You'll get past them, Craig.  As I said, it will be ugly because the Giants are sure to steamroll your weak OL and Favre will throw picks, but Eli will be ATROCIOUS in this game as your corners mug all day long.  The real Eli will come out.  No way can he be "decent' 3 weeks in a row.

Cheesehead Craig -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/14/2008 3:15:32 PM)

The pass protection has been very solid all season and I don't believe they will put nearly as much pressure on Favre as they did on Romo.  The Pack run more short routes than Dallas does and thus limit Favre's exposure.  Plus, part of the regular Packers offense is keeping a TE and RB in to pass block and if there's no rush, they go out on delayed routes.  That's why I think the Pack can handle the pass rush of the Giants.

I doubt Favre throws more than 1 pick vs the G-men.  He seems to be due for one though.

We need to get past the Giants first.  They are a better team than the one we faced in Jersey in week 2.  But then again, so are we.

I see a 33-23 Packers win unless the weather is real bad

I don't get the part about the "weak offensive line."  Favre was only sacked 15 times this season.  That's the second lowest amount in his entire career (12 in 2004).  That's pretty damn good considering he was sixth in the NFL in pass attempts, meaning they weren't handing it off a lot.  (Remember the non-existent running game?)

And maybe we should wait and see what happens Sunday before we start speculating on by how many points the Packers will lose to New England in the Super Bowl.  Frankly, I also think the Packers would lose to NE, but I still think it's better to lose the SB than not to reach it at all.

Steve Lentz -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/14/2008 8:55:23 PM)

I too like the Packers OL. They will beat the Giants and probably compete better than anyone else can against the Pats.

djskillz -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/14/2008 9:15:39 PM)

I still don't think their OL is all that good.  Our division is just really bad for pass rushers this year.  That's a LOT of Packers' games right there.

I think their OL is getting better and should be even better next year, but I still don't know if they can contain the Giants.  Though it's a solid point that Grant will probably get involved on screens, etc.

Doesn't really matter.  As I said, I think the Packers will win.  I just think it will be an incredibly ugly win.  I can't see Eli winning at Lambeau at all.  He is a horrendous QB.

Our OL will be fine as long as we can keep ol' 73 in there...[:D]

And Dustin you know Don and Paulette Russell from North Pole, Alaska?

djskillz, c'mon, Kerney had a pretty good year sackwise and he was shut down completely. Along with the fact that Grant ran for over 200 yards against a "D" boasting 3  Pro Bowlers.
The O line dominated Seattle's line. Would you at least agree with that?

You think anytime the Pack excels it's a sign of inferior play on the other team's part it would seem.

djskillz -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/14/2008 10:14:44 PM)

No, they played very well against Seattle.  I fully grant you that.  But the Giants have as good of a DL as anyone at getting pressure.  It's really not a knock against the Pack.  I just think the Giants' DL is that good.

Ray, great stuff.  You know I love Daryn.  That's partly what I was referring to in saying that I think the Packers OL WILL be good.  I really like your young guys, including Daryn.  But I'm biased there of course.

On the Russells, I think I do, or at least my parents do (who are still up there).  That is VERY familiar.  And if they're Lutherans, then they're sure to know them.  I forget; do you have NP connections?

The Packers had a free Pep Rally on Friday Night - 15,000 people were there including the Russell's - their son Ryan went to school with Daryn Colledge.   You may want to send your parents the article:  http://www.620wtmj.com/news/local/13729492.html

I know it's kind of hokey, there's not too many places where 15,000  people will come sit outside for 3 hours in a cold stadium - but we're Packer fans.  Gotta wonder if they'll do it again this week when its below zero...

Lane Meyer -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/14/2008 10:21:59 PM)

I think the Giant's D line is that good as well. (Certainly when taking the sacks stat into account.  Much like the Packer O line with regard to sacks.) They will be a large point of emphasis I'm sure.

I thought you'd said that you didn't think the Pack O line was that good, sorry.

That's great Ray.  Thanks.  Yes, I'm sure I know them now.  I knew Ryan a little bit.  If I remember correctly, he's my little brother's age (2 years younger).  Daryn was in between us but was more friends with my little brother.  I was a baseball/basketball guy and my brother was a football guy.

Don't know if you've seen me mention it before, but Daryn is really an amazing story to me.  He was never that big of a kid and I didn't ever think he'd be anything.  We had much better athletes than him in the area.  But he REALLY bulked up at Boise State with hard work.  He gained something like 80 lbs of muscle in a year or 2 span.  Amazing.

And his recruiting story is pretty cool too.  If I recall correctly, Buck Nystrom, who is an Alaskan legend as the best/winningest state football coach ever and was a GREAT guy (went to my church, knew him very well, died young of heart complications) was sending in tape of the best athlete I ever saw in my lifetime, Doug Lamb, who I played baseball/basketball with and against and was all-state in all 3 sports, plus track.  His life got sidetracked by drugs/grades, but apparently Colledge caught their eyes on tape and they signed him.  The rest is history.  I'm pretty sure that's the full story; I can ask my brother to remind me.

Definitely root for the guy.  He's kind of Mark Schlereth II to me.

I did, and I shouldn't have.  You are right.  I think they're solid, just not "all that" when talking about the Giants especially.

My apologies.

That's a neat story - thanks for sharing.   Almost makes on believe in destiny...  just finished making a copy of the Packers game for my son - in the post game interview,  Favre gave props to Daryn Colledge - said DC's had a tough year but he "played awesome today" - nice to see him single Colledge out like that on national TV!

