Staal will be the Wild's all-star for the 2nd time in 3 years. A little blurb from the Athletic: It was Friday and a game day in fact, so Eric Staal was getting a coffee in the middle of the afternoon before hopping on the team bus in Denver. That’s when he got a text from Wild general manager Bill Guerin asking for the team’s No. 1 center to give him a quick call when he had a chance. Uh-oh, Staal thought. “It caught me a little bit off guard,” Staal said, grinning. No, no, no, Staal wasn’t traded, which always is the first thought that goes through any player’s mind when their GM texts or calls. Instead, Guerin was informing Staal of the most recent good news in Staal’s tremendously good hockey career: At 35 years of age, Staal had been selected to play in his sixth All-Star Game and second with the Wild in the past three years. “This is the best league in the world and if you can be named to a game like that, it’s special and it’s an honor,” Staal said a few hours before the announcement Monday. “I’m obviously thankful for the guys that you’re playing alongside nightly. It’s just a representation of our guys and this group. It’ll be fun.”
