ORIGINAL: twinsfan PA hoping the new GM isn't the one making the final call on who to draft if there's disagreement. WTF??? Old white man has a problem. PA had too much access to Spielman and Zimmer...Poor guy. our version of Hannity Hannity and Carlson wrapped in one. How unintentionally (or intentionally?) racist can a statement get? C'mon PA!! well … full-disclosure, I made a very similar statement a day or two go … if there’s a dispute in the draft room - is the analytics guy going to have to make a final call for the personnel guys he hired as his experts? I’m not seeing the racial side of that …. I guess I’m an anaytics racist when it comes to judging college football talent. Maybe the final decision is better off being cold and calculating instead of intuitive. Who knows. It will take a few drafts to build analytics on the new guy. This is my take on Analytics. You can't base everything on just the numbers. If you do, you will think Kirk Cousins is one of the best QBs in Football and the numbers bear that out. There is a feel to it. There is more than just the numbers. Analytics can only get you so far. You do have to read between the lines sometimes. I think there is a disconnect here between "stats" and "analytics". Stats (TDs, Comp%, QBR, etc) would say that Kirk is one of the best QBs in football. Analytics would look at the situations where he excels and where he struggles. Its a much deeper dive than what boxscores tell you. What type of plays or situations does he do well in, when and how does he struggle, stuff like that. Vastly more in depth yes but at some point, you are still diving off of meaningful data patterns and projecting human behavior ... that's true in business and moreso in sports. Extrapolating every conceivable variable going all the way back to CBs in the primordial soup. At some point its a gut call. Obviously great in theory. Time will tell if it actually makes a difference. Could analytics have helped us avoid someone like Bradbury and instead opt for Elgton Jenkins? Gladney vs. Winfield Jr? Mond vs. Mills? So many recent misses.
