Goes to show you that it's not what you spend...it's what you spend it on.

The Dodgers’ expensive outfield logjam was a well-known issue entering the offseason, and while the team’s new-look front office has already unloaded Matt Kemp in a trade with the Padres, Andre Ethier remains in Los Angeles. Ethier has voiced an openness to a trade so that the he can receive regular at-bats with another club, and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is now reporting that the Dodgers are willing to pay as much as half of the $56MM remaining on Ethier’s contract to facilitate a deal.

2:15pm: Coke’s deal will pay him $2.25MM if he makes the Major League club with the opportunity to earn up to $900K more via incentives, reports MLive.com’s Chris Iott (Twitter links). The incentives kick in beginning with his 35th appearance of the season, Iott adds.

9:08am: The Cubs have agreed to sign left-handed reliever Phil Coke to a minor league deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (Twitter links). Coke turned down at least one MLB offer, per the report.

Pirates going with matte finish on batting helmets this season instead of glossy. very nice. Twins should do this as well.

Best thing they can do for the helmets is keep the pine tar off

Stiegs' favorite/original scruffy/mlb slob has a contract for now.

2:19pm: Beimel would earn $1.5MM if he breaks camp with the club and can earn more via incentives, per Grant.

1:03pm: Beimel’s deal is an MLB contract but is not guaranteed, tweets Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

12:41pm: The Rangers have signed left-handed reliever Joe Beimel to a one-year, Major League contract, executive vice president of Rangers communications John Blake announced today (on Twitter). Beimel is a client of agent Joe Sroba.

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The folks in the Rangers' front office would be forgiven for feeling a little bit uneasy these days. After an injury-plagued 2014 season, even minor injuries are cause for major concern.

Especially when one of them happens to the staff ace.

Three-time All-Star Yu Darvish was headed for an MRI exam Friday after leaving his spring training debut the previous day with tightness in his right triceps. Darvish experienced the pain while warming up in the bullpen, and it did not go away over the course of 12 pitches.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/7/2015 1:35:13 PM)

The MRI on Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish's right triceps showed a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, the team announced Saturday.

Team physician Dr. Keith Meister and the Rangers have discussed Tommy John surgery, according the team. In the release, Darvish said he is looking into other options as well.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/9/2015 3:47:56 PM)

Cliff Lee may be next on the surgery list.

Lots of optimism in Rockies camp
Morneau excited, and he looks good.
Tulo ready to roll again
Very athletic. Need to stay healthy.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/10/2015 3:47:06 PM)

Clifford has a torn flexor tendon.

Thanks for a good career dude.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/10/2015 3:51:01 PM)

The Washington Nationals’ starting rotation may have made them a heavy favorite heading into the 2015 season, but with centerfielder Denard Span now the second of their three starting outfielders to have his availability for Opening Day placed in doubt due to injury, the cracks are already beginning to show in their mighty edifice.

Span had surgery to repair a right core muscle injury Monday morning and is likely looking at a four- to six-week recovery period before he can resume baseball activities. Given that, it seems a near certainty that Span will open the season on the disabled list, where he may be joined by rightfielder Jayson Werth, who had surgery to repair the acromioclavilcular (AC) joint in his right shoulder in early January, a surgery which was said to have a two- to three-month recovery time.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/10/2015 3:52:01 PM)

Jimmy Graham trade to Seattle.

Did not see that coming.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/10/2015 3:52:26 PM)

Frank Gore cold feet on Philly apparently will go to Indy instead. Smart

Very somber in an interview on MLB
Hits these guys hard when they don't go out on their own terms.
Pretty damn good career

After a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, Cliff Lee will attempt to pitch through a torn flexor tendon for the Phillies, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters including Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News (links to Twitter). A surgical option (not Tommy John) would be the next step if Lee experiences discomfort.

Amaro says that the team is “not terribly optimistic” that such a surgical result can be avoided.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/10/2015 4:42:07 PM)

Indians righty Gavin Floyd again has a stress fracture in his right elbow and will be out indefinitely, the club announced (Twitter links). Treatment options are still being assessed, but surgery is a possibility.

4:22pm: Yelich will earn $49.5MM over seven years, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. That makes the deal the second largest ever for a player in the one-to-two year service class.

3:53pm: The deal includes one option year, tweets Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. The total value is $50MM, says Spencer, though he notes that he is not sure whether that amount includes the option value. Frisaro now tweets that he hears the deal will top the $41MM guarantee that Anthony Rizzo received from the Cubs.

3:17pm: The Marlins are closing in on a long-term extension with outfielder Christian Yelich, MLB Network’s Mike Lowell tweets. Yelich is expected to take home a $40MM guarantee over seven years when the deal is completed, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports on Twitter.

Yelich maintains a combined .285/.365/.400 slash over his 933 total big league plate appearances. Batting near the top of the Marlins lineup last year, Yelich racked up 21 steals and nine home runs.

As impressive as Yelich is on the offensive side, he figures to deliver plenty of defensive value moving forward as well. He was awarded the National League’s Gold Glove for left field last year, and defensive metrics back that up: when playing in the corner, Yelich was worth 12.8 runs above average per UZR and racked up 13 Defensive Runs Saved.

So........a 23 year old w/modest numbers gets a 7 year deal

Tying up $$$$ long term, betting on improvement.

Why is it so bad to lock Dozier up for 4 or 5 years, now that he has 2+ years of service??

Don't get it.

Yeah, they have prospects that COULD be better. COULD

Maybe.

Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/18/2015 4:35:58 PM)

Ryan Howard has become such dead weight, Philly allegedly will throw in 50 Mill if a team takes him off their hands.

How the mighty have fallen.

Moe Vaughn-ish

Stacey King -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/18/2015 4:54:30 PM)

Jacoby Ellsbury underwent precautionary MRI; low-grade mild oblique strain. No baseball activity for next seven days.

Yanks fans get 6 more years of that...at 21M per.

2014-20: $21,142,857.15 annually
2021:$21M club option ($5M buyout)
full no-trade protection

SoMnFan -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (3/18/2015 11:51:54 PM)

Big brouhaha in Chicago between Borass and the Cubs Brass.
Over the typical, sending the bonus baby down to the minors to delay his clock.
Seems to me we've been thru that a time or two.
I heard today it'd only be something like nine games .... if so, then I'd be ok with it.
Hate how those rules get in the way of common sense. Its no longer whos best etc ... its all about the contracts and time of service etc.
Not a big fan of the business side of the game.
Oh, and get the hell off my lawn.
