Minnesota Basketball Recruiting: Gophers Get Commitment from 4-star PG, Isaiah Washington
Gophers Get Commitment from 4-star, New York City PG, Isaiah Washington

By GopherNation @TheDailyGopher Sep 11, 2016, 11:45p

Isaiah Washington is a 4-star rated point guard from the Bronx. On Sunday he gave a verbal commitment to Richard Pitino and the Golden Gophers. This is simultaneously an impressive get for the Gopher staff and a very interesting turn of events for the staff as they work on filling out the 2017 class. But first, let’s get to know Washington, the newest Golden Gopher commit.

Washington plays his high school ball for St. Raymond’s High School and according to Scout is the number one point guard in the state of New York. Scout ranks him 65th overall in the class of 2017 and ESPN ranks him 96th.

What you read about him is that he is tough, hard-nosed, a good distributor and fast.

From Scout’s analysis...

quote:

2017 guard Isaiah Washington is a tough, quick and aggressive lead man that can both score it and facilitate. Washington, who stands 6-foot-1, is average athletically, but he has a quick first step, is a strong ball handler and finds ways to get by defenders and get into the paint.

Ryan James of Gopher Illustrated also claims this is the top rated point guard the Gophers will have brought in since Ariel McDonald.

ESPN’s strengths...

quote:

Washington is the prototypical NYC point guard. He's hard-nosed, competitive and fearless in his approach, not to mention a talented playmaker with some flair to his game. Perhaps most importantly though, he's a player who has consistently improved and added to his game with each passing year. His most natural ability is to make plays with the ball in his hands. He's got a tight handle, good quickness and the ability to both create for himself and his teammates. He's developed his body enough to take some contact on the way to the rim and also developed into a more consistent shooting threat from the perimeter. Defensively, he can guard the ball the length of the floor and apply pressure in the half-court.

The Gopher staff has been all over Washington from the beginning and were the first program to offer him. His official visit this past weekend was enough to get him to give the verbal that many expected he would eventually give.

Now things are a little bit interesting when it comes to scholarships the Gopher are able to give out this year. They technically only have 2 to give and desperately need a point guard in the class of 2017. So this is a huge win right?

Well...there just so happens to be a local point guard who is also highly rated and would seem to be a great fit for the Gophers. He happens to be McKinley Wright and he is planning to announce his decision (between Minnesota and Dayton) on Thursday.

So would the Gophers take 2 point guards in this class with only 2 scholarships available? They will potentially take the commitments from three guys, knowing that transfers are likely. But then the question is would two, 4-star point guards both want to go to the same school when they play the same position?

It becomes very interesting heading into Thursday when Wright makes his announcement. Oh...and Theo John was visiting this weekend as well. A 4-star power forward, who is a teammate of Wright’s, was on his official visit this weekend as well.

But today, we have Washington in the fold. An NYC, 4-star point guard who wants to be golden (as long as Syracuse doesn’t offer). How the scholarships shake out, will be discussed another day. But today we landed the first recruit in the 2017 class and he’s a good one.

Welcome to Gopher Nation Mr. Washington.

I used to go to a lot Howard Pulley league games and watch Old Man McDonald undress the current Gopher PG's year after year. All their youth and athletecism didn't stand up against Ariel and his massive BBIQ. He simply toyed with them.

& Pitino whiffs on Wright and John......losing in-state recruits to Marquette and Dayton.....wth.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (9/13/2016 9:58:07 PM)

I was really hoping that when Pitino landed Amir that it would be the start of locking down the borders a little bit. Still losing out on one in state blue chip after another.

But to Marquette and Dayton? Not Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky....Dayton.

Wright wasn't coming here once we signed a better PG from the same class.

Losing Theo John hurts though.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (9/14/2016 6:16:55 AM)

Especially losing him to a Wisconsin school. [X(]

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (9/14/2016 11:23:41 AM)

Theo John is the gut-punch to Gopher fans. The John recruitment came down to Marquette and Minnesota. The Gophers offered John long ago and have made him a priority recruit. They spent their summer making sure a member of their staff was always in the gym watching his games throughout the summer, including Richard Pitino. John has picked Marquette despite the fact that according to Ryan James at GopherIllustrated.com, Head Coach, Steve Wojciechowski never once made John a priority enough to watch him live in the Open Period this summer.

The Gophers just finished up an historically bad season. Two Big Ten wins, suspensions, a kid transferring and an incredibly frustrated fan base has made for a pretty negative environment around the Gopher program.

That's what needs to change. Pitino has actually done a nice job recruiting out of state, but we're not getting many big names until we start putting a decent product back on the court.

Coffey scores 30 to lead the Gophs over St Johns.
Not a bad win, eh.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/19/2016 8:56:07 AM)

In this part of the schedule it's really hard to evaluate a team. The level of competition isn't there. But you have to kind of look for signs here and there and read the tea leaves as best you can.

I have no idea how this team will end up by end of year. But I can say one thing. This is a completely different looking team than last year. They have put last year far in the rear view mirror. And that's a good thing. That doesn't guarantee success. But last year's team was an awful mess. This year they are a real team. They look cohesive and confident.

And if Coffey continues as he played last night. He is a one and done. That was the most impressive freshman performance we've seen in these parts in a long, long time.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/19/2016 12:24:49 PM)

They actually added 2 athletic PF/C to the mix too.....they should be in the mix this year. Lynch/Curry/Coffey/Springs....nice 4 guys added to the mix.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (11/19/2016 9:42:24 PM)

Coffey was impressive. Could be an interesting year. I wish more top MN talent would stay home. Kids need some pride in their own state.

Lots of those top recruits are one and done....nothing worse then only having Coffey for 1 year....hope to have him for 2. It really hurt to loose Fitzgerald. The Gophers have so much more average size, speed, and length with Coffey at the 2...incredible difference as Pitino can add defense to the mix.

#Gophers hoops hosting Daniel Oturu, Race Thompson (Darrell Thompson's son), Gabe Kalscheur, Jarvis Thomas tonight. 2018 studs. First two are HUGE wants. Gabe too.

So are we actually going to field a BB team this year?

Thought we were banned by the B10 after not fielding a team last season.[:D]
