I'm beginning to like the early rotation that Tubby uses. The second 5 play as well as the starting 5 and the team doesn't lose a beat and they end up wearing down the opponent. They need to start the 2nd half with the same amount of energy and they will be very tough in the Big 10

He's back. Kind of.


Minnesota freshman forward Royce White practiced with the Gophers for the first time in weeks Thursday morning, according to his grandfather, Frank White. White has not played a game this year after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct and theft in December in connection with an October Mall of America incident and being named a possible suspect in the theft of a laptop in November.


White's legal status is still up in the air, as a result of the laptop case. Minneapolis city spokesman Matt Laible told reporters a few weeks ago that the city attorney's office had received the laptop case and planned to review it for possible charges. But that never happened.


"As the [university police] [were] passing it to us, an additional investigative matter came up, so they’re completing some further investigation and they’ll submit the case to us shortly," Laible said Thursday. Once the city attorney's office receives White's case, it will be about a month any decision is made, Laible said.


Until Thursday, White hadn't practiced or participated in any team activities as a result of his indefinite suspension.


But Tubby Smith met with White and one of his mentors before Tuesday's win over Penn State, according to his grandfather. 


He said both sides discussed his situation and moved in the "right direction."
White's grandfather hopes Smith will allow the first-year man to travel with the team to Iowa Saturday.
While White announced that he was leaving college basketball and the Gophers a few weeks ago via YouTube, the team hasn’t stopped reaching out to him. Smith obviously hasn’t cut ties with the freshman forward and has repeatedly told reporters that he’s still suspended indefinitely. And a few other sources close to the team told me that he’s always hoped that the former Hopkins star would make some changes and put himself in a position to return to the program. Some former players have reached out to him, too. From Patrick Reusse’s AM1500 blog: [Randy] Carter and [Arriel] McDonald and a couple other ex-Gophers who live here have reached out to Royce White, the troubled Gophers' freshman who remains on suspension. "Royce is an intelligent young man and an outstanding talent,'' McDonald said. "I think he's feeling overwhelmed right now. We're trying to get him to step back, take a look at all he has going for him and take advantage of that. "We all deserve another chance, especially an 18, 19-year-old kid. I truly believe Royce is going to be OK.''

I'm not rote enough on the sport to know - - - is Minnesota that good, or is Iowa really bad?

I loved the turnovers, and I loved hearing the interviewer after the game referring to Blake Hoffarber as "the best shooter in the Big 10."

I love Tubby Smith and what he's done for the program.

I think more than us being that good or them being that bad, we're just a horrible match-up for them.

They are short and slow. We're long and fast. At times it looked like we were playing 7 on 5. Plus we're scary deep. We have 10-12 guys that can all deserve 15+ minutes, so we can play at full speed for 40 minutes.

We're still missing an "alpha scorer" (although Williams has that potential), so we can struggle in the halfcourt, but when we force turnovers and missed shots, we can be kind of awesome in transition.

It must have been a layoff for Purdue to struggle and be down 1 at the half in IA City in the conference opener.

The Gophs pressure d on their youngsters handling the ball was so key.

They won't get too many easy ones like that against the tough teams.

I read Lickliter kicked off 4 kids off the team that played last year(story said he announced they would not be coming back).

They need to play the methodical route, vs same type team to have a chance.


That said, MN did a superb job right off the opening tip.

Win the games you're supposed to, and take your chances against the best in the conference.

And, BTW, get Sampson healthy. Need him in the post. They're totally different without Iverson in the lineup, with no Sampson.

I think Iowa is in for a very tough conference season, they're very similar to Indiana last season.  I'm surprised they gave Purdue as much of a game as they did earlier in the week.

DL, I agree with you about them matching up with us.  Our athleticism gave them fits in the fullcourt and we were able to get to the rack against their less than quick feet.  I'm afraid that we're still going to have a tough time scoring against teams that play physical, tough man to man half court D. 

I have to say, I am impressed with the improvement of Westbrook this season.  He absolutely drove me nuts last year with his shot selection and his general habit of being out of control.  I can't believe how well he finishes around the rim with his lack of size.  Hoff has been on fire, we can't count on him shooting like this all year. 

The next week and a half will be a good indicator for the rest of the season.  At Purdue, vs. OSU, at MSU.  Gotta beat the Bucks, because I don't think we have a snowballs chance in the other two games.  Hopefully I'm wrong, though!

Be nice if Williams grows up fast. We don't have a single player that can really take over a game and break down a defense from the halfcourt.

I saw a prediction where the Hawkeyes were projected to be dead last in the Big 10.

Lets put it this way.  That coaches kid PG looked fat and out of shape.  I'm pretty sure I could have blown right by him [>:] [&:]

I must have seen a different game. I came away from it thoroughly frustrated with this team. They got outplayed for the last 25 minutes.

They were up 22 points with 1:50 left in the game. I think they got outplayed in the final 2 minutes.

Buddy texted me the same thing during the game ....
It felt like that lead was always lose-able.
Unreal how quickly that Iowa program has dropped.
Did you look around the stands? That used to be a zoo. It was basically an empty arena.

The D got pretty lax the last little while. Was pretty disappointing.

The end of the first half was quite disappointing as well. Iowa outscored us in the second half.

In the end, they did. We outscored them by 5 for the first 18:10, they outscored us by 10 over the final 1:50.

We let them hang around the 15-20 point mark too much in the 2nd half. If we had someone that could score in the half court consistently, we probably would've pushed the lead to 30 or more.

I think that's what bugs me David. This was a game the Gophers should have put away by 25-30. Iowa should have been allowed to make little runs to get the gap below 20. If the Gophers are going to make the next step they have to get up on a team like Iowa and put the boots to them.

I think the fact that it was 22 with less than 2 minutes left does that. They never made a run, so I think its probably nature to ease up a bit. And also like I said, we don't have a halfcourt stud on the team, so we need to score off defense and pressure. I'm sure its hard to maintain that focus in a laugher.

They got really hot for 2 minutes, but there was no way they were making a comeback.

There will be a L vs Purdue tonight. Iverson will get in trouble foul-wise, and Purdue will pound MN inside.

No Sampson in the lineup will hurt them a lot in this game.

It doesn't do it for me David. Not when they were up by 26 or 27 earlier. That final run at the end of each half should not have happened. Any final score with less than a 25 point margin in that game is disappointing to me. I expect more.

Jim, I think the Gophers are going to get stomped through the floor tonight.

Without Sampson is better since he doesn't rebound much anyway. Iverson is better in the post IMO

Neither one is that great and they need both since neither can really play full time minutes.
