15,258 at the game.

For reference, the NBA finals this year averaged 20,000.

Not too shabby.

And an excellent post game analysis from Swish Appeal:

http://www.swishappeal.com/2011/10/3/2445954/wnba-finals-game-one-atlanta-dream-minnesota-lynx-balance#storyjump

Good stuff. I love this summation :

quote:

Regardless of how imbalanced the Dream were, last night just wasn't their ideal style of play - even when they were winning - which is predicated on multiple players going hard to the basket and forcing opponents into a series of mismatches and difficult rotations. And in getting de Souza back, they will match up a lot more evenly with a Lynx team that was the best in the league.

Yet just noting all that in a situation where the Lynx once again adjusted to their opponent mid-game underscores a point that makes the Lynx so tough to beat: it's not clear what the Lynx' ideal style of play is because they can adapt to so many circumstances.

The coaches Reeve, Petersen & Patterson have put in the work to keep their team prepared for every challenge. And beyond their athleticism the top 6 players (starters & Wiggins) are really high IQ basketball players and the team as a whole has formed into the ‘ultimate team’ type of team. So for me that bold part is the ultimate compliment to this team and Cheryl Reeve.

Swish Appeal is a very good site. The Game Day threads usually have well over 300 posts during the games.

WTF?  Best record in the league, one of the best 6 or 8 records of all time, but no MVP and only two players on the All-WNBA team?  That just seems weird to me, especially given that we had 5 all stars.  It's like the voters said the team has too much talent to pick a single MVP, but not enough to talent for more than one first team all-leaguer.  I just don't get it.

Whalen just about right but Penny Taylor and Cappie Poindexter with more votes than Augustus is amazingly messed up. Seimone this season was at least the equal of DT when you factor in how efficient Augustus is vs the volume scoring of DT.

Glad someone else said it.
Its almost like HS all-conference voting ... where everyone gets recognized.
As dominant as the Lynx were all season, they deserved better. Much better. You don't dominate the league without having much better players than most.

I think the players selected from other teams are very deserving too. Brunson could have been selected as well, though.

Tonight's game is crucial to the Lynx. DeSousa returns to Atlanta after missing game 1 to play for the Brazillian National team in the America's tournament. She led Brazil to the championship and was the tournament MVP. If the Lynx go to Atlanta at 1-1 they will be in trouble.

Another shaky start, but suddenly Seimone is starting to look like she's going to take over.

And Adair kept us in the game and did her best to foul out ATL all by herself.

24 points on 8-9 by McCoughtry.

On the heels of her scoring 27 in the 2nd half of Game 1.

We should maybe consider guarding her....

Rough game for Maya. She's getting killed by the refs, but she needs to be smarter.

Down 5 after 3.

Need one of those big Lynx 4ths where they really take control and step on the neck of the opponent.
