It was a pretty decent weekend to be a Gopher Football fan. Probably our last of the season. [:o]

Said that several times yesterday.
My most relaxing weekend of Gopher Football in a long time .....

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2015 7:26:06 PM)

Btw ... how F-ing bad is PURDUE [:-][:-][:-]

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2015 8:02:01 PM)

Btw .... take a look at what Miami did today after their Coach disappointed them, Jerry.

I'll never look at him the same way after that whiny-assed "poor me" post-gamer a couple weeks back. Grow up.
This is a game for big boys.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2015 10:44:56 PM)

I'm pretty convinced that something else was going on with Kill that weekend. His reference to his wife ... and then a pause with a hitch in his voice ... and then those odd statements about being fired and going to live in his cabin. It just didn't sound like Kill.

So for now I'm choosing to not judge him too harshly on that one news conference.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/25/2015 10:48:20 PM)

alright, Ma .... I'm sorry.

Claeys takes over

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 8:23:18 AM)

Lynn nailed this one!
He's obviously been hurting for awhile.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 8:41:26 AM)

Wow - I was taking a stab in the dark but it just may have been a bullseye. They said recently that he hadn't had a seizure in quite a few months so it sounded like they may have come up with some good management meds - so I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't had a different issue. Perhaps a recurrence of his earlier cancer.

How sad. The man lives for football and you can tell he thinks of his players and coaches like family. I would assume things have to be pretty dire for him to retire.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 8:58:50 AM)

I was thinking the same thing Lynn. He made a big deal recently that he still has had his drivers license for a year now and you have to be seizure free for like a year and a half before you even get it back. My first thought was a recurrence of cancer. I wish him the best of luck. I don't know how much farther he was going to take the program, but he definitely left it in better shape than he found it. We were going to bowl games, our players were staying out of trouble and academic performance was greatly improved.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 9:16:11 AM)

Just watching the Jerry Kill press conference on TV. He says he's had seizures, and he appears overcome with emotion. This is heavy.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 9:25:40 AM)

@RandBall
Kill, 54, said he thought about Flip's recent death at age 60. "You'd be lying to say if you didn't think about that."

@JoeCStrib
Kill: "I think, it's not Coach Kill is the perfect fit. I think our people are the perfect fit for the people of MN and the state of MN."

That may be, but I hope they don't continue with the current regime. Kill is being modest but he's the straw that stirs that drink. I think it's time for his posse to go their separate ways.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 3:59:53 PM)

So who are the dream candidates out there that people are hoping will be the next Gopher football coach? I ask because I have no idea.

MDK -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 4:08:45 PM)

Matt Rhule third year as head coach at Temple

Do you give the job to Tracy Claeys and his staff or do you go outside?

I think until you hire an AD, you give the job to Claeys on a permanent basis. No way do you make such an important hire until a permanent AD is in place.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 4:38:21 PM)

I completely disagree. Kill raised the profile of the job, which will make it more attractive to potential candidates than when Basement Brew left. You have to get a guy in here now who can run a program and not just run the show on the sidelines the way Clayes did before. You need someone who knows how to organize, recruit and implement systems at the D1 level. Claeys has never done that. My personal opinion is that Goetz will be made the permanent AD. Even if she isn't, they should be able to hire a coach with her as the interim AD. You don't want the profile of the job going backwards while you wait to hire an AD.

MDK -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 4:44:13 PM)

If Goetz is made the AD, then I agree to move quickly.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 5:07:12 PM)

Spurrier is available. [:D]

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 5:47:30 PM)

That would be going from what seems to be a really good guy who you wished didn't have seizures to a dick that you wish did.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Football (10/28/2015 7:09:04 PM)

Best to Coach Kill and his family. Like he said "health before wealth".
He loved the game, but loves life more.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/29/2015 7:48:08 AM)

So .... who's OK with Claeys taking over permanently?

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (10/29/2015 8:20:20 AM)

Too early to tell.

I think the AD thing needs to be clarified first. Whomever becomes the AD will likely want to hire their own coach. Claeys should be given consideration, but so should outside candidates. If the teams keeps playing terribly then I'm OK looking stronger at outside candidates, if they somehow finish strong I'd lean more towards giving him a chance.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (10/29/2015 8:26:49 AM)

Thanks for sharing.
Thinking that's probably the majority opinion at this point.
Couple-game tryout here, probably.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (10/29/2015 9:40:10 AM)

Not me. Claeys has shown he can run a block of games from the sideline. There is a hell of a lot more to being the guy at the top of the program. You have to know how to organize a recruiting staff. You have to know how to pick the right assistants because there will be turnover on any staff. You have to know how to game plan and adjust the plan on the fly. This is a crucial juncture in rebuilding this program. I want a guy who has proven that he can do these things as a head coach. Claeys has Gutekunst written all over him IMO.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (10/29/2015 11:07:21 AM)

I like Claeys ability as a coach....no idea if he can recruit and manage the program. The current regime has been able to coach up kids on defense especially. Something I could not say about past regimes.

I do like Jerry's Asst Coaches....tough to bring in a new system/HC and lose them. Be nice to get a guy who would keep all of them on staff.
