Ladies are going to have to step up BIG Time for us. We should make the playoffs on the strength of WHalen, Moore, and Augustus but don't have enough firepower the way it looks right now to advance.

As long as we make the playoffs we should have plenty of firepower once we get there. We just likely won't have homecourt throughout.

Agreed and I think they'll still have a chance to finish the deal. We know they'll have it tough though in the short to mid term w/a 21 yr old rookie starting in Brunson’s place. Was nice to see Damiris Dantas play so well in her debut. I was told despite the language barrier making communication more challenging, she just really has a good understanding of the game & high b-ball IQ. Hopefully she can keep it up when Dev gets back. Her Brazilian interpreter leaves this wk so well see how things go.

And folks have to remember until Monnie & Dev get back, our bench is made up of just 4; 1 vet newcomer, 1 PG in her 2nd year and 2 rookies. Playoff order doesn’t matter to me as long as we can get Brunson back by early Aug before the playoffs. Then l expect they can win games on the road as they always have.

At some point, there’s not much more to say about the Minnesota Lynx. If you’re reading this, you probably watched them play last year, and the year before, and the year before that – you’ve seen how overwhelming they can be. Their top seven players from last year’s charge to another championship all return, and they’ll be looking to do it all over again.

Home opener will be on TV if you can't make it to Target Center ..... if you get FSN Plus so check your local listings. Tip time is 4:00pm, 3:30 banner & ring ceremony.

Nice win for the Lynx game one. Maya may have to be the league MVP for the Lynx this year. 11-21 with three 3s and 9-11 from FT line makes for some effective eFG/True shooting percent. Augustus just doing what she does.

So far a horrible day for hoops. Lynx getting beat badly in the first half and Heat barring a miracle a certain loss.

Getting worse in the second half. The refs have been allowing the Sun to mug us today but still we are just getting crushed. One of the worst Lynx performances of the last four years so far. Come on Lynx lets see a comeback worthy of a champion.

Lynx fall behind by 16 but then come back with 7 in a row by Maya now within 6 late third Qtr. Still going to be tough but we have hope.

We came back to take the lead but then made some stupid plays and looks like we will lose. Down four with a minute to go Sun ball. Rookie 1st overall Chiney Ogwumike looks like the goods. She was superb on both offense and defense. Could be triple teamed in the post and still scored on multiple occasions.

Lynx ball down 2 9.8 seconds to go. Maybe a three to win or a two to take it to OT. Would be a Houdini like escape if we can pull out the win.

Lynx tie the game. Augustus totally guarded gets a tying two with 2.3 to go. Game going to OT. I knew my reverse psychology would work. Seems like nobody else watching the game but me so I am giving a little play by play.

Lynx get two real tough calls against them in OT. First Dantas with a nice O rebound and put back but called for over the back. Thought it was bogus then Ogwumike throws our player out of the way on the way to a lay up and the foul is called on us. We are down five now three with three to go. Whalen on a drive that should have been an and one.

Tan White looking like a real good addition to the team. Whalen with the drive and the foul. Hightower fouls out and Whalen has chance to put us up three. Gets both. 38 seconds to go Whalen with eight in OT.

Lynx with sloppy but big win. Whalen was MIA in regulation and made a TO in the last seconds of Regulation that could have cost the game but then owns the OT with I think 10 points.

It is True. The Lynx are winners. They played one of their worst games in years fell behind by 16 in regulation and 5 in OT but found a way to come back. No other team in town would have won a game like this.

Minnesota Lynx off to a hot start behind dominant play of Maya Moore
By Nate Parham  @NateP_SBN on May 19 2014, 4:00

The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Connecticut Sun 90-87 in overtime on Sunday afternoon to begin their title defense with a 2-0 record.

