Most surprising thing yesterday?

Payton being a gracious loser at the podium afterwards. Actually said the Vikings deserved to win, and no complaining about the final play.

In the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, Cousins and the Vikings made the trip to one of the loudest stadiums in pro football, where most pundits expected them to lose by double digits, where oddsmakers had made them eight-point underdogs. Minnesota had taken a 10-point lead, lost it and gone to overtime. And they had triumphed, 26-20, against a Saints team that won 13 games this season, against a hostile crowd, against Drew Brees and Sean Payton, and against the prevailing sentiment that this is exactly the kind of game that Cousins typically would lose. Only here, Cousins did not lose, and the Vikings did not win in spite of him. They won because of him.

I had missed this yesterday. The Vikings got creative seeing the Saints guards much inferior to their tackles. It makes me wonder how they will prepare for the Niners.

#Vikings d-line coach Andre Patterson, via the VEN:

"We were trying to find a way to get [Everson Griffen & Danielle Hunter] on their guards. It changed Brees' demeanor in the course of the game. He likes to step up but seeing 97 & 99 inside made him stay high & that helped us."

The Vikings paid Kirk Cousins to come through in crunch time, and he did it

This may be the story everyone discussing this week, but it’s significant. The Vikings have gotten solid quarterback play during Mike Zimmer’s time as head coach, from Teddy Bridgewater to Sam Bradford to a career year from Case Keenum. All three quarterbacks played the game manager role well in Minnesota, ranking in the top 10 in avoiding turnover-worthy throws in each season from 2014 to 2017. However, the Vikings signed Cousins in order to take the next step offensively, and this was a game where they needed Cousins’ ability to attack down the field. He played a clean game overall, but his overtime 43-yarder to Adam Thielen put Minnesota in position to win the game, and it was the kind of play the Vikings envisioned when signing Cousins to his three-year contract in 2018.

Ummmmm.
Please don't "mix" in anything that consistently loses 8 yards.
Dumbest thing you can do.
Plow inside and lose 1.
The clock still runs, and you haven't put yourself into a 2nd and 18.

Scouting/coaching
Excellent.
High grades yesterday
Brees was uncomfortable early. And it stayed that way.

Refreshing

Sean Payton didn't take the bait on the lack of replay of a potential offensive pass interference on the final play of the New Orleans Saints' 26-20 overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.
After the game, Payton dismissed a question about whether he thought OPI should have been called on Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph for pushing off on the game-winning score.
Rather than complain about the call, Payton noted his team was outplayed by the Vikings.
"Obviously a difficult loss. I felt, really, at the end of the day they made a few more plays, enough more plays than we did," Payton said. "Took us a while offensively to get going. I think they did a handful of things to kind of hinder us in the running game. We finally gained a little more momentum in the second half. I thought defensively we held up. Tip your hats to Minnesota. They deserve to win. It's always difficult when it happens in the playoffs. You know there's no follow-up game. You go from there."

I wish this was standard for Payton, because dude really is a hell of a coach. He doesn't need all the extraneous bullshit.

Unless we go on a magical run 2020 is SB or bust for this team. I expect all the major parts to be here through Cousins contract.

I wouldn't draft a qb in the 1st 3 rounds. Either Cousins rises to the occasion and earns a new contract or a new regime will be put in place and we can let them find our next qb.

So Kirk Cousins at 33 years old is magically going to get it?
I think we know who he is. Everything about him screams average QB. He’ll whip up on bad teams but struggle vs good ones under pressure. How many times we need to see it
He suckered our front office into a big contract off the “but I played for bad teams”
I’d rather go after a Tua. This draft class is loaded at QB. Would be foolish not to go get one

I see you've been a no show, wow what a surprise. You and Rags must be stuck in a cave somewhere.

Great team win yesterday. Only got to see the OT in the Detroit airport. As a Viking fan already had that feeling that this one was gonna slip away. The feeling was just unreal. Time to move on to SF. Checked the weather, morning rain, but sunny in the PM, 54 degrees. Good football weather.

+1

Rag was trying to tab this a Minneapolis Miracle....no it was not. Cousins made 5 great throws I posted earlier about and beat a 13-3 team on the road in the playoffs. We outplayed the Saints after Thilelen's fumble.

We did paid Cousins a ton to do this and next week is another week but a Minneapolis Miracle it was not. It could be called a Breakthrough (Primetime) game for him even though I thought the Dallas game on Sunday night should be considered that.

I called for a "Minneapolis Miracle" type FINISH like late in fourth quarter assuming that the Saints would rally... Far before the game went to overtime... I did not cal;l it that after the fact, see game day posts..

Am I outspoken on my feelings on certain aspects of the team, absolutely, as we all are, and should be, we are die hard fans... At the end of the game day thread several very adimately told me to shut the f u c k up, and thats cool, its their right to voice their opinions... So I have just been rather quiet as asked...

Make no mistake Im right now searching for the right tix to buy to see my team play the Niners next weekend...

Foremost to me is seeing the team win, sure I have voiced very strong and maybe wrong or biased views of given aspects of the team, Im not caring about anything in end but positive outcome for the Vikings...

You weren't the only one that was unsure about Kirk....but when you reposted the Minnesota Miracle post (when it wasn't) and the Shanahan OC you rubbed some rhubbard the wrong way I guess No biggie we won!

You have strong opinions so it will happen Rag. I get told to STFU too at times....just not as direct.

I was worried that my fiance was going to have to burn her Thielen jersey after the 1st Quarter but now she can wear it.

I would love to see us beat SF....me jealous. I hope we bring the same game to SF.

It was a very Viking like game, The Theilen fumble to start, Kirk was stiff early on, the throws into the turf, batted pass, what looked like a WTF Cook fumble that we as Vikes fans know well as a gut punch in the biggest games...

Not admitting crow on Kirk, he got his head right while Cook was doing the heavy lifting early on in game and yes, Kirk made the plays when it mattered to see our outcome end with a W.

Coupled with a showing by the defense when we most needed them to FINALLY show up this year, and a coaching/ game plan that could have been more agressive, but did come to play when it most mattered.

We need more of same next weekend against an opponent thats coaching staff knows Kirk very well. It will be imparative that we have another solid showing on D as well and allow our play makers to play to their strengths.

Im a Vikes fan through and through! Hoping Kirk starts next weeks game where he left off in overtime in New Orleans and we just roll over a Niners team that does have flaws and can be beat when put on ropes quickly...

49ers are going to be a real test.

#2 offense in points, #4 in yards.
#8 defense in points, #2 in yards.

By comparison, the Saints:
#3 offense in points, #9 in yards.
#13 defense in points, #11 in yards.

I'd quit calling the pass to Hollins a drop. The D back made a great play and had his hand in there between Hollins hands. He was there a tad early even so could have been PI if being picky but I can't blame Hollins for a drop, it was great D.

Hollins had seperation but the ball was underthrown which allowed the db to get his hand in there

Seen what ??

So you agree we have seen over and over and over that Kirk is Jekyl and Hyde type player? He can be so hot and cold, even in same game... He can take take you on a magical run one minute and then go into some shell and make you say WTF the next...

BiPolar QB play, perfect for a Vikings team that has been just that for so many years for us fans!

Enjoy the run, I will take bipolar Kirk if he does it to a Super Bowl win!
