Udoh is the new Sloter

Except Udoh took on Mack and shut him down.

I have no idea if that translates to him being even a productive backup. But I sure as hell know what we've been running out there and what we've got at this moment. Just like Sloter>>>>>Mannion.

Also noteworthy is how well Udoh played guard in Senior Bowl practice and game. And:
https://relativeathleticscores.com/2020/01/13/olisaemeka-udoh-ras/

I couldn't even find Doziers or Mason Cole's RAS scores.

I remember arguing with you in the draft thread last year when we passed on all the Gs in the 3rd-4th rd. because you said we had Samia and Udoh who 'held their own' against Mack and the Bears. And nobody at that point in the draft were going to beat them out.

Now its Udoh 'shut Mack down' (2 years ago) ... ... you mean the Mack with neck and back issues in the last useless game of a disappointing season (for the Bears)?

Samia also played well against the Bears that year ... not much of an indicator.

O'Neal is our only solid starter right now. Hill is a decent back-up. Cleveland may improve and Bradbury may vastly improve but, as of today, our OL situation is worse off than last year (without Reiff); and the IOL is still 'barren'.

I wouldn't necessarily count on Udoh for much...

However, I think it's unfair to lump him in with Samia.

The bears game Samia showed you exactly what you saw during his starting stint.... he'd be ok one play and then fall down lurching on the next.

Udoh was pretty consistent and pretty solid.

However, it was last game of the season... nothing to play for... etc...

I'd say Udoh=Aviante Collins in the fact that he couldn't get on the field last year... but this coaching staff has a history of sketchy judgement on who should be starting.

I agree overall but again, too much is put on that Chi game. It was preseason like. We have yet find out what we have with Udoh. Which makes him popular given our shabby OL.

Guessing Udoh is already penciled in as a starter for this season. or at least, that is about the only explainantion for our lack of activity in bringing in a starting caliber oline player(s).

We know Cole is a starter because around here $2.2 million/year is a big-time OL salary.

What will really suck is when Spielman talks about how he upgraded the OL... signed free agents from other teams, resigning our own free agents, how he was so incredible maneuvering in the draft to get the players they wanted, blah, blah, joe bag o donuts and joe six pack have a world of potential, slobber, spit, vomit.

And then we will draft a guy who has played offensive tackle his entire career in the 3rd round and promptly move him to guard because our talent evaluators are so much smarter than everybody else.

Since the draft is teeming with 6' 7" top heavy guys whose colleges would not dare to let them play guard, our problems at guard are solved!

"We love their footwork. As you know, we picked Brian O'Neill who is a perennial All-Pro. Computer feet. We thought, hey why not get a bunch of light in the pants types and build the entire line out of them. Perfect for our vaunted zone blocking scheme. Which, when you really dissect it, is about how quickly you can get off the turf and get back to the huddle. You know, get bull rushed, reverse pancaked, shake it off. Short memory guys, yeah we love them."

Are you sure that was me? I read the last 20 pages of the 2020 draft thread. We had an exchange on WAR, but not much else. You and KGB had some back and forths about IOL.

Here's my post giving a grade and summary - around page 140: Overall I give the Vikes a B+. Got some guys that can contribute right away at WR, CB, Big Nickel, and perhaps T/OG in Ezra. Intriguing players like Wonnum, Dye, Hinton. And depth at S. Not enough done in trenches. I wanted a legit DT like Gillimore and a IOL who could compete this year. Would have liked another WR that could do something different like stretch the field. Bullets in 2021. Dennison and Peterson have a lot of work to do.

I was 100% wrong on Kubiak - I did express faith in him from his time in Denver. His talent eval and play calling ability.

Just kidding dude. I appreciate that you tried to clarify it.

Maybe it was KG (always one of 'the usual suspects') but someone was investing a lot of faith in Samia Udoh ... as the Guard well started drying up in the 4th rd.

All good - there's good reason for you to have thought it. I do bring up Udoh just to get a reaction from the thread. But more than that, I have advocated for Samia, Udoh, Collins to get a look. Im pretty sure in Training camp last year. Not because I believe they are All Pros, but because I would rather see an unknown quantity with potential than go with known garbage (Dozier, Elf). More likely than not, I'm going to be wrong [case in point with Samia] but it shouldn't take an act of Congress to recognize and act on subpar performance.