And as though they needed more talent, one of the most promising developments moving forward is the ease with which Brazilian rookie Damiris Dantas has adjusted to the league, as noted by Eric over at SB Nation's Minnesota Timberwolves site Canis Hoopus.

quote:

The Lynx tightened up their defense in the 2nd half, and tied the game at the end of regulation on a Seimone Augustus basket. Lindsay Whalen, who struggled all game, took over in the extra period and got the Lynx their second win of the season.

Coach Cheryl Reeve singled out rookie Damiris Dantas for praise for her screening and passing, as the Brazilian power forward made all four of her shots (7-7 on the year) and snagged nine rebounds as well. Maya Moore went for 33 and 12, and is looking, as mr. eggplant noted yesterday, like a rich man's Paul Pierce.

Ample credit to the relatively young Sun lineup for taking advantage of a poor first half for the Lynx offensively after their ring ceremony to get up by as many as 16 points with four minutes left in the third quarter. But the game was, once again, a testament to the immense talent of the Lynx - even when missing three players from last year's rotation due to injury - and their ability to find ways to turn the tide when nothing is actually going their way.

Defense was certainly part of the story with the Lynx holding the Sun to just 35.3% shooting in the second half - despite an impressive display by rookie Chiney Ogwumike, who finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks - as well as forcing 11 turnovers for 18 points. But it's also hard to ignore the role of Maya Moore.

Moore is averaging 33.5 points and 10.5 rebounds through two games and though you might want to point to sample size before getting too excited, the fact that she's getting those points in so many different ways - drives to the basket, threes, free throws - is most impressive. Consider that one of the knocks on Moore coming into the league was that she didn't drive or get to the line as much as she probably should have in college, the fact that she's scoring so many points without really getting her mid-range game going (she's only hit four mid-range jumpers this season, according to the charts at NBA.com/stats) is frightening: Moore could get even better than she has been as the season goes on.

It's way too early to discuss MVP candidates, in my opinion, but Juan Martinez of Kicks on Fire used the occasion of Moore's hot start and new shoes to make the case that she's among the biggest basketball stars in the world, male or female right now.

quote:

Nearly two years ago, we named Maya Moore one of the greatest athletes in Jordan Brand's history because of her already legendary accomplishments in such a short span of time. Since then, Moore has won another WNBA championship and two Chinese Basketball Association championships to add to the resume. So yeah, when people ask if Moore is deserving of an Air Jordan 11 player exclusive celebrating her accomplishment, there should be no doubt what the answer is. And when the time comes to redo that list of Jordan Brand athletes, it's safe to say Moore will be cracking the top 10 and surpassing a few of your favorites (*cough* ‘Melo *cough* CP3 *cough*) in the process.

To Martinez's point, when Moore became the first female athlete to grab a Jordan contract two years ago, there was some discussion about whether she was more deserving than even some of her contemporaries like Candace Parker or tennis star Serena Williams. Maybe others get more mainstream attention for one reason or another, but Moore is making an early case as a candidate for the league's best player right now.

5. The Lynx could be more dangerous at full strength

But back to the top of the hierarchy - if we define the top as the team that has been to the WNBA Finals three consecutive times and is still on Dynasty Watch - the Lynx have started the season winning without the players who played the fourth, fifth, and seventh most minutes on the team last season (Rebekkah Brunson, Monica Wright, and Devereaux Peters, respectively). Dantas is filling in admirably in the post, 2013 first round pick Lindsey Moore has been better - though not great - as a reserve point guard, and Maya Moore looks to be in permanent #beastmode.

It's still early - and L.A. and Phoenix are both better teams this season - but Minnesota could be even deeper and more talented than either of their championship teams was by the end of this season once everybody returns to full health. And that could be frightening.

Good news:

Monica Wright and Devereaux Peters both took part in basketball activities Thursday in practice. Neither will travel with the team on this road trip that also includes a game in Chicago on Monday. Janel McCarville, who injured her ankle in the Lynx win over the Connecticut Sun, was able to participate fully in practice yesterday and should be ready to go tonight.
