There are plenty of good players that will get drafted tomorrow. We have the ammo to move all over the place to get some very solid players, let's let it play out, it could be a very fun day tomorrow!

We said that about today too.

and we got 2 pretty good ones. I get having problems with it. But honestly the odds of getting one better player out of those four picks than we would have with the one are very good.

And at some point you increase the odds of wasted pick(s) as not all of them will make the team. We are now talking about more draft picks on day 3 than most have during the entire draft.

It doesn't really matter if a bunch don't make the team.
The key is finding a player on 3rd day that is more that just a guy.
If you find a Diggs or Thielen or Everson Griffin than the shotgun approach on the 3rd day is worth it.

I love trade downs. But the fact remains = It is harder to do it in the 7th than it is in the 6th than it is in the 5th and so on. There is a balance between quantity and quality.

Thielen was an UDFA. So I guess the real play is not to draft anyone and sign 180 UDFA.

Plus we'll likely have no OTAs and less development opps this year. I would guess the hit rate is lower this year vs previous years as a result.

That is a great point.

Get the nasty injury prone Guard(Muti). Then grab 2 other guards(Bartch, Biadasz). Odds are one will work out.

The weird thing is, no other team approaches the draft like RS. He loves to trade down for more picks at the expense of getting higher quality players. Just, because. If Belichick used the same approach, or Reid, or Tomlin or any other current Super Bowl winning team then it would be excusable. But literally no winning organization approaches the draft this way.

Thielen was an UDFA. So I guess the real play is not to draft anyone and sign 180 UDFA.

Plus we'll likely have no OTAs and less development opps this year. I would guess the hit rate is lower this year vs previous years as a result.

And if you can guarantee your trade-ups will always be Cook than you would always trade up.

If we missed on a Hunter by trading down it was not worth it.

Excellent point. Plus, so much of the quantity argument relies on coaching up those positions. It's been pretty hit or miss when it comes to that, especially w/ O-line, LBer's, and QB's.

Last year's Third Day is looking pretty good. Samia, Smith, Udoh, Boyd, Bisi, our prized Long Snapper and KG's favorite Mitchell.

Cmon Rick you can break some records!!!

I had to crunch the numbers. The NFL went to 7 rounds in 1993, so we'll go from there. Yes the 16 picks would be a record.

The 1997 Dolphins and 2016 Browns had a record 14 picks each. The Vikings record was 12 last year. So basically 28 picks in 2 years. That's 4 years worth of picks. Yikes. In 2017 we had 11. Rick had a down year in 2018 at only 8. Since 2011 we had 10 or more picks 6 times out of the 9 years and averaged 10. The fewest was 8.

The most picks rounds 4-7 was 10, set by 5 teams, last by the 2018 Rams. Vikings 13 this year

The most picks rounds 5-7 was 8, set by 5 teams, last pulled off by the 2019 Vikings. Vikings 10 this year

The most picks rounds 6-7 was 7, set by the 2019 Vikings. Vikings 7 this year

The most picks in the 7th round was 5, set by 4 teams, last by 2014 Cowboys. Vikings had 4 last year. Vikings 4 this year

Not sure if you all have been entertained by my Packer fan copy and pastes. This is my favorite:

Honestly
If we let the dailynorsemen vote and choose our picks so far would they have actually been worse than what we got?

I ran a sim of the rest of the draft. This is what I got without even trying. I did one trade to get the first pick of the day

MIN 107.
Curtis Weaver
DE Boise State
trade icon
MIN 130.
Tyler Biadasz
C Wisconsin
MIN 132.
Kenny Robinson
S XFL (West Virginia)
MIN 176.
K'Von Wallace
S Clemson
MIN 201.
Reggie Robinson
CB Tulsa
MIN 203.
Quez Watkins
WR Southern Miss
MIN 205.
Saahdiq Charles
OT LSU
MIN 219.
Geno Stone
S Iowa
MIN 244.
Carter Coughlin
OLB Minnesota
MIN 249.
JaMycal Hasty
RB Baylor
MIN 253.
Derrek Tuszka
DE North Dakota State

Would that be a good result? I think this is a reasonably accurate portrayal of what we could come out of the rest of the draft with by only making one trade.

best available players left per Sports Illustrated
https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/04/25/best-prospects-still-available-day-3-2020-nfl-draft

Vikings needs. Guard, DT, DE, S, WR, Once these are covered if we don't do any more trades it should simply be BPA the rest of the way.
#1 Curtis Weaver Edge Boise State. We can have a class reunion for Mattison, and Cleveland and meet a big need with the highest rated player on the board.
#2 Amik Robertson CB Louisiana Tech if we are looking at Dantzler as a safety
#4 Eason QB Washington We have so many picks. Why not use one to upgrade the backup QB
10 Tyler Biadasz IOL Wisconsin Highest rated G/C
11. Donovan Peoples-Jones, WR, Michigan
15. James Lynch, IDL, Baylor
17. Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota
19. Netane Muti, IOL, Fresno State
21. Khalid Kareem, EDGE, Notre Dame
28. Ben Bartch, OT, St. John's (MN) Rated Much higher on other boards and considered a guard prospect as well
30. John Simpson, IOL, Clemson Rated Much higher on other boards Might be my personal favorite for first pick day three
36. K'Von Wallace, S, Clemson

For those who wish we had traded up I think we are very lucky we didn't.
Vikings tried to move up for Jefferson. It would have probably cost us pick 58 or 89 to do it and we got him anyway.
Next player we most likely would have traded up for Ezra Cleveland Got him anyway.
Next Player Maybe Jordan Elliott would have cost us 89 Dantzler and 105 which we ended up trading down for 4 picks

Would any of those have been a good move?

The second two are red herrings. No evidence suggests we tried to trade up for Ezra. The player we tried to trade up for was Gillimore. And no one will be able to answer whether it was a good move for 2-3 years. But right now, I would rather have Gillimore and a trade up for Dantzler and "only" have 6 draft picks on day 3.

I don't know if I believe the report. Williams desperately wants out of Washington. Would he try to block his best chance. All reports are he has a good relationship with Cousins.

I don't know if I believe the report. Williams desperately wants out of Washington. Would he try to block his best chance. All reports are he has a good relationship with Cousins.

Maybe he looked at our cap situation and realized he couldn't get as much as if he went somewhere else.

But right now, I would rather have Gillimore and a trade up for Dantzler and "only" have 9 draft picks on day 3.

I'm totally guessing, but If we were going to trade up in the second I think Cleveland is the most likely player we would have targeted. Gallimore and Elliott were the two best DTs according to most. We almost certainly could have traded up for Elliott with 89 and 105. Gallimore may have cost more. We most likely did not have the draft capital to trade up for either and still get Dantzler.