But I have never not advocated for additional attempts to upgrade the oline, WR, Dline or QB for that matter. Some take it as strong advocacy for those players, but that's not my intent. More recognition of where the team is and where it needs to be to win a SuperBowl imo.

That's the Bills counting money in front of the poor.

Meanwhile, Spielman is full-into his draft process: sitting at a table with a pea and three pods ... furiously shuffling them around ... daring Zimmer or anybody else walking by to choose one ... at the cost of a make-believe 7th rounder if they miss.

If we're saving cap money for Brown we can sit tight.

If not why not attempt to sign Lane Taylor. I know he has an injury history but something needs to be done regarding LG. Cole ans Dozier in a camp battle is complete utter joke.

I don’t see a way the Vikings wind up with any compensatory picks in 2022. Harris and Wilson are more than cancelled out by Tomlinson and Peterson. Cuts and non-tendered RFAs don’t count for those purposes.

The 'official' signing of LB Vigil today was probably our last chew toy until after the draft.

Unless there's still somebody out there more confounding than Dozier. Mannion?

I think the Patriots are masters at this. Do not bring in guys the same years that you let guys go. It's obviously not always the best route considering needs for the next season, but on balance if you can get an extra 3rd round pick or 2 every couple years, that's an edge.

Question: Do you think that free agency or the draft will be more impactful this year for the Vikings?

My first reaction was to think free agency is more impactful, but then I thought that we can't count on Pierce as "this year", so that makes it less clear. Also we lost our best offensive lineman from last year in free agency. We have to factor lost players too. We saved money in the exchange at safety and third linebackers. I'm guessing that it's a wash performance wise. I could be wrong about that. Clearly we upgraded our defensive tackle position and cornerback position though. (so glad they did the latter now that Gladney will be out) Those are two outstanding starters and of course the Vikings are not done yet.

In the draft, it's hard to know right away if the players are going to be great or bad. I'd prefer to be optimistic though, and so I'm going to assume that the first pick will be an absolute stud for years to come. Beyond that it's a crap shoot and it's even likely that there will not be more than one player drafted later this month that will start for the team this season.

So I believe that this year, not last year, free agency will be more impactful for this season. Long term impact is just too hard to know, even after the draft. Last year with Jefferson and Datzler playing at such a high level and Pierce opting out it clearly tilted in favor of the draft.

It's been reported that Orlando Brown wants Trent Williams money...

I can't see the Vikes doing that but would be happy to be wrong.
He is young... but I think has only played LT 1 year and I don't think he is played at Williams level.

Question: Who would play at a higher level this year- Slater, Darrisaw or Brown?

Slater opted out this past year, so he might be rusty. He also lacks the ideal length for a tackle, but has really "good feet". Darrisaw is supposed to be a bit more raw and developing, but with the high upside. I don't know clearly what level Brown plays at. He's big and like a mountain to get around in the pass blocking and probably a force in the run blocking, but lacks the ideal athleticism that we like, especially in our system. Still, he would be an upgrade and be ready to contribute right away at a high level and the team can work with his combination of strengths and weaknesses.

I'm 'going to say that Brown would be better this year. Down the road I kind of like the rookies better and they would be cheaper with the rookie contract. The big advantage for the trade would be that the Vikings could fill two positions. I mean, if they trade first round picks, they could probably pick up a nice edge rusher later in round one and upgrade two positions instead of one with the draft pick. If the team wants to be "all in" for this year, than it does make sense to get the starter who is more ready at LT and the edge rusher too. That would be the argument to pull the trigger on the trade.

That would be the argument to pull the trigger on the trade.

i think that brown is going to be a pain in the ass....he only want to be a left tackle - if it's not working out well and we want to move cleveland to the far left and brown inside, what will orlando's reaction be?...he wants to play there because it pays the most...is brown a 'team' player?....

also, cleveland was drafted to play as a tackle; he's athletic and has a tackles body - give him shot....and, let's draft the best guards possible - two with our first four picks....

micah parsons or trade back....

I know some people are hoping for Trai Turner but it's more likely that IF & that's a big IF Rick signs anyone for OL it'll likely be James Carpenter. He's worked with Dennison in the past. Journeyman starter, 2011 1st rd pick. Slight upgrade= 56.1 pff, 3 sacks & 0 penalties
