictions for Next Week (and maybe beyond) (1/3/2014 11:45:30 PM)

I think all the home teams will win.

It might make sense for the refs to help the home teams that had trouble selling out their games, that will help fan interest. Financially, you certainly wouldn't want a place that had trouble selling out to LOSE more fan interest.

The blackouts seem like a bad idea, financially. But helping the home team win, seems like a good idea financially.
