I went to a historically black college that is built on a former plantation. I've been exposed to shit you never would believe existed. My great grandmother's parents were slaves and I've heard stories. Dont ever ****in talk to me about not being there, EVER.

YOU weren't there and have no earthly ****ing clue about the bullshit coming out of your mouth and how absolutely insulting you're being to me, my family, heritage and anyone else if color (if not humans in general). Do everybody a favor and shut your mouth.

Ian I get that it is all personal to you. For what it's worth I'm Native American, Caucasian and Asian so I do have perspective as a person of color. I'm married to a Filipina. So I won't talk about people not knowing better anymore. I just have one question for you.

Was in France during the writing of the Constitution. Knew slavery was immoral. Was a weak human and acted in his self interest.

The abolitionist movement was already afoot. Transatlantic slavery was banned a short while later.

Ignorance is never a defense.

Ignorance is a better defense than knowing and still doing the wrong thing. However, I still admire Jefferson for all the good things he did. It's always easy to judge others.

Unless I read him wrong he even called the founding fathers cocksuckers here is the quote "These slave owner cocksuckers KNEW that shit was wrong." However, those guys also did some amazingly good things. It isn't as simple as just saying they owned slaves so I have to hate them.
Should we judge people from 240 plus years ago by our modern standards? Women were also treated as property back in those times. However, the words "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal." were very good words. They were actually radical words as the idea that a pauper was created equal to a king was blasphemy to some. Even if they didn't include women and Black men at the time. Eventually most of us came to believe that all men and women of any pigment are created equal. The founding fathers got part of the picture and eventually most of us got a lot more of the picture.

No not at all. I'm committing no crimes. I believe Kaepernick is quite misguided in his form of protest. I'm willing to stand up against his stand which makes me unpopular with many. I'm not going to just sit back
while many have a Kaepernick love fest now that he is getting paid millions for making commercials.

Nope I was a pretty big fan of MLK Jr, but it was mostly after his death. I was too young to know much of anything about him when he was alive. After reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X I had issues with, Elijah Muhammad, Louis Farrakhan and Malcolm X until he realized how exploited he had been. Do you for some reason think that a person who doesn't appreciate Kaepernick has to be against MLK Jr. ?

AWESOME

I don't think one's politics should distinguish who likes the ad or not. It is, at its core, a message to follow your dreams and don't be afraid to make your dreams HUGE. If someone finds that offensive and political I would say that they are watching with a prejudicial bias. The ad takes no political stance. The ad is a massive encouragement to all of us: men, women, handicapped, poor, disadvantaged, discouraged, hesitant, curious, talented, brave, frightened, human ... to think big and freaking go for it, whatever your dream.

Anyone who sees something offensive in that message was looking to find something offensive.

We're complex, interesting, sometimes disturbing people filled with flaws and talents. We are influenced by things very early in life but also, when exposed to different views later sometimes evolve our views and our behaviors. There are some that never really evolve and simply perpetuate the biases of our parents and their parents, but the more we expose ourselves to things outside of our sphere the more interesting WE become.

It is entirely possible to admire the way our forefathers crafted a new nation and embraced freedoms and liberty and self-reliance and all of the democratic (small d) institutions we as a nation treasure - AND for us to also cringe at and criticize their human failings. Someone can be both a high thinking idealist AND a brute in their own home.

It is a truth that some of our leaders in our history have led lives in which they hurt other people, but at the same time, wrote great legislation. Just like we can't rationalize that someone said something hurtful when they were drunk and blame it on the booze, we can't blame a man like Thomas Jefferson's ownership of slaves on the "but everyone was doing it" excuse.

Thomas Jefferson was both brilliant and wretched. He was both forward thinking and stubbornly wedded to the economic and social disgrace of slavery. And he was brilliant. The damage he was doing to the people he enslaved was not lost on him. He understood that the privileges he had as a white, wealthy landowner were a far cry from the lives his slaves led, yet his weakness was that he couldn't disengage himself from that perpetuated horror.

Who do you know that is a super smart guy but still does really stupid things sometimes? Have you ever met anyone with high academic prowess but not a lick of common sense? Have you ever known anyone that volunteers long hours to help others but also displays road rage because of an imagined insult from another driver?

Humans are complex and horrifically flawed. But we are also fascinating and talented and innovative and kind and forever dreamers.

That's MY answer to your question about the forefathers, and, interestingly, it is also the reason why the Nike ad is brilliantly done.

I think it was very brave for Nike to pick Kaep

A little surprised Nike didn't insist Kaep to get a hair cut. I think Kaep would resonate better if he were in a suit and tie and lose the mop hair.
