ORIGINAL: Pager Williams is an upgrade over Reiff, but not even to warrant a high cost, imo. There's also the impact on the cap - would Washington even want Reiff? Williams is probably not in game shape either, there's also the chemistry of the line to consider - which has been improving week to week. How much would it disrupt it to change it now? At the beginning of the season - if there was a way to include Reiff - I would have been for it. Now not so much. i agree, we need cap relief, not another major contract extension - plus williams hasn't been to training camp or played football in 10 months...move o'neill to lt and draft a rt in the 2nd round.... I think it's a mistake to just assume that O'Neill can just slide over to the left side. The time to look into that possibility was during OTAs, not during the season. It's easy to assume that O'Neill would be an upgrade to Reiff, given that he has given 1 sack in his career and is much more athletic than Reiff, but there are other things to consider before you can make a move like that. 1. Reiff faces a better pass rusher every week than O'Neil. Even if he is as good or better than Reiff, O'Neil may be better on the right side. Getting into a pass block is different footwork depending which tackle you play. RT may just prove to be more natural to O'Neil. Overall, I would not be surprised if O'Neill ultimately proved to be a better LT than Reiff, but it may not necessarily be the best thing for the line. Like I said, the time to look into it is OTA's. I'm pretty sure he was talking about doing it in the offseason since it was in addition to drafting a RT in R2. My worry is that people who watched O'Neill in college seem to think he was much better on the right side the the left. It's entirely possible with enough work/coaching he can be as good on the left side as he is on the right, but a lot of people seem to assume it's a sure thing. My memory, though faulty, was that in the Senior Bowl he held up much better on the left in reps and got crushed on the right. I also thought he played better on the left in college but feel much less confident on my memory on that. I don't think it's true that a LT sees better rushers. That's really evolved over time. You've had Miller and others change that. A lot of teams are moving DEs based on matchups. I think this will be a similar situation as Lane Johnson. We might decide ONeil is better on the left. I do think Collins (if he ever gets healthy) and Udoh give us more options on the right side If Oneil's growth allows the switch - I think we'll be a better team for it. ONeil has surprised all of us. He was supposed to be a redshirt guy.
