But that's just me. And that's very important.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2017 4:59:13 PM)

Penn State looks overwhelmed by USC early in the Rose Bowl (down 10-0), but slow starts have been the Lions' thing all year. In the first half, they've been outscored by 30 points this year and are plus-196 after halftime.

Exactly how I remember almost every B10 visit to the Rose Bowl when I was a youngster. (overwhelmed)

When playing USC?

Definitely.

Loved the Tailback U days.
Knew it was coming.
Didn't matter
John Robinson and John McKay before him.
Pound pound pound and then wheeeeeee! Up and over your heads with a Swann bomb.
Also loved it when Washington would come down and take over the beatings.
Warren Moon, Sonny Sixkiller, ahhhh the good old days when Bowl Games on NYD were THE BOMB.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2017 5:34:56 PM)

Even UCLA ... they'd take a crack every decade and apply a whuppin as well. Ricky Neuheisel ...
Loved watching Woody Hayes and Bo Scumbuckler fuming.
Especially loved watching Hayden FryDaddys mob shades hide his tears.

Huge 3rd Q and they're up

Explosive

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:06:24 AM)

So, big week for the program. I read the Strib article where TC's is lobbying for his job (not that I blame him). He's quoting good recruiting (cough/cough), highest graduation rates (or some equivalent) and 9 wins.

He also acknowledged that, although this incident was terrible, we've rarely seen that and "you're dealing with 17-22 YO's so that is bound to happen sometime".

So QQ for those of you that know/hear more than I do. I was away during a lotof the heat and, quite frankly, stayed away from it on purpose when I did have access.

Hennepin County has reviewed it twice and refuse to bring charges. I apologize for this next part, I certainly am not trying to offend anyone, just asking to try and understand this whole mess.

Was this really something these kids should be punished for or is it a case where the new AD is trying to look good by making an example? You can disagree on morals with what those guys did but it doesn't read as rape (and the DA seems to agree). It 'reads' more like she made a decision she was embarrassed of and wants to make amends with herself.

THIS IS SAID BASED ON THE LIMITED INFO I HAVE. I WILL COMPLETELY APOLOGIZE FOR THE BROAD GENERALIZATIONS IF I SEE/HEAR MORE INFO. The only info I've had is the Strib articles and the over sensationalism of ESPN.

It seems, and has been posted earlier, that the school reviewed it under some sort of code of conduct and found a reason to suspend the players, and probably whack some from school.

If Claeys is saying "it's bound to happen"....10 guys in a row having sex with the same girl is not "normal" behavior in any society. It's not "bound to happen". JMO

As Scott said, don't act like dogs in heat. Coach is eventually responsible for program control, isn't he??

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:37:21 AM)

I agree that it certainly isn't a form of moral conduct but it's not illegal. If they go "code of conduct" it's sort of a all encompassing veil of secrecy IMO. Where was the COC when it first happened?

It seems to me this is a lot like the AP situation. No charges/punishment until their is public uproar and then it's like "shit, we need to do something".

TC's defense of "awww shucks.... they're kids, what could I do" is lame but it's what I would expect out of someone lobbying for his job.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:39:39 AM)

Jeff, I don't think anyone should take offense to your post. The way this has played out is a complicated mess for the athletic department on several levels.

1. The Hennepin County Attorney reviewed twice and did not bring charges. Neither did they exonerate the players. Freeman's statement was that there was not enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. That's hardly a declaration of innocence.
2. The internal committee at the U concluded that the players were probably guilty. However they admit that they have a lower burden of proof than the criminal justice system. Their interviews with players and witnesses were done without presence of counsel and nobody was under oath.
3. There was also an underage potential recruit involved. Not just the players themselves.
4. There was the poor job the team did in stating their case for boycotting the bowl game. It came off as dismissive of violence against women.
5. Claeys followed up by making that idiotic tweet, saying how proud he was of his players after they threatened to boycott. This appears to be the tipping point for a lot of people on Claeys' future.
6. A petition was brought to the U athletic offices calling for Claeys to be fired and Coyle refused to meet with the group or accept the petition. They were then told that if they didn't leave the police would be called. This further riled up the argument that the U is soft on violence against women.

So with all of that said my opinion ... and this is just my opinion ... is that if the committee at the U found the students to be in violation of the university's standard of conduct and believe that these players sexually assaulted a woman and involved an underaged recruit, they should suspend and expel them as they see fit. Claeys is a bit more complicated. At first glance, you say that the coach can't keep tabs on what all 100 players on his roster are doing at all times. The problem is that he created a shit storm with his tweet. I don't think for one minute he is dismissive of violence against women. I think he made an oafish attempt at keeping his players from rebelling by sympathizing with them. He should have run it by somebody before tweeting. I think if Claeys stays on there will no doubt be protests at games next year and the U will face quite a public relations fiasco. The question is; does PR justify, firing Claeys. Matt raised a good point in terms of trying to get a quality HC with this going on. People are already talking about the Western Michigan HC, but he will be at the top of the list of every D1 school looking for a new HC. I don't know how realistic getting him is.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:43:30 AM)

Good stuff guys.
Tough calls.
My only apology would be to dogs in heat.
They don't really know better.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:52:13 AM)

Excellent info Tim. Much more then I had. The tweet was stupid, I just shook my head. I didn't realize that was one of the big things people were pissed about. Rightfully so, just didn't realize it was a hot point.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:53:35 AM)

Like I mentioned before. I 'expect' anyone in his position would be lobbying to stay. He'll never get a top 5 conference gig again at HC. It just seemed like a really lame one TBH.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 9:54:24 AM)

Several of the parties involved got suspended earlier in the season.
The people involved apparently felt this wasn't enough punishment.

Claeys allegedly signed off on more punishment, then turns around with the dumb Tweet. IMO, and it's also been posted in here, he lacks the skills to run a tight ship.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 12:00:42 PM)

Looks like Claeys chances of staying are shrinking by the minute. Now members of the board of regents are meeting with Kaler, Coyle and the university general counsel to discuss Claeys.

Cumulative halftime score of Iowa's last five bowl games: Iowa 10, opponents 108

The people down here in Hawkeye territory seem pretty miserable over their bowl ineptitude. Iowa has lost their last 5 bowl games, and they are the only team in nation to lose their last 4 (or more) bowl games. Some are even questioning whether Iowa made the right move when they extended his contract all the way out to 2025 after last year's undefeated regular season, since the contract apparently doesn't include incentives to win big games.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 3:10:00 PM)

You think we have a chance at the Western Michigan coach? I bet he can coach both defense and offense.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 3:17:09 PM)

I think it would take quite a selling job by Coyle and Kaler. The U will also have to pony up and pay a legitimate Big Ten coaches contract for a change.

Yep....apology to all dogs was needed.

Dogs in heat aren't encouraging their fellow dogs around them to keep it going.

All it would have taken is one player who was witnessing this disgusting display of behavior to simply tell the others to stop.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 3:33:42 PM)

That would have required one of them to stop recording it on their phones. Another thing dogs in heat don't do.

I'm not throwing rocks here from my glass house.
It's fun to rip on Iowa, but I do fully realize who I back.
I Yust better keep my big mouth shut. [:D]
