Offensively the matchups favor the Mercury. Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor and Candice Dupree win the matchups at the 2, &4 over Augustus, Moore and Brunson. ...

Well the Phoenix Mercury don't (and didn't) have much of an advantage here.

Truth, (or well my opinion )Taurasi on her best day & Augustus on her's are a wash on the offensive end. DT tends to be more of a volume shooter but if they aren't falling, she'll attack the basket. 'Mone is just so efficient in how she scores, its crazy. She has the tendency to put up her points off fewer shots. Now healthy she is comfortable attacking the basket some too. Both high IQ ballers. But, Edge goes to Augustus on the defensive end. She's more invested in playing tough D then DT has been.

Penny Taylor I would give the edge over Maya Moore on experience alone. Maya offensively has to make Penny work on the defensive end but Maya often can have trouble defending Penny. She is (usually) a very good offensive player so the edge to Phoenix here. On Thursday nights not sure it could be picked up on TV but Wiggins played 'big' time D on Taylor when Phx tried their "big" lineup. Wiggs is quicker than Moore and never let Taylor get comfortable. (Wiggins played huge in game 1).

Candice Dupree can be a really smooth offensive player, Rebekkah Brunson not as offensively gifted. But Dupree’s defensive game doesn’t match her offensive porous. Brunson is more athletic more physical and a much better defender and rebounder then Dupree. Brunson absolutely got in Dupree’s head & took her out of the mix. Denying any passes that might come her way & never letting her get comfortable.

Bottom line, the Lynx play great ‘team defense’ and generally the Mercury don’t play much D at all, it’s a crap shoot with them. The Lynx are kind of a nightmare match up for the Mercury because as Geno Auriemma said on TV last Thursday, the Lynx have the ability to play Phoenix “style” of play, the run & gun, push the tempo just as well if not better than the Mercury. The Lynx like to play that way too & Whalen (& Wiggins) can push it. So the question becomes, can Phoenix defend? The Lynx have shown to be the superior rebounding and defensive team.

Phoenix is sure to come out guns blazing at home so the Lynx will need to match that energy. If the Lynx don’t let ‘bad’ calls get to them or allow Phx to get into their heads and focus on playing their game, let their defense trigger their offense, they can come out of game #2 with a win. I really think they will. Should be fun.

The Lynx are holding another viewing party at Champps in Minnetonka(Ridgedale) for the game for those interested.

I'm pretty sure Tim agrees with you, since that part you quoted he was strictly talking about offense.

Later in that same post he writes about the huge defensive advantage we have.

True, gottcha. Sorry TJSweens, I locked in on the offensive match ups. I just felt the edge there is slight; but true, in Phx favor with DT = SA for me. I was just kind of waxing, breaking things down looking at the all-around play of the indivduals. The biggest variable being Taylor vs. the rookie Moore. Nice Moore (with help) won the battle in game #1

I think to some degree Phoenix's offensive stats are fueled by a higher number of possessions. They play run and gun ball and very little defense (I'm being generous with that one). As far as all around individual performances I think Simone Augustus is hands down the best player on the floor. She and DT are both top scorers, but DT's defense is non existent while Augustus responded to Reeves challenge in the off season and made herself a top flight defensive player. Taurasi gets the name recognition because of her U-Conn legend and scoring titles, but I would take Augustus over her any day of the week.

Those who could care less about the Lynx will be pissy about this but to bad Looks like the Star Trib will amp up its coverage of the Lynx as they chase a championship.

As we sat down to assess our coverage plan for the playoff season, Sports Editor Glen Crevier was already ahead of me when I expressed the opinion that we needed to cover the Lynx with the same spirit as if it were the Twins or the Vikings headed into the playoffs. "In a city starved for a sports winner, we are treating the Lynx as a big story," Crevier said, noting that several of the Lynx stars are among the best women players in the world.

It was Beautiful. I don't see how Indiana or Atlanta can match up with us. Inexperience was the knock on us but doesn't seem to be bothering us anymore.

Inexperience? Heck, Taj takes care of that all by herself. Whalen and Brunson have a wee bit of playoff experience, too.

So I guess Augustus. And all the rookie Moore has is 4 years playing win-or-go-home NCAA tourneys.

Yeah... I can see that inexperience with high-pressure games could be a problem.

Inexperience as a team in the playoffs. The Lynx players coming into this years playoffs had not played one playoff game together. I know that Whalen has playoff experience with the sun. And I know that Taj has been playing since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

As Aureama said the Lynx can match the Mercury in up tempo basketball. The Mercury on the other hand can't play defense. I am not at all surprised by the 2 game sweep or the margins of victory. The Lynx were the worst possible match up for them. The one team that they couldn't simply outscore.

I gotta say, up until this year I haven't ever watched the Lynx play.  I've kept tabs on them from afar because they are a Minnesota team, but never watched.  This year, I watched some due to the "Maya" factor.  They play as a team, for each other, and are very good to boot.  Kudos to them and I hope we take it all, almost there.  GET EM LYNX!

They're more fun to watch than they've ever been. They just play a really entertaining brand of basketball - and its very much a team game.

Brunson makes first team all defense. Taj is left off both 1st and 2nd teams.

Brunson clearly got it for her rebounding, but Taj was the key to our defense which was #2 in the league in PPG and Opp FG%.

How do the Lynx vs. Dream matchups look? Did they get in because the league MVP got hurt for Indiana?

Yes, indeed. The Viking and Gopher football teams could not be any worse than they are now.
