Mr. Ed -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/26/2013 2:43:45 PM)

Who will be the next "leader" of baseball?

2:21pm: Major League Baseball has issued a press release confirming Selig's retirement. Within the release, Selig offered the following statement:

“It remains my great privilege to serve the game I have loved throughout my life. Baseball is the greatest game ever invented, and I look forward to continuing its extraordinary growth and addressing several significant issues during the remainder of my term.

I am grateful to the owners throughout Major League Baseball for their unwavering support and for allowing me to lead this great institution. I thank our players, who give me unlimited enthusiasm about the future of our game. Together we have taken this sport to new heights and have positioned our national pastime to thrive for generations to come. Most of all, I would like to thank our fans, who are the heart and soul of our game.”

1:04pm: Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig will announce his formal retirement later today, according to the New York Daily News' investigative reporting team of Teri Thompson, Michael O'Keeffe, Christian Red and Nathaniel Vinton. Selig plans to announce that the 2014 season will be his final as league commissioner, according to the report (Twitter link).

Without doing an internet search, who are the realistic candidates? I imagine it has to be someone much more owner-friendly than player-friendly. Sandy Alderson, Joe Torre, George Will? Doesn't seem like a good fit for Torre, but I know he's something important in the MLB organization right now. How about Andy MacPhail? Maybe I've been under a rock lately, but I can't remember hearing a buzz of who the next commissioner will be after Selig steps down. Yeah, we heard Costas for awhile...but that was like 10 years ago...and nobody really thought that was going to happen.

GoGo show-boated and a ruckus ensued. And the stinkin' catcher that stopped him from crossing home didn't even get tossed.

McCann shoulda been tossed.  But I think it proves that the ump thought Gomez's showboating, while within the rules, was way over the line of proper baseball etiquette.

Now THAT'S showboating, Terry Ryan. I still haven't seen good evidence of Sano's supposed showboating.  What I did see was hardly anything worse than a normal reaction to a HR - watch it for a couple seconds, and trot - big deal.

I thought the very same thing as I watched the clip moments ago. Has Gomez received anything more than a verbal reprimand for his actions? I understand Sano is a minor leaguer and you can afford to be a bit tighter with them....but the Twins overreaction to it was absurd.

In addition to that, I also wondered: What would Mauer have done in that situation? Would have had the guts to do something along the lines of what McCann did? I think we all know the answer to that one.

You mean not make a complete ass of himself like McCann?  Agree, he would not have done that.

Those braves won't put up with being shown up. Ass clowns.

Coomer thinks its awesome what McCann did, says it should be done more. How stupid.

Dave E -> RE: MLB General Information PT 4 (9/27/2013 11:23:34 AM)

McCann has done it more in the last three weeks than anyone in history -- and the Braves have responded by playing worse than they have all season.  No thanks.

Would allow us to move Pinto for a lousy reliever.  [:D]

Mariners finish ahead of Twins, won't keep the manager:

The 2007 AL Manager of the Year, Wedge informed the club Friday that he would not return after serving out the final three games of his three-year contract. Under Wedge’s leadership the M’s finished at or near the bottom of the AL West every year.

Wedge told reporters he felt he and the team’s front office were not headed in the same direction.

@GregJohnsMLB
Wedge said it became "painfully obvious" he and Mariners weren't moving forward in same direction.

Gardumb and the Twins front office ARE moving in the same direction - backwards.

Make me understand how he looked like an ass. What do you say he should have done? Maybe put his head down and stand off to the side while Gomez crosses the plate screaming at his guy? Is that what you would do? Really??

I guess you're right. Mauer would do nothing, but about 90% of the other catchers in baseball probably would have done something along the lines of what McCann did.

Let him cross the plate and then get in his face.

90%? Really? It's never happened in baseball history, but 90% of catchers would have done it? OK.

Note how the Braves responded to this display of "leadership" -- they crapped the bed the rest of the game and lost. Way to fire up the team, McCann!

These wonderful coaches who can get after it, sure did a bang-up job w/Liriano when he was in MN.

Their ability to improve players should be seriously questioned.
