It's not just football. It's culture (and that is coming from a GenX guy [:-] ).

Ryan Buckingham -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 6:17:31 PM)

Why did someone have to "leak" the report to KSTP before Tracy Claeys and others were informed of the full investigation? The investigation was complete. I think Claeys made the statement that he did because the first announcement was something about how HE had decided to suspend the players. He didn't make that decision, but was assigned it. Coyle should have just made the decision and made the announcement without him assigning it to Claeys, and I think we can all deal with the consequences. Unless he just wanted to get rid of Claeys since this first happened and he could not do that until after the bowl game.

The cupboard is not bare for the next coach. I would hope that they can keep some of the assistants, except the ones who thought Mitch Leidner was the best option at QB.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 8:09:38 PM)

Glen Mason had some interesting comments. First he couldn't believe Claeys didn't demand to see the report when Coyle told him about the suspensions. Mason said he would never support an AD's decision to suspend without seeing it. His second point was that Claeys should have been with the players and nipped the boycot nonsense in the bud. He would have told the players, I've read the report and you're wrong. We're practicing tomorrow and anyone who doesn't show up won't play in the bowl game. Point three, Claeys definitely should have read the report before tweeting and that the tweet was a disaster. Mase even said some of what Claeys did borders on insubordination. All in all he thinks Claeys is very good with all things football, but the way he handled this shows why it is so tough to have your first head coaching job be at this level. He also didn't say whether he agreed with the firing or not.

“For Coach Claeys to stick by his team through his whole situation and be there for his players, and then for the administration to fire him, it’s sad,” said Leidner, who is from Lakeville. “And everybody feels the same way. It’s hard for me to think that another coach would want to come coach here with the way the administration has acted throughout this whole thing.”

“I feel bad for him once he gets here,” Leidner said of the next coach. “I feel bad he has to deal with what other coaches have had to deal with.”

“I think the university has deeper problems that have gone on for 50 years with the football program,” said former player and contributor Gary Hohman. “I think they are totally in denial from the president through Morrill Hall to the Board of Regents. And I think they have been. I think it’s a bigger picture than Tracy Claeys. I think it’s a cultural issue with the university. I think they want to take credit for being a Big Ten university, but in no way in the last 50 years have they made the commitment to football that’s necessary. I think it’s a much bigger issue than just Tracy Claeys.”

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 10:40:50 PM)

http://www.si.com/college-football/2017/01/03/minnesota-football-fires-tracy-claeys

Tracy Claeys has been fired, which was a Minnesota decision that required as much thought as ordering the Silver Butter Knife Steak at Murray’s or setting up near the polka stage at the late, great Nye’s Polonaise Room. He was a fledgling head coach with an 11–8 career record who backed players as they threatened a protest in support of other players who were entangled in an exceptionally unsavory sexual assault case. It turned out the protesting players had essentially no idea about the depth of the ugliness underpinning the cause they backed. When the specific allegations and Title IX reports came to light, the Gophers quickly squirreled away. Meanwhile, their head football coach had supported his team almost unequivocally, thumbing his nose at administrators, which meant a well-paid school employee publicly embarrassed the school that paid him well.

Stunning, really, that this plan did not work out so well for Tracy Claeys.

He ultimately neglected a few finer points: One, the athletic director, Mark Coyle, did not hire Claeys and probably wants to pick the guy who runs an operation worth a lot of money to his department. Two, Claeys’s buyout as Gophers coach was a relatively paltry $500,000. And three, all due respect, but he’s Tracy freaking Claeys and this is a Big Ten football job, and many qualified coaches would crawl through vats of boiling acid to take it.

Much more after this about the lurid past at the U.

Brad H -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2017 11:05:12 PM)

I would bring in the young guy (Fleck) from Western Michigan.

Such a sensitive situation---a good coach wouldn't let any playergo on twitter but he made that mistake himself. You have to choose your words very wisely.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/4/2017 8:45:48 AM)

The bottom line is that at a time when he really needed to lead, Claeys let the inmates run the asylum. I also liked that Coyle went deeper into the football aspect of it and pointed out that despite the bowl win, the Gophers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory a few times and missed out on a more prestigious bowl. I get the sense that Coyle knows football is the big prestige and revenue program in any university and he intends to treat it like one.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (1/4/2017 8:58:51 AM)

Not the first time that the actions of players have contributed to a coach's firing. The coach is the guy that needs to maintain control and when off the field issues are really bad - it reflects on him.

If players are stunned that their coach was fired, maybe they need to look around the locker room and point to some blame there.

I hope that whoever Coyle hires is one of those men that will not tolerate any level of behavior that ends up in a court room ... and that he happens to be a damn good coach too.

I never read the report...which I will never do. I heard that one player was the watch person for the lady (ies) and mentioned that this has been done here before. Pretty damn scary that it was becoming more of the norm for some of the players. I don't know how many but I do think the coach and the majority of the players didn't know about these activities, (God I hope so).

It also would not surprise me if it is/was happening at other universities. Football is treated like a religious cult at some universities and the U of MN doesn't put the players at as high of a pedestal as other universities (and even at that some seem pretty damn spoiled rotten and entitled at the U of MN).

Politicians covering their butts. Claeys is not a bad guy and it's pretty tough to put this whole situation on him. What's the chances he ever gets another job? That's a pretty tough penalty to pay for a group of young adults that had no self-control. Maybe he didn't handle it perfectly, but making him the fall guy is just wrong, IMO.

Administrators will always do what is best for administrators. They will frame it as a culture change and use all the right buzzwords, but it is always going to be about themselves.

Doogie just got Coach Kill on the Mackey & Judd radio show. He's pretty disappointed in how this was handled. But I wonder if he wants his job back?

Like I said all along, they both should have been fired for making Leidner their quarterback the last 3.5 years. If you can't find somebody better than that, you aren't trying very hard at recruiting or can't recognize talent. That kid was brutal.

Leidner was better than Philip Nelson his first 2 years (or Leidner's junior and senior year) but he was hurt/played thru foot injury most of last year 2 years. Doesn't excuse how he sucked for a lot of this year.

Here is what he had done after 2015:

I could easily see Claeys getting a DII or 1A head coaching job. I don't see this as making Claeys the fall guy. At a time when he needed to take control of his team and keep them from doing something stupid, he sat back and let them do something stupid. That was the biggest thing Glen Mason couldn't wrap his head around when he was interviewed by Bererrio yesterday. He said Claeys should have been with his players to lock it down and keep them from something so idiotic. And if that wasn't bad enough, he poured gasoline on the bonfire of stupidity.

Mark Dienhart is an example a fall guy in the Clem Haskins scandal. Mac Boston as VP of athletics set up the athletic department in a way that Clem was insulated from any meddling by the AD. When the scandal was exposed, Clem retired to a hefty buy out, Boston got promoted and Dienhart got thrown under the bus.

He was not better than Nelson. Kill just placed a higher priority on running than passing. Nelson led the Gophers to a bowl game in 2013 only to get benched for Leidner in the 1st quarter. That's why he transferred.

Anyone up on Boll?
Is he sewed up and happy at Wyoming?
Aren't we a bigger player than them?
Isn't he what we need?
A program constructor from the bottom up.
The facilities and the surroundings will soon be top notch.
Find a guy for the long haul

I don't think Nelson was any better or worse than Leidner...he did get screwed that year though. Leidner was basically a FB playing QB and Nelson was the better passer. I just don't think we had talented enough WR to utilize the passing game (at that time).

I meant I thought he was in his 60s...he is 58. I am all for it. 7 years of him would be good and stabilize the program. Get him or Fleck.
