As the clock ran down and the last interception was thrown I just kept thinking about how typical this is for fans of Minnesota sports. Seriously - why can't we ever seem to catch a break?

I feel like we caught most of the breaks last night.  Until the very end.  Then we just gave them the breaks.

Horrific.
Game was lost at twelve, eight, and four minutes left.
Losing by 40 would have been easier.
Horrific play calling and clock management.
Horrific.

As usual, SMF, I agree.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2012 5:08:23 PM)

Guess I was wrong about Syracuse.  How did we beat them?  I remember them as a terrible team.  Something must have changed.

I guess I was talking about a bigger picture break. Why can't we ever seem to be the fans left cheering at the end of a big game?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/29/2012 11:13:44 PM)

I was actually proud and shocked at the same time. We should have been blown out. Kill and his staff had a great plan (and adjustments) until the final 5 minutes. I look forward to next year.

drew -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2012 12:27:43 PM)

I agree with you Jeff. The talent disparity between the two teams is a lot more than 3 points, but we could/should have won the game. I think Kill's staff had a really good game plan with the running and play action, and the d backs did an excellent job. Too bad we lost, but I was pretty happy with how we played.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/30/2012 1:12:10 PM)

Needed one measly first down on any of the final four drives.
And we win a big game.
And our coaches had no clue how to get one.
And our players had no idea how to get one either.
No sense of urgency, no cleverness, no clue.
Our RBs are a collection of the least -dangerous athletes I've ever seen.
If blocking is there for a five yard gain, they will get five yards.
The offense lacks any semblance of play making. Some decent game planning early on, horrible late.

I’m along this line of thinking also. With some time to digest the bowl game, I have a few thoughts going forward:

There’s a reason we were 13 point dogs. They were the better team but I thought we still went toe to toe with them. Arguably we were the 9th best team in our conference. At best we were #8.

I don’t think the coaching was great or horrible. Many folks said our only chance was to pound them with the running game. And that turned out to be the gameplan. Not rocket science IMO. I would have used Gray more but whatever. Philip Fabulous actually did some good things but he’s still a true freshman straight out of the Big Nine conference & thrown into a starting role in the Big Ten. I didn’t mind the two throws by Gray near the end. Yes, Nelson is a better passer but FWIW, Gray has completed 57% of his passes this year. Nelson ended at 49%.

Where were T. Olson and T. Cochran? Could have used both.

Engle is probably our best WR. It was Barker before he quit. Fruetche may be #2. McDonald was nearly invisible most of the year. Moulton has practically fallen of the face of the earth after starting much of last year. Marcus Jones is usually hurt. DCT is coming along slowly, but seems to be still learning. Redshirting would have helped him big time. A scary group. We need Harbison next year but that’s counting on a Freshman to solve this problem.

Offensively, we are what we are. And that’s mediocre running the ball and below average throwing it. All linemen and RB’s return next year. Throw in a few more new linemen (Bobek, Persig, Hayes) and possibly the RB recruit Edwards (Braylon Edward’s little brother) and it should only get better.

Defensively, we were terrible vs the run and so-so against the pass. Seven of eight defensive linemen return from the two deep. A lot of experience is lost at LB & even those guys did not play great. Two starting CB’s will be missed as they were more than acceptable.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 9:34:17 AM)

Now that Nelson figures to be #1, all spring he and receivers can get together and practice getting timing and tendaciesdown

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 10:17:50 AM)

I was surprised we had a chance to win. In the first half our defense looked like it was running in wet cement. I really can't fault coaching for this loss. The bottom line is that Kill took over a team that looked like as one assistant put it "these kids look like they have never been coached", to a bowl game in his second year. The jury is still out IMO. I still have real concerns about his seizure issues. He has a great "nothings going to hold me down" mentality, but you have to wonder how that affects recruiting and coaching.

The biggest problem facing Nelson is that the Gophers still don't have a receiver who can just go get the ball. I saw a lot of guys get behind defenders all year and either tried to catch over the wrong shoulder, fade away to try to catch it instead of going up for it or try to catch with the body instead of the hands. Exhibit A is the final int. The ball went off the receivers hands and up in the air before getting picked.

I'm hoping the success of pedestrian backs like Kirkwood in this offense will lure some legitimate #1 caliber backs.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 10:22:51 AM)

I will agree with one thing .... We were in a game we probably had no business being in.
But it's frustrating to be there and not be able to make plays.
The D made plays the last 12 minutes (2int) .... The O did not.

So Fargo....with the season now over what changes would you like to see? What improvements need to be made & how would you do it? How do you access the coaches/new AD/facilities/team/etc?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 12:42:42 PM)

And I thought expectations for the Twins were lowered?

Maybe I was watching a different game. But I saw a game that was close at halftime....but a 2nd half in which we dominated until about 5 minutes to go. What was that defense at the end? We went from stopping them time and time again to suddenly giving them yards at will. We also got away from our gameplan by passing too often late in the game. Keep doing what was working. Run with Gray and mix in the RBs. Going with Nelson on the last drive was not the correct decision. Go with your vet. Your franchise. Or the guy that was supposed to be your franchise if you could have surrounded him with any semblance of talent. There's no debate that Gray is the best offensive skill player we have. But he was not on the field as we intercepted the game away. Brilliant.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 1:15:28 PM)

Matt this season was the equivalent of the Twins improving from 41 wins to 75 wins.

I saw a game that in the first half was even until a series of eff-ups and brain farts gave Tech the lead, the momentum and the opening kick off for the second half. Their offense in the first half absolutely shredded our defense in the first half. It was downright embarrassing how easily they were moving the ball on us. The coaches made adjustments at half time and the Gophers did take control. Why no credit for that? All of this was against a team with superior personnel and a heavy favorite. I have no problem with the decision to go with Nelson. He was part of the Gophers taking control what with him throwing 2 TD passes. It's disappointing that it got away, but calling for Kill's head after a 6 win improvement is a bit extreme.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 1:17:39 PM)

Gray has to be on the field
Has to be.
He wasn't.

Sorry. Heat of the moment. Didn't really want him canned. But I said he shouldn't feel comfortable with what happened. I'm sure we called for Mason's head when we blew the bowl game vs. Texas Tech too. Maturi followed through. Unfortunately.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 1:25:49 PM)

That's a good point Matt. That's exactly where I see this team now. Where Mason couldn't get past. We'll see what Kill's crew can do moving forward. Being where Mason's team were are light years beyond Brewsters. I see that as moving forward.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (12/31/2012 1:26:31 PM)

I've enjoyed this journey back to decent with you guys.
Thanks Jeff, Matt, Sweens, Pete, panndder, always appreciate the info .... [8|]
Here's hoping we get all the way to respectable, soon.

Best athlete we have had.
It's
Ike removing AD on third downs.
Why?

Because you're not always right. [sm=xp.gif]

Let us be right for once, OK?

I mean, we lost. The outcome favors our position.

How do you know I'm not always right?
Why does it favor your position?

I grew up with 3 older brothers and 3 older sisters. I can keep this up all week.
