I've enjoyed this period of the " legal tampering". For whatever reason I never really cared too much about all the ins & outs of the salary cap. The basics of each team has X amount of salary cap dollars to spend a year and there are creative ways to pay it off but eventually it all had to be paid off was enough for me. This year I took a different interest and it was fun. Thank you!

I don't get bringing back Bradbury. Why?

He just flat out isn't any good. I'm flat out sick of watching this crap IOL get abused over and over again.

Our IOL could not block the NYG DL in the WC game. Can you imagine what Philly's dline would have done to them?

Until this franchise seriously addresses the trenches we will be pretenders.

I don’t like it, either. But, hopefully they draft someone like a Schmitz or Avila to take over when they are ready. Our biggest weaknesses are at IOL and IDL. It doesn’t take a football expert to figure that out.

Oh, 4 of the 5 signed FA centers signed with the team they were with in 2022.

Sadly, the regime just finalized the OL so the point is moot.

The biggest hole on this team is by far CB.

You’re right, Tom. I think they will draft the best corner available at 23. I think a better play is to build up the offensive and defensive lines and worry about the skill positions next year. But, that’s just me.

Thought they would replace Bradbury. Oh well, now it's time to hope. Hope Darrisaw will not get a single concussion. That Ingram improves. That O'Neill's achilles will be fine. Cleveland, eh, he's plateaued.

Barring a trade down with a division rival, pencil in CB at #23.

They signed Tonga and Davenport. Guess they tried to keep Tomlinson. Phillips is starting regardless. Considering the cap, not sure what could have been done. DL has been $$$.

I hope they go after a G. Stuck w/ Bradbury so C is a moot point. Oliver might be our best blocker!

And this...

The Minnesota Vikings and All-Pro long-snapper Andrew DePaola have reached agreement on a three-year, $4.025 million deal that includes $2.265 million guaranteed, his agent told ESPN. The deal is reportedly the largest guarantee given to a long-snapper in NFL history.

Followed closely by the DL. Tomlinson was our best guy and even he was only average. But w/o him in the lineup this defense really got trucked in the trenches.

Connor McGovern of the Jets will be the one to watch and see what he gets. I saw Ethan Pocic of the Browns got 3 years 18 million but maybe that's a hometown discount. I don't really know. I do know that Bradbury gets pushed back a lot and I don't really think that's something you can "learn" to overcome.

Conner McGovern went from Dallas to Buffalo.

Connor McGovern signed a 3 year, $22,350,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $8,000,000 signing bonus, $11,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $7,450,000. In 2023, McGovern will earn a base salary of $1,900,000, a signing bonus of $8,000,000 and a workout bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $4,000,000 and a dead cap value of $9,900,000.

Edit: There are two Conner McGoverns. Here he is listed as a center: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/connor-mcgovern-29126/ but it looks like he is a G. Your guy hasn't signed. I gotta take a break from all this!

Yeah. And Overthecap shows them both as centers (but one is a guard) and both are free agents.

Read there are also two Josh Allens and Lamar Jacksons.

Some players even play the same position with the exact same name. In the past, there were two wide receivers named Steve Smith and two running backs named Adrian Peterson.

Murphy (who recently turned 25-years-old) was drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Washington. Prior to his college days - where he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors - he played his high school football locally at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, AZ.
Murphy’s ability to play in either a boundary or slot role made him one of the more attractive free agents on the market along with his youth.
Last season, Murphy landed on injured reserve with a back injury that kept him out after Week 10. Despite battling health issues, Murphy showed he was very capable of hanging with some of the best receivers in the league as a CB1:

Davante Adams (2 rec, 11 yards, 1 TD)

Cooper Kupp (4 rec, 44 yards)

DJ Moore (6 rec, 50 yards)

AJ Brown (3 rec, 32 yards)

We're no longer forced to take a CB in the first. Nice.

So, it's possible next year at this time we could be keeping Cousins for the finally 12.5 in cap space? Is it probable?

jtbc, I'm not asking Dan ;/

So maybe you wait for your rookie QB next year if the real deal doesn't present itself this year

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. Void year money is gone forever and already paid to the player. Just like Tomlinson's $7.5 million counts this year even though he'll be playing for another team. Void years probably shouldn't even be allowed - they feel dirty. People are all "look Cousins isn't even in the top 10 for contracts anymore!". Well, yeah he sort of is. If you count everything he's $48 million this year. I sort of got away from my point - No, Cousins can't just stay a Viking in 2024 for the void year money.

I am serious, but not as a Cousins cheerleader, but as one who wants to understand what you just said. So correct me if I'm wrong. Play in '23 and there's 12.5 owed to the cap. Play out '24 and there's half of that left for '25?

With my first post I assumed the 12.5 would be due next year

We gave him a fake year(void year)2024.

This was to get some cap space for 2021 and 2022.

Now we pay the piper in 2024(12.5M in cap space) and he probably won't be on our team.

But if he is on the team, with nothing done to his contract, we pay 6.25 in '25?

If Kirk Cousins is still our quarterback in 2025, I'll be rooting for one of the other 31 teams in the league.

Is that a threat or a promise?

He'll still be trolling here though.

Byron Murphy missed the final eight games of last season with a back injury. Before that, he hadn't had any injury issues since breaking his foot in his second year at Washington in 2017.

Kwesi appears to be building a foundation now that allows the team to make a serious run in 2024. If his approach to FA continues, a version of the following seems very likely (thanks Spotrac):

2023
- In addition to existing cuts, get rid of Harrison Smith, Dalvin Cook, and Zadarius Smith.
- Extend Hunter ($19m year), Hockenson ($14m year), Jefferson ($32m year)

2024
- The team will be $106m under the cap.

Cousins will affect that number if he's around in 2024, and the team will sign a couple of FA's this year that will affect that number, but that's still a lot of money to spend on free agents in 2024 with little to no dead money on the books.

Cleaning up the books was going to take a couple years.

Me likey.

The hell we are in this year will not be our hell in the future.

It's 106M with only 26 guys signed. Have to count 51.

Still in good shape though.

A serious run in 2024?

106 minus dead cap, minus a QB, minus this year's acquisitions (like Bradbury), minus half a team not signed, and Darrisaw's contract looming.

WHY ARE PEOPLE MAKING CONCLUSIONS OF THE 2024 CAP STATUS WHEN WE JUST STARTED FREE AGENCY AND NEED TO GET UNDER THE CAP?

The $106 includes dead cap money. You can assume the team will keep Z Smith this year, and keep Dalvin into 2024, and keep Hunter on his existing deal, but the way Kwesi has approached FA so far doesn't indicate that those things will happen. The number changes with Cousins reworked contract, but that's likely the only substantial dead money on the books in 2024. Kwesi is cutting dead-weight bad contracts and signing guys to cheap contracts or one year prove it deals. Darrisaw's contract doesn't need to be addressed until 2025. Depending on how they structure JJ's, Hunter's, and Hockenson's deals, the team could have well over $106mil to work with in 2024.

By my math that means we can get another 15 blocking tight ends in free agency.

Pathetic post.

With the Murphy signing, does that make DL the area of greatest need ? ILBer ?

What about the Duke ?
