From Stop-n-Pop at Canis:

quote:

The world is a complicated place right now. Everything seems to mean something else and, more often than not, even the largest and most obvious things in front of our noses are accessible at only the most impossible angles.

For me, the thing that I will remember the most from this year's Lynx championship run is that it was an uncomplicated thing that did not need to be dressed up in cynicism, needless extrapolation, or mindless fluff. The team was drawn up out of basketball central casting: A hard-nosed, no-nonsense coach who has it hitting on all cylinders--pre-game game planning, mental preparation, in-game adjustments, you name it; a home-grown point guard who plays like Steve Nash with a chip on his shoulder (i.e. rebounding and attempted defense); a silky smooth 2 guard returning from a career-threatening injury who can score from anywhere on the court while letting her opponent know that there is nothing she can do to stop it; an All-World rookie who is the prototype athlete for her position and whose willingness to do whatever it takes to win inspired her older teammates; a double-double dirty worker at the 4 whose early-season play got this thing off on the right track; a been-there/done-that vet to lead the way in the locker room, post season and the paint; a former college star adjusting to life as an energetic 6th woman; and a youthful bench full of inconsistent and promising players who always seem to come through with a big moment exactly when it is needed. If she exists, I swear they'll find a way to draft Jenny Chitwood.

If you love basketball, you know these stories; you know these players. They don't need to be dressed up in any way, shape or form.

For me, the fun part about this season was that it gave me something basketball-related to share with my friends and family. I got to be a fan again. There were no notes or game wraps. I just sat there with my wife, daughters, and friends and enjoyed world class basketball while being reminded of why I fell in love with the sport in the first place, way back in the 80s with Larry and Magic.

This team and season stands on its own.

We could use Minnyme's passion in some of the other sports threads now that the Lynx's successful season is over. There's an awesome Gophers football game going on right now.

WAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOO!

Way to go Lynx!  You could definitely see some tired players out there, but we hung in and did it.  As much flack as Glen Taylor takes, kuddos to him for sticking with the Lynx and giving them the attention when it was all over.  Seimone and Maya are both fierce competitors with a sense of humility and graciousness, the post game showed their true class and humbleness.   Cheers to a great season and even better finish!

From our bench Adair, Wiggins, and Wright are all pretty good. I am also confident that Harris will be good too. We will add a top four draft pick next season if that pick can make the team. Of the starters Taj has to start slowing down a bit. I think Whalen's best years are behind her but she should be good for a few more seasons. Augustus has a three year window to win an MVP. Houston is a solid player but will not see the light of day here. Brunson is just such an excellent player. Nothing she doesn't do well and she is in amazing physical condition. The big question is how good can Maya Moore be. Does she have first team WNBA potential. MVP potential. If so the Lynx could win a majority of the titles for the next six seasons. What you all think about the future of the Lynx as long as the league survives.

Vikings going to honor Lynx today. Cool thing to do. Don't think Fox will cover it for us though

Whalen will be with Rosen tonight if anyone is interested. Not sure of time since CBS has late game and pushes back all program starts

I agree with all that except Whalen. She's only 29 and has a game that is not based on smarts more than athleticism. I'd say she has 3-4 prime years left.

Agreed. She was top 5 in MVP voting THIS year. She has some prime years left in her. My guess is Houston and Hornbuckle will be gone. Wiggins is a restricted FA and could have a bigger role on another team, but she seems to happy with her role on this team.

The Lynx win a title, get honored at the Vikings game and the Vikings finally win. Coincidence? Let's not forget the Wild winning their season opener.

I knew it would upset people with my saying Lyndsays best seasons were behind her but I believe it is true. She has been #2 in the MVP voting and #5. I don't see her ever making the top five again. Super quick PGs like Lindsey Harding give her trouble. Other teams will figure out ways to exploit her weakness no matter how small her weakness is. I see her as being quite good for another three years but not an MVP candidate again. Not meant to be a slight just the way I see it.

The WNBA in general frowns on PGs as MVP candidates. And super quick PGs give everyone trouble. Lindsay's game is built so much more on savvy than sheer athleticism that she should continue to "age well"/

Really? In the finals Whalen held Harding to her lowest numbers in the playoffs. He regular season games against Whalen were even lower.

Do you mean " A game that is based on smart more than athleticism"?  It didn't make sense to me the way it was stated, in that as a player gets older, the athleticism takes a hit, but the smarts can compensate.

Yes. There is an extra "not" in there. It should've read:

She's only 29 and has a game that is based on smarts more than athleticism.

I've seen exactly 2 WNBA games in my life and they were the last 2 played.  Are the championship celebrations normally that dull?  I realize it was on Atl's court but that seemed bush league.

I'm surprised there wasn't one lone balloon falling from the ceiling that read "suck it MN".

You would think the league would step up and have some type of celebration for them.  I didn't expect Atl to mob them with anything but come on.

You are far too intertwining "MVP candidate" with "best years behind". A PG has never won the MVP award. The league awards scorers. Only.

But let's look beyond MVP voting to Lindsay's 2011 season:

13.6 PPG (2nd best of her career. High is 14)
.511 FG% (best of her career, previous was .468)
.405 3pt% (best of her career, previous was .351)
5.9 APG (best of her career, previous was 5.6)
2.21 TO (3rd best of her career)

She just had the best statistical year of her career, and she's the glue of the team.

I thought I heard that the Lynx forgot to cut the nets! Hopefully, the celebrations today more than made up for that.

I do believe that an NCAA championship for the local women would have been a bigger deal, but I could be wrong about that.