My youngest son is a HS Football Coach - so I have an appreciation for what those folks do ---  and I'm privileged to be able to do the local high schools coaching video on Friday nights!   Nothing better than Friday Night Lights for this old guy!

John Childress -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/15/2008 11:39:42 AM)

the Giants got 1 whole sack in the Week 2 matchup

Of course they were still learning the "Philly defense" from Spags so I expect that number to go up.  I don't expect their defensive line to dominate the Packers like it did the Cowboys.  As has been pointed out, Dallas runs longer routes.  Also, if the turf is bad on Sunday it will be hard for the DL to get footing.

djskillz -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/15/2008 3:25:48 PM)

Ray, great minds buddy, great minds....

Friday Night Lights is a GREAT show.  Great actors too.  And the eye candy doesn't hurt.

That's the ONE good thing about the writers' strike.  It looks like the show will be saved because they had episodes in the can already and are doing well.

Here is exactly what Im talking about you Packer fans......Poor kid deserves better than this!!!!  Unbelievable!!

Father arrested for forcing son to wear Green Bay Packers jersey

January 17, 2008

PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) -- Upset that his 7-year-old son wouldn't wear a Green Bay Packers jersey during the team's playoff victory Saturday, a man restrained the boy for an hour with tape and taped the jersey onto him.
Mathew Kowald was cited for disorderly conduct in connection with the incident with his son at their home in Pardeeville, Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department said. Pardeeville is about 30 miles north of Madison.

The 36-year-old Kowald was arrested Monday after his wife told authorities about the incident. Kowald was taken to the county jail and held until Wednesday, when he pleaded no contest, paid a fine of $186 and was released.
Kowald's wife filed a restraining order Wednesday, so Kowald will not be able to have contact with his family, Smith said. Smith said other domestic issues have surfaced, though he wouldn't elaborate.
The boy refused to wear the jersey Saturday, when the Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks in a playoff game, Smith said. Smith said the incident sounded strange when reported at first, but the mother took pictures with her cell phone and that type of evidence is difficult to dispute.
Kowald, contacted later Wednesday by the Portage Daily Register, said the incident started as a joke. His son challenged him by saying he wouldn't root for the Packers. When he tied the boy up, the youngster was laughing while his wife took pictures, he said.
"Then he couldn't get out and he got upset and that's it. It lasted a minute," he said. "I didn't mean no harm, and he knows that, but I haven't been able to tell him that."
District Attorney Jane Kohlwey said there wasn't enough evidence to support felony charges.
"I wouldn't agree with what he did, but legally a parent can restrain a child," she said. "I have no proof of emotional damage. ... I have to follow the law.

I was going to post this same story.  What the hell is the matter with some people?  Sheesh the kid is 7.  Let him grow into being a Packer Backer.  Let him grow into the love of the Packers.  Don't force it upon him or you might find him rooting for another team like the Vikings...or <gasp> the Bears.

Of course not,  but how many fans of other teams have abused their 7 year olds because they refused to wear a team jersey on game day?

I have a 7 year old...he isn't terribly interested in football yet.  When I was 7 I couldn't have cared less.  When I was 12, I started to love it.  Never would have occurred to my father to force me to wear a jersey at 7 because he knew my interest wasn't there.  If he had abused me (he never even came close), I would either have learned to hate the Vikings...or football in general.

This is foolish BS.  BTW... I didn't limit it to Packer fans in my post.  Read my post again if you don't believe me.

Lynn G. -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/17/2008 8:06:07 AM)

The key to the story is the reference to other domestic issues and the fact that this was bad enough that the wife got a restraining order.

One of the things I learned when I used to participate on the Packer board is that domestic abuse goes up exponentially after a Packer loss.  This was from a PACKER fan admitting it - so not something just made up by a rival or anything.  He said that emergency rooms go on a kind of alert status after the Packers lose games because they expect to see an increase in battered women coming in.

Another Packer fan admitted that it's been shown that absenteeism from work goes way up on Mondays after a Packer loss too.  I imagine the whole thing would make an interesting sociological study - across the NFL fan base.  The question would be - "How does your team affect your day to day life and relationships."

Perhaps a psychological study is more appropriate.  Or a criminal investigation.

If what you describe is true, that is sick.  Packers lose and domestic violence goes up.  I wonder if a Packer loss is also an effective defense in a court of law.

Cheesehead Craig -> RE: RE:The Packers (1/17/2008 9:26:03 AM)

It's a sad story about a stupid dad who deserves to be in jail for abusing his kid.  Team affiliation and a reflection on the fans of that team doesn't enter into the picture.

Well, yeah I believe you, dont need to read your post again. By the same token, (in my best hoiseth imitition), my post never singled you out.

Your right, it is BS to a degree. My statement was more directed at Eds opening of his post "you Packer Fans". Nothing personal on Ed, I actually believe I know his intent, but like I say, feeling a little hoiseth today and taking PC to a disruptive level. [:D]

For the record, I wont actually  call this a child abuse case based solely on what was posted regarding the story. Personal experience, I can easily see how things transpired according to his version. Who here saw the evidence? The video? Was it recorded from start to end, or just a snippet of horseplay between dad and son that for whatever reason took a bad turn? A vengeful wife? I wasnt there so I dont know.

All said, with my original post being tongue in cheek, I hope most here would agree that this probably isnt the type of story that should be used to judge a fan base.
