ABSOLUTELY! I hate UW athletics far worse than the Packers.

First Pitino win at the Barn vs Wisconsin since 2014 his first year, per the story I read.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/8/2020 4:00:38 PM)

Terrible, sloppy first half. Penn St has a good defensive plan and Pitino and Gophers have no clue how to deal with it.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/16/2020 2:05:24 PM)

Complete team meltdown the final 5 minutes.

Shame. We had this one.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/16/2020 2:07:26 PM)

I rarely watch any BB, but decided to tune in for the final quarter of the Gopher game. I was reminded why I don't watch.....have we ever had a clutch player since Bobby Jackson?

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/16/2020 2:09:08 PM)

Iowa ends the game on a 10-0 run for the win.

In other words, what has become a typical Pitino finish.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/16/2020 6:17:49 PM)

Not just Pitino. It seems like that's in the DNA of every coach of every sport we have. How many late in the period goals have we seen the Wild give up to hand us a loss? Or late inning runs in baseball? Ditto for football.

I'm probably just whining because I remember the heartbreaks and not so much the wins, but it feels like this is the lot we've been handed as Minnesota sports fans. I never feel comfortable until we're up by three scores with a minute and a half left in a game. (It would have to be more like ten scores for basketball).

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 7:13:26 AM)

Another loss of another must win game as the Gophers swirl down the drain. Put a fork in them.

They are unwatchable right now. Klunky, error prone, seemingly depressed and frightened to be on a basketball court. Same problems they always have under Pitino:

1. No depth, they always have a couple of legit good players, but they also always have a couple of players at any given time on the court who have no business playing Big 10 basketball.

2. All players no matter their raw skill level manage to under perform and under utilize their skills. You will never see a guy who seems to be getting ‘coached up’, honing his talent. You see them making the same mistakes over and over, and you see no concept of team, where the whole is greater than the parts. Just the opposite. The whole is far less than the sum of the parts.

I’ve been very patient with Pitino even while others weren’t. I’m done with him. This isn’t going to change.

Good recap.
Writing is on the wall over there.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 8:21:45 AM)

A program that is about as dull and lifeless as could be.

Don’t even produce much upper level talent
And still mediocre.

Going to need a change

Guy at the top can’t get anything going.

Murphy, Coffey, Oturu

What’s it gaining them?

Three guys last couple of years

The program doesn’t reload

Past couple years at least
Little to no depth

It’s not a good program.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 9:29:17 AM)

It’s like I said. They get one or two good players occasionally. But no depth and no supporting cast. And the good players never develop. They stall out.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 9:35:19 AM)

Pitino needs to go. He wasn't Coyle's hire, so I don't really see him surviving after missing the tournament again.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 3:52:42 PM)

Pitino now 46-80 in the Big 10

2 million dollar buyout before May 1

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 3:54:35 PM)

That would be money well spent. Get the last of Teague's hires out of here.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 3:56:55 PM)

He got a two year extension to 2024

But they’re now under .500 and only averaging 10k per home game

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 4:08:19 PM)

Doogie:

Even though the buyout drops to $1.75 million in May, they'd really only save $150,000 by waiting until May because he's due a $100,000 retention bonus on April 30.

The contract is set up for Coyle to either make a move now or commit to Pitino for multiple more years. The buyout only drops $500K in 2 years.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 4:11:58 PM)

Cut the cord. Two more years of Pitino will only make it that much harder for the next guy to try to salvage the program. Coyle's hiring track record is pretty damn good, so far. Let's go for another one.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/20/2020 7:32:39 PM)

Wonder what PJ knows about B-Ball.

Failure to get in state talent to stay.
Failure to build a bench (injuries happen every year to almost every team)
Failure to coach up talent....Carr, Oturu, Coffey, Murphy just came in and were that good IMO.

Careful ….. this might be one of those "protected golden boy" zones …….. [:D]

Like Michael Cuddyer.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/21/2020 1:37:59 PM)

No, just PJ. I took his name in vain in here once, and part of my house was fire-bombed.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (2/21/2020 1:42:20 PM)

Not true. The molotov cocktail didn't even stay lit .... er ... what I meant to say was ... gotta go!
